“Overnight trip”
Reviewed October 21, 2013 via mobile

Lovely nature trail, beautiful views and monkeys add to the fun.. Good place to get away from main city, but don't think you will be escaping the crowds. Beat enjoyed as part of an overnight trip so you can get away from the crowds. I very much recommend a visit to Matsumoto which is en route - delightful streets and shops

“A Perfect Mountain Escape”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

I was on a tour to Kurobe Tateyama Alpine Route from Nagoya where a 3-hour free time at Kamikochi was included in the tour. Well, of course 3 hours were not enough to enjoy all the wonderful nature there. But, I managed to walk from Taisho Pond to Myojin Pond and then to the bus stop near Kappa Bridge within 3 hours. I think it will take about 6 hours to walk from Taisho Pond to Myojin Pond then to the bus stop including taking break and meal. You do not have to worry about getting lost because all the tracks are well marked and they suitable for all ages. Nothing much to see as you walk down between each of the famous spot. Buy some snacks at Kappa Bridge area and sit down on the riverbanks and enjoy the view.

“Must visit in Japan”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

Kamikochi is definitely one of the must visit places in Japan. It is scenic, admission is FREE and a cool relieve from the hot summer. It is one of the best hiking spots. We took the Nohi bus from Osaka (1625 to 2140) from the bus stop near the 7th exit of the Higashi Umeda station. We bought our bus tickets online although you could purchase it on the bus. The bus tickets cost 17,000 Yen for 2pax : Osaka - Takayama - Kyoto. Please be punctual as the bus leaves on time. There is a luggage compartment and a toilet in the bus. The bus journey from Osaka to Takayama has 2 stops with 20 min break for a quick visit to the clean washrooms and the convenience stores/eateries on the way for you to grab a bite (takoyaki, inari sushi, maki, noodles, bento set). Too short time to gulp down a hot bowl of noodles so passengers pack food to eat on the bus. Take the earliest bus 7 am or 740 am from Takayama station to Hirayu Onsen so that you could catch the connecting 9 am bus to Kamikochi. You could buy the bus tickets from Takayama to Kamikochi (return for 9800 Yen for 2) at the Takayama bus station.

Board the bus at queue number 2 at the Hirayu Onsen. It takes an hour from Takayama to Hirayu Onsen then 25 min from Hirayu Onsen to Kamikochi. There is a free map of the hiking trail available at the bus terminal. http://www.kamikochi.or.jp/english/areamap/
Hiking at Kamikochi is a lovely experience. The trails are easy, well-marked and not strenuous at all. It gets sunny and hot so please have your cap and sunscreen on and carry lots of water and some food. There are lots of snacks on sale at the Kappa bashi shops by the bridge to refuel. Take a picnic lunch along to enjoy at the lovely Taisho Pond area with a few benches to sit. We walked (3 hours return) to the lovely Taisho Pond and Tashiro Pond passing beautiful scenery and vegetation on day 1. I strongly recommend a night's stay at the value for money Kamikochi Nishi-Itoya Mountain Lodge to get the peace and quiet to yourself to enjoy the sunset and sunrise after the crowd has left. You can store your luggage at the reception upon your early arrival before check in time. Kamikochi has the best lighting early in the morning for photography before the sun gets too harsh and the sunset from 430 pm onwards is beautiful. On day 2, we did the board walk from 6 am to 8 am though lovely forest and clear streams enroute to the Myojin Pond (admission charges apply). Public bathrooms are available but please carry your own refreshments and water along. There is free wifi access at the bus terminal. Upon check out, it is a 10 min walk to the bus terminal from the lodge past the Kappa Bashi bridge. Take the 10am bus at queue number 5 from Kamikochi bus terminal for the bus heading to Hirayu Onsen. Don't forget to pass your bus tickets to the driver before you leave the bus. Take the 1030 am bus from queue number 3 from Hirayu Onsen to Takayama. We took the Takayama to Kyoto bus (1440 to 1850) queue no.3. You will pass scenic mountains, greenery and colorful rice fields on the way. Good weather makes a lot of difference. There are lots of people (mostly locals) hiking from 11 am to 2 pm and some even brought their lunch. If you didn't bring your lunch, reward yourself at Kamikochi Kappa Cafe by the Kappa Bashi bridge with a cold beer and some delicious mouth watering croquettes and soba noodles after your hike. It is far to get to from Osaka and Kyoto but it CERTAINLY is worth it.

“Fabulous Views”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

I have been there three time and enjoyed it so much
It is like a secret garden hidden in the Japan North alps
The water the trees and the rocky mountains with snow caps are in so good combination to form a picture once seen will never be forgotten.

“Nice day trip idea”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

I went to Kamikochi for a day trip and here are my thoughts:
- buses and cars go up to the entrance point, so you it's easy to start your trek
- everything is well organised: you can get all the necessary information at the tourist information, the tracks are well marked and you can leave your luggage at luggage storage
- the routes we took turned out to be really easy. And I mean REALLY easy - 99% flat, wide paths - very easy to wander even for older people. We didn't need any trekking equipment
- we got to see makaks just playing around
- there were many people sightseeing, but it wasn't overcrowded. Overall atmosphere is peaceful
- the views are nice, but if you expect "Japanese Yosemite" as I heard - you might be slightly disappointed. Maybe we should have spent some more time there and take on more difficult or longer routes, but I was left a little underwhelmed

To sum up: it's really nice, but don't build up your expectations too much.
