It might be a challenge to find, as Låktatjåkkostugan is spelled Låktatjåkkastugan on the official regional map over Lappland. Also, the alternative names for the mountain where this place is located may add some confusion for a first time visitor. We saw “official” names ranging from Låktajåkka and Låktatjåkko, to Loktacohkka. If you overcome this first challenge, however and follow my previously published recommendation to stay to the Björkliden-Låktatjåkka hike until the other side of the mountain is dry, then you will be wonderfully rewarded for your effort to come here. Sadly, many people just come over coffee/lunch, almost as if they would be in a rush somewhere. To me, that is like fast forwarding a good song, i.e. hardly an improvement. This rustic little arctic hotel from 1939 deserves better attention than that. First, if you come to Lappland to enjoy the freedom of open landscapes you cannot find easily elsewehere, then give the 9 km walk up here the time it deserves. In my case it took a day with a delicious picnic along the way. Book a 2-night stay and recover from your hike with a great sauna, authentic 3-course meals (must be pre-booked) and a bar you never thought could exist up here. The couple that ran the hotel at the time of our visit were wonderfully kind and helpful. They really made us feel welcome and valued. The rooms have a sink in the bedroom, and no double beds. Up here at 1230 m above the sea, the room view is of course spectacular and our room was perfectly clean. This is a small hotel, like a large family house. The shared shower room with sauna was also perfectly clean and it had direct access to the back yard from the dressing room. It is actually a privilege to be able to step outside from the dressing room to cool down in fresh arctic air after a sauna. Up here, nobody is embarrassed as long as you of course adhere to common sense. Toilets are shared, hygienic and located in the basement, with separate facilities for men and women. A big plus is the shoe-dryer which dries your wet hiking shoes overnight. If you come here in the end of June, as I did, you may want to go out after dinner and maybe a quality whisky or cognac in the bar, to experience the unforgettable beauty of the midnight sun. A qualified quess, given the few places in the world to actually experience the midninght sun, is that this may be one of the better. So let your shoes dry overnight. The return hike can always wait until tomorrow.
