“Not bad for the price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2014

We went here at Feb half term so had booked a reasonably priced almost all-inclusive package through Brentaski staying at the Gran Baita. The hotel itself is large and very old-fashioned in a 60s/70s decor retro sort of way. However, it's clean and mostly comfortable (apart from hard pillows) and I doubt they would have the funds to renovate and remodel the interiors. There is a large bar area downstairs which was cosy for apres-ski. The rooms are a bit larger than the usual ski offering - the bathrooms functional if dated - included nasty clingy shower curtains!
Breakfast is always a bit of a disappointment in Italy and here there was a selection of some cereals - no hot options apart from cold hard boiled eggs and once we saw some rather limp scrambled egg. There was bread, ham and cheese, some croissants and Italian type dry sponge cake...no fresh fruit on offer. Evening meals were average quality. There was usually a choice of 3 options for each course - often a pasta starter which was nice. Mains included pork (we think) on 5 out of 7 nights. There was a traditional night when the staff and chef brought out a large roast pork joint which was served up with flair. We had to use the hotel's small shuttle bus each morning and evening to get up to the lift - in principle this is fine, but it was always busy and you will wait some time each morning waiting in line for your turn. Our teenage boys thought it was absolutely fine, but if we went back to the resort I expect we would want to stay somewhere nearer the lift to avoid the bus each day - but overall it was good value for money and we had an excellent ski holiday.

Cosy, dated, comfortable, clean accommodation. BUT, if you're vegetarian then forget it!! Main course one night - a sliced tomato & some mozzarella balls. Mid week, a suckling pig was brought out to much cheering & clapping & taking of photographs. We waited patiently while everyone else in the entire dining room was served. The owner then came over to us & said brusquely "what do you want, cheese or egg?" Well, we'd had cheese for starters so neither was a desirable option and couldn't be compared to the meat-eaters' plates of meat, mushrooms, roast potatoes and gravy. What was obvious was that we hadn't been considered at all, even with 10 months' notice of our stay from when we booked; when we were assured that being vegetarian wouldn't be an issue. We paid the same price but were left feeling disappointed & second rate.
Food in general was mostly bland, unexciting, cheap, repetitive, small portions, & strange flavours. We have eaten in many, many places around the world & rarely have we felt so disappointed and let-down.

Room Tip: some rooms have a balcony, some have no view at all. Some overlook the bins which are noisy.

What a strange place the Gran Baita is, a veritable contradiction of itself.

Accommodation clean and comfortable if dated (the bathrooms are interesting and colourful). Staff mostly helpful. Decor, a little odd (if you like 1970's meets brick a brac store). Prices are reasonable.

The food left a lot to be desired, although it was edible, it just wasn't very exciting and the portion sizes were out of control (starters bigger than mains). I suggest that we would have been happy with a bucket of pasta every night with a decent sauce rather than the attempt to do 3 courses badly.

The bar was understocked and they ran out of the basics half way through the week. No tonic water, no vodka, very little else except the local beer and some odd liquers.

The shuttle service to the gondola was erratic. It was very frustrating waiting for ages for a lift when all the other hotels seemed to be wizzing people backwards and forwards regularly. This again may be a reflection on the fact that this hotel is probably much cheaper than they were and they therefore had more buses.

So basically you get what you pay for.

Just returned from a weeks stay at he Gran baita a really pleasant place..a touch of faded glory ... a bit of a walk from the village centre..the rooms are comfortable and the prices very reasonable...The staff are very helpful and couldn't do enough for you..The food is ...ordinary and there is only paid for drinks at dinner ..but for the money I could complain...excellent value and I had a good time there

I have just got back from a fabulous week of skiing with my family over new year. We had a fantastic time at the Gran Baita and that was mostly due to the outstanding service and friendliness from the wonderful staff.

Enza the owner is the perfect host and together with her son Andrea made us feel like guests in their home. A big thank you also to Samuere, Henry, Flora and Maura and the rest of the staff. A special mention must go to Fausto the chef, who served up consistently high quality home cooked local food. Highlights of the holiday were the gala new year's dinner and the special dinner on our last night, when the the restaurant was turned into a magical grotto and Fausto brought out a whole roast suckling pig.

The hotel itself is not the most luxurious but is very cosy, with a nice friendly bar to relax in during the evenings. My mum summed up the whole experience perfectly saying that staying there was 'like coming home without having to do any chores'.
