Last minute decision to take a ferry from Sorrento and stay overnight in Ischia. Hotels were sparse. Hotel is across the street from a busy beach. For the amount we paid for our room ($850), I would’ve expected a nice plush room. Walking into the hotel felt like walking into a 3rd world country. Old, moldy smell. Bathroom is tiny. Shower head was old and rusty, beds were very hard like sleeping on plywood, paper thin walls so you could hear the neighbors talking, room keys are actual keys with large heavy key chains in attached, no room decor, furniture was extremely old and fragile and our room was below the bar. Loud party music followed by chairs and tables moving across the floor until 2am and dishes banging in the early morning. If this was a 4 star hotel then my expectations were way too high. I’d rate this a 2 star at best. Who ever gives a good review of this dump is on something. The only good thing about this hotel is that the AC worked really well in the room.

Our expectations weren't too high as reviews have been somewhat negative. However there was a good deal reserving directly from the hotel. I never again trust "secret deals" of the major sites. You might argue if the hotel meets four stars standard as the interior and the exterior is partly outdated but partly charming also. The room was good maybe the balcony outdated. Pool area is small but great and breakfast and dinner quite good. However staff is great which really made our holiday.

We were really looking forward to a great stay. Sadly We were sadly disappointed.
First the majority of the reception staff were disinterested in the guests, unhelpful and rude! One older female receptionist was more interested in sorting out her social plans for the night than helping guests with their requirements.
The breakfasts were boring with no fresh fruit - tinned fruit cocktail was the limit. The toaster was slow and antiquated and the yoghurt uninspiring.
The Room was due for a BIG makeover - cracked hand basin, thin inadequate towels, broken tiles on the balcony. Plastic, throw away drinking cups that were NOT replaced when we throw them away after four days! Another trip to reception - who then told us to get some more from the bar!
The bar was another issue - to get a drink of any sort you had first had to go to reception to load up a little slip of paper they gave you (no credit cards please! Cash only) which when the bar was open you used to pay for your drink. When the bar was open meant evenings only during the week, and afternoon perhaps at the weekend.
The pool and pool area were too small to accommodate the number of guests. It was a small plunge pool rather than a proper swimming pool.
On the plus side the cleaners and the wait staff were friendly helpful and polite.
But this hotel is not somewhere to I would recommend.

Room tip: Look elsewhere!

My wife and I have traveled to Italy numerous times. On this October trip we wanted to visit some different places on the Mediterranean. Fortunately, we chose the island of Ischia and The Grand Hotel. The hotel is worthy of every one of its five stars; we would award more if they existed. Our plush room had a small balcony and a beautiful view of the Sea. Every space throughout the hotel is immaculately maintained and the service is impeccable. We felt like we made friends with the attentive staff including Peppe, Ben, Branka and the owner, Allesandro. We ate each breakfast and dinner in the beautiful dining room. The chef is great! We only stayed three nights but will stay longer on our next visit. We totally understand why the hotel's guests return year after year.

The hotel can be crowded in July, it offers many types of lodging, they offer 3 meals a day,if you sign up for mezza pensione, you are entitled to either lunch or dinner buffet, breakfast is included regardless, the food is very Neapolitan home cooking but plentiful, lots of vegetables and fruit to choose from, wine is extra, one must purchase a ticket at the reception for anything that comes from the bar, that includes coffee. The only problem is smoking,it looks like you cannot sit on the terrace and enjoy your breakfast or an evening drink, there will be always smokers invading your nostrils, other than that it is a nice 1950 style hotel. We booked it through the agency ON THE ROAD they speak English and located in Vigevano Italy

Room tip: Both sides of the hotel have breath taking blue water wiew
