“Tasty Burgers in Cheerful (not cheap) Mayo Diner....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

We weren't quite sure what to expect going here : this was formerly a not so successful "Chinese" outlet on Chapel Street, Louisburgh, but now it was being promoted as an "American Style Diner" experiment by the reputable owners of "Hudsons' Pantry" around the corner in Long Street. What we found was a cafe/diner with basic decor, friendly service & a menu which majors on very tasty Burgers at prices which would do justice to "up-market" outlets in Dublin.

They say "location" is crucial for any outlet, and even in a small village/town like Louisburgh anywhere off the main street starts with a disadvantage - "Surf" is just off the main square, and there's a small car-park nearby. Despite the cheery external signage, let's admit the premises is not exactly attractive, but once you go inside the front-of-house greeting from Christie is more encouraging. Clearly the Owners have made some effort to brighten-up the themed interior - wall decorations like U.S. automobile plates (apparently on loan from a local Chelsea Football Club Fan !), road signs + a mural set the scene.

They don't take bookings, so it's hit and miss as regards getting in. Once you do, your choices revolve around Burgers & variations on that classic American theme. We settled for a so-called "Louisburger" + a fascinating "Texas Holdem" - a clever presentation of slow-cooked meat strips in a burger bun. Both were very tasty. One shouldn't expect much in the way of wine in a "Diner" and this was absolutely true here : you can have either a glass of Merlot or Chardonnay @ Euro 5 a go, and neither will win any award. If you've a "sweet tooth" your dessert options include that famous dish "Knickerbocker Glory", but this time around we restrained ourselves.

Our Bill of Euro 34 (before Tip) was about the same as we've paid for a similar serving in a far more comfortable "Burger Place" in Dublin, but we would commend the quality of what we ate & service was excellent. Eating choices in Louisburgh are extremely limited - this place is worth a try but don't expect too much !
