“Stop Over On Way Down France”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2014

I stayed with my wife and 2 daughters at Castel Jeanson on the way down France from the Chunnel.

It's a lovely family run hotel in a quiet village and was just what we needed. There's no dinner, so we ate locally which has limited choice without travelling to another village, but that wasn't a problem. Breakfast was great (extra charge) and there's good secure private parking. Small pool which was ok for the children as they are (also) small.

Room Tip: Normal rooms ok. Suites a bit pricey

Owned and run by a champagne-producing, very hands-on family (Maison Henri GOUTORBE whose champagne house is just up the road), this hotel offers the equivalent of a guided tour of Windsor Castle and park by the Royal family itself. You're likely to have the immaculate, indoor pool, complete with murals, to yourself, too. Contrary to another reviewer's comments, all the staff were very accommodating, from M. Goutorbe down. Perhaps a good, local restaurant wasn't recommended because, as we discovered, there aren't any. So, fill up at breakfast: the selection is comprehensive, and you'll discover the "clacker"!

Room Tip: We had one of the cheaper rooms, on the top floor, but it was perfectly adequate, with an electric b...

Clean, comfortable, well appointed spacious superior room. Peaceful location in this small town but within walking distance of several restaurants, cafe/bars.
Although we did not bother with the breakfast on offer (at 14 euros pp) we did like the all day coffee/tea and biscuit help yourself facility in the lounge.
We also valued the secure parking available.
The owners, the Goutourbe family, we discovered, produced the superb and very competitively priced champagne that we had to try from our bedroom fridge. This inevitably led to a hundred metre trip along the road to their cellars and a tasting which resulted in the purchase of another couple of dozen outstanding (to our palate) champagnes ranging from 14 to 28 euros.

Is bit of a peculiar place: firstly be warned that reception closes at 8.30pm, which was never mentioned during any communications whilst booking with them and nearly caught us out as we were on a long drive from the Southern regions. The receptionists (both) I found were not very friendly or helpful, and wouldn't recommend somewhere to eat which seemed a bit odd.

The room was huge! Lovely big space, huge bathroom, hallway and an extremely comfortable bed. As another user mentioned- there was a little kitchenette in our room with a fridge, kettle, sink and two ring electric hob. However, there were no cups, cutlery, plates, bowls, nor tea or coffee. So the whole space seemed really odd and a bit pointless!

There is a beautiful courtyard and a wonderful indoor pool to use. Now that really was quite lovely. Robes were in the room to saunter in.

Breakfast is in a room that needs a little tlc: it was a bit dated and I half expected a French Basil Fawlty to pop out, which actually would have added some personality given the staff lacked.

Breakfast was plentiful: croissant, breads jams, boiled egg machine, tea coffee, cold meats, smoked salmon, cereal etc. All great for a big day!

It was perfectly pleasant and clean, but given the bizarrely blank and slightly unhelpful staff (and weird kitchen?!) I'm not sure id stay again for the price.

Ay is the village where all the big champagne houses keep their tractors which are regularly cruising along the roads at high speed between yard and vine. This hotel is in the middle of all this action. A beautifully restored old building that is spotless inside with lovely large rooms. The lounge/salon is beautifully decorated with an impressive chandelier. There is a lift, a small pool and a modest-sized breakfast room. The buffet breakfast is cereals, croissants, bread, eggs, cold meats, cheese and the usual drinks. There is a small supermarket and post office etc on the main street about 6-7 mins walk away. We stayed as part of a package so cannot comment on the room prices, though other reviewers seem to feel it is on the expensive side. But if you want to be in Grand Cru tractor country, this is the place.

You know how it is when foibles and lacunae are charming or at least no problem when you aren't paying too much, suddenly become major irritations at a much higher price? It's a bit like that here.
It's the same with gyms. What's acceptable at £20 a month is infuriating at £160. So bye-bye to The Park Club and hello to the new Acton Town Hall gym -- but I digress.
We've stayed here before quite happily but this time only a suite was available. Now, somewhere has to be pretty darn good to be worth over 200 euros a night and should in my view, include breakfast (Mais non, that will be another 28 euros a night s'il vous plait). And if there is a horrendously noisy, smelly car rally taking place literally outside, preventing access to the hotel or its garage on arrival day, surely a warning email is in order. Not just giggles from an unhelpful receptionist. And why, if part of the suite is a kitchenette, have one with no kettle or even pan for the hob, plates, cutlery etc? What's the point?
But Ay is a pretty place, set in the vineyards, with lovely walks in the hills or along the canal. And the hotel has a pretty courtyard and tiny, rather sweet, swimming pool.
So it's a bit of a dilemma....
It's just that, at these rates, the niggles including skimpy towels and very erratic wifi (which went off again while I wrote this, meaning I had to start again grrrr) make more of an impression than they do when the price is keener.

Recently refurbished, this hotel is a gem. Everything was very well done. There are some smaller rooms, but our suite was spacious and well appointed. The bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom has a large shower and dual sinks. Breakfast is a little pricey but includes not only the usual beverages and pastries but also eggs, meat and cheese. A quiet street runs in front of the hotel, making for a tranquil night's sleep. There's an indoor pool, but we didn't use it. The restaurant selection in town could be better, but Epernay is just a short drive away. We enjoyed our stay very much.
