Owner description: These extensive ruins give a glimpse into Totonac society at its height.

Out of all the ruins I've been to throughout Mexico this one is my favorite. It's so different in it's layout, design and size. It's not very crowded, off the beaten track, but easy to find. I suggest you take the self guided tour, the site is fairly small and compact. There is also a museum that has many of the displays in English too. Best to get there early, as it get hot and there is not much shade. After touring the site is a great idea to watch the pole dancers as this is where they originate from, Papantla

If you have been to Teotihucan or Chichen Itza you'll realize this is very less visited and known, but I suggest you take the guided tour in order to understand the importance of this civilization. In order to complete the experience I suggest you buy your self a bag of Naranjas and Jicamas con chile at the far end of the site. Delicious! And on the way out stop by the restaurant and order a Coctel de Camaron. Also delicious!

In my opinion, an average site compared to others I have seen in Mexico. The site is fairly small and only takes about 1-2 two hours to cover it thoroughly. By car, it takes about 45 minutes to Poza Rica and about 10 minutes to Papantla. There are good signs from both towns to get to the site. The site is open 7 days a week, from 9am to 5pm. Entrance fee is 57 pesos per person, free on Sunday. There is small museum on site, along with bathrooms, restaurants and souvenir stalls. The only big plus is that this site is not crowded at all. It can be very hot and humid here during the day, so it is best visited early in the morning when it first opens.

We took a bus trip from Veracruz to Papantla where we stayed. Took a taxi to El Tajin. It was an amazing place! Spectacular Totonaca pyramids. Certainly worth the visit.

This was great! One thing I especially loved was that there were not a ton of tourists like you normally find at places like this! I would have liked more information around the pyramids. There was some info, but not a ton and I wanted to learn more! But other than that it was really amazing to be there and learn about the history !! If you are going to buy vanilla, know that you should be able to get it for 20 pesos. Don't let them rob you inside!
