“worth a visit”

This is a nice castle to visit on a sunny day. The tour is only in French though. There are some information sheets in English and the guides do speak English but not for the tour.

“Medieval Castle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

The chateau stands outside the village of La Rochepot and has been restored, but retains many elements of defense such as a drawbridge, narrow slots for firing weapons, and holes covered by wooden planks on the upper walks for defenders to fire at attackers or throw burning oil on them. Another interesting feature is a 72 foot deep well in very hard rock, which was dug with chisels and hammers only in 1228. You can visit one of the towers on a self guided tour to see various furnished living quarters and two walkways. The rest of the castle must bee seen by the guided tour conducted by the staff mostly in French but with some English. Non-French speakers are provided a detailed card in their language for the tour. From the high walkways there are beautiful views of the rural countryside surrounding the chateau and the village of La Rochepot. On the way to or back go through the village of St Aubin, a venue for excellent burgundy white wines. To reach La Rochepot take the D906 for about 12 km from the D974 in the Chagny area. Allow about 1 1/2 hours for your visit. Also carefully check the horaires before leaving to be sure the castle is open when you arrive. It is closed Tuesdays.

I love the village of La Rochepot and its chateau overlooking the village is a photo opportuntiy not to miss (take the back road from ST AUBAN) but be alert for the other tourists who stop suddenly at times to take photos

A very well rehabilitated historical attraction. Fascinating history. Still in private ownership who maintains private quarters at the Chateau. Requires some walking and climbing steps.

“A pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

We (2 adults, 2 children 10 & 11) happened upon the chateau whilst driving around the vineyards near Beaune. We were given a lovely tour (English and French) with only one other couple and were able to wander the pretty grounds befiore and after the tour.
