“Paradise...but”
Reviewed April 20, 2012

The place is amazing, right on the beautiful laguna. The white lagune sand gives it an amazing turquoise color. The water is shallow. Our room had 2 chaises longues on the small deck that can be used if u decide to stay alone, otherwise you could join the other guests ( there aren't many). Food is soooo boring, and doesn't fit the setting. Basically, the people running this place don't have the sense of how to take advantage of the setting. The place is soooo nice and romantic that you just feel like enjoying good food ...sea food, the only sea food we had was frozen fish filet that is served almost everywhere we went. They had wine on display, however, white wine was not chilled, so we had to wait half an hour to enjoy it, and they didn't have a second bottle of the same kind. The room is very comfi hard wood floors, shower overlooking the lake etc. I have to insist that this place is really fantastic, but lacks small details. That would really make a big difference and as mall effort from the management's side would definitely make them more money.

Room Tip: I think all rooms are great.

I am tempted to give Akalki five stars because it is owned by friends of friends, however to make the review honest I give it 4.
The excellent aspects:
1. The rooms are impeccable. All towels and linens smell divine and are so soft! There is a wonderful honey shampoo in the bathroom and they offer candles for romance. The lights are not available until night as they conserve energy, so if you need to charge your phone, you can conveniently do it at the lobby.
2. The grounds are beautifully maintained and it is fun to explore the area either on foot or by kayak! We got a nice welcoming tour by the manager who is from New Mexico and an acupuncturist interesting woman.
3. The food is delicious. Their Horchata water is the best I've had and I am a native of Mexico! We paid for a package and had full breakfast, full lunch and full dinner.
4. Our massages were amazingly delicious.
5. Nacho who lead our Temazcal (sweat lodge) was sweet and genuine.
6. WiFi worked for most of our stay with good signal.
7. The Lagoon is out of this world, with delicious fresh water that is warm and comfortable to swim in at any time of day! Amazing colors.
8. The hammock area is a truly relaxing setting.

What was not so good:

1. For 2,000 pesos (aprox $165 USD), we were offered a 3 hour tour on a Catamaran sailboat to see the Estromatolitos (a form of rare coral) go through tunnels under water and swim in rapids. Our tour lasted 2 hours and would have been shorted since a lot of the time was spent waiting for wind to move our Catamaran. That is 1 hour short of what we paid for. We did not visit any underwater tunnels. When I spoke with the head of the Marina, Luis, he said he would ask the captain. Later he said the captain said he did take us to everything, basically contradicting us. The captain was very nice, however he did not provide us what we paid for. He did not know about the Estromatolitos and basically took us for a nice swim close by for $165 dollars. This is almost as much as what we paid for Xcaret. It was disappointing that Luis didn't offer a discount based on these facts and made us feel cheated and trapped with their services as the only option. The place we went was beautiful and I recommend it, but make sure you get what you are offered.

2. The service at the restaurant was SLOW. many times I got up to get my own things or ask for them at the counter. The package included several things on the menu, however the waiter wouldn't bring them unless we pointed them out. One of them was in training and every time we asked for something he seemed extremely confused and there was no one there to assist him. All that was still OK until checkout where we are told that tip for each meal has been added for our bill. We were not told this and had left a tip in cash on the table.

3. Overall disorganized and at the same time very low key and comfortable.

First of all: it took them 4 days for their reception/reservations staff to reply to us via e-mail that they could not give us a cabaña: we were told at that time (3-4 monts ago) that the hotel was going to be entirely reserved for a group on the week we wanted to come. So, that simply reply took them 4 working days for them to give us. They also do not answer the cell phone always. So you've got to keep trying to reach them. So because of this delay on answering us we booked our Cabaña at Rancho Encantado (at Bacalar lagoon) where we were very welcomed immediately and they replied and confirmed to us the cabaña reservation within one day. That makes a lot of of difference in the service!

Despite this start experience, we decided to give Akalki a second chance by taking a Spa service at their facilities: so we called them and made for ourselves two massage appointments: you absolutely need to give them a credit card number to make a simple spa reservation, if you don't show or cancel they charge you 25% of the cost of the massage.

So, we went to the massage (they didn't offer a pick up service from our hotel, we had to look for our own taxi) and despite our appointment was set up for 11am the massagist guy called us to ask us if we could have the massage an half hour earlier because he had another massages after us -this looked a little bit weird to us, maybe some kind of disscomunication within the hotel staff and the massage therapist working for Akalki guests-. So ok, no biggie and we accepted to show up there half an hour earlier.

Yes, the place it is indeed very nice and beautiful but the service was not: the Spa massage did not meet our expectations: we are world travelers and have been in many European and Asian and the best Mexican Spas. Jose Ramon the massage therapist is a very kind and nice guy -I hope he does not take this personal- but it looked to me as if he got really not a fundamenteded education on the Spa / massage therapy field. I tell you the reasons: the sheets where not fully clean, yes, they had some kind of yellow spots to what the massage therapist replied these stains on the spa sheets just did not go with the laundry. Bad point. Second: my massage lasted less than 60 minutes -he was in a hurry- even though we paid for an hour. Third: The massage therapist only did the back part of our bodies when in every Spa in the world they should give you a "back" and "front" side of the body massage. Forth: we were not offered bathrobe to dress/undress. Fifth: after the massage you end up very oily and they did not offer us any chance to remove from us the oil in some kind of quick shower so we left the place all oily and even my new brand designer leather sandals got stained.

One thing is that the massagist has very strong hands, that could be ok for some people, but the deal to us was that this was my worst massage. It simply was too hard and not done on the front part of my legs and arms, not even my face was done.

The massage therapist was also a little bit smelly. It makes me think of him of not using deo; not the most pleasant thoughts in the world. My worst massage was by a well-meaning, over-eager newbie who left my neck in spasm.

This place was designed to fit perfectly into its natural surroundings. The rooms are set up in various cabin like structures our room being in a kind of treehouse feel on the second floor( most all other were single story ) we loved it with a beautiful view of the surrounding vast landscape . The view from the back balcony as well as shower was of this vast low jungle like landscape with many strange and unusual birds in clear view. Beautifully decorated interior with canopy bed and real interesting architecture . No AC but there were large screened windows and doors
Along w a ceiling fan which was sufficient although it did get a bit humid. Nice front patio with lounge chairs and hammock and views of the lagoon
Other cabins are literally built over the lagoon with decks on the back that u can swim of of or just enjoy the views
The lagoon water is stunning !!
It glows five different shades of blue
Very peaceful , I only saw one power boat . You can swim or kayak
Or just hang out on the pier with a tiki hut like roof
The restaurant is also a wonderful place to take in the views of the lagoon as it sits on shoreline
Great food and drinks but service a bit slow
There is not a whole lot to do other than relax and feel part of this unique environment .
But if that what you want you Wong be disappointed . It's a winner!

I ve been only once in there. Its truly heavenly like Bora Bora. The place is very small only 11 Bungalows but I would go there again if I could. There are a lot of spectecular place in Bacalar, I only recommend this restful tranquility paradise. The place a little more than half an hour from the capital city of Chetumal and also its airport. For this place words cannot express the beauty of sunset and moon light beside daylight all tones of blue colors of Akalki. Our casita on the laguna was lovely, clean and comfortable. The food at the restaurant was delicious. Internet only available in the restaurants. We hope to visit over and over. Its just 270 kms.from Playa del carmen aproximately 3 hours.
