We stayed at the Vecchia America for one week during the ski season of 2012 as a school group. Having organised 14 school ski trips in venues across Austria and Italy I have encountered several levels of hospitiality throughout my time. The Hotel Vecchia let us down on many levels unfortunately.

Firstly the food was below par, the first pasta main was hit or miss but the meat main was always a let down. To be fair the salad bar was varied and well prepared. The service was something I have never come across before. A troop of very inexperienced and aloof waitresses from a Leeds Hospitaility school led by a busy Italian head waiter who did not speak any English. Very unique set up.

The Manager spent the entire week patrolling the reception area with a scowl keeping a close eye on the activities of our 41 teenagers who never gave him at any point reason to be concerned. The areas available for the children to relax in were inadequate and the games room was redundant.

Bedrooms were very sparce and antiquated. The manager expected several of students to share a double bed until we insisted that this would not be appropriate.

Make sure, like us, that you do a breakage assessment on arrival at the hotel. We handed in on the first day the breakages that we had uncovered in all our rooms and had them signed by the manageress. On the last day, despite this, the manager decided he was going to charge us for damage to a room that we had pointed out within an hour of arriving. The manager did not speak English, although this is not a problem (2 of our group are fluent in Italian) he made no attempt to make us feel welcome throughout the week. Most of the time we felt in his way.

Folgarida is a great location for a ski trip. This was our second trip to the village having stayed at the Kapriol two years earlier. The Kapriol was excellent.

Be warned the food at this hotel and the Renzi is not what you would expect from Italy it was that bad, my son explained to me he would rather eat cold pizza from the night before for breakfast, we decided to eat out at the local restaurant every night rather than stay at the hotel. If like me you booked an all inclusive at this resort please note there is a four hour coach transfer from the airport to folgarida and the coach driver would not stop to use the toilet facility on the return journey home the toilet door on the coach was locked.

We have just returned from our sixth visit to this hotel. As ever, the manager, his family and staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Our room was comfortable, very clean, with plenty of hot water in the shower – important after a day’s skiing!

The location is excellent with a five minute walk to the gondola station - just long enough to be a good warm up, although a minibus service has been available for the last few years and there is a ski bus stop just outside. The food is good, with variety and choice at breakfast and dinner. The house wine is good and very reasonably priced – we didn’t venture further into the wine list but there were other options. There is a bar for coffee or a nightcap but no noisy entertainment, just a TV, which suits us; there is also a small lounge area.

We would recommend this hotel to people who want to relax in friendly and comfortable surroundings, without frills.

Myself, my partner and his extended family (including friends and one child) stayed here during January.

We were late arriving due to a delay at the airport so arrived tired and hungry. The manager and manageress took us straight to our rooms and allowed us to check in later on after we had settled in...perfect!
We booked 2 double rooms, one family room and a twin room.. when we got there we needed to change the family room which was done quickly and without hassle. The rooms were basic but incredibly clean. Good showers with loads of hot water (exactly what you need after a day of skiing!). We only had one pillow each but again when we asked for for another, the help was quick and without hassle.

Coming from a Mediteranean family who cook a lot at home, the food could have been a little better, but there was always enough of it and it was nicely varied throughout the week. There was also a good mix of vegetarian/fish/meat dishes. Our 2 waiters were helpful incredibly patient with all of our different needs!

We were perfectly located (for us anyway!) further away from the gondola than some other hotels but we enjoyed the walk into the Piazza (there was a mini bus shuttle if you prefered). It was peaceful with spectacular views.

All in all, a comfortable hotel with pleasant staff...perfect for a skiing holiday!
