Xamach Dos
Reviewed March 1, 2013

We stayed for four nights in February, looking for peace and serenity. We got it. Xamach is a magical place where all your stress and worries just float away. Dan and Michelle are wonderful hosts, unbelievably fun company, and Hugo kept us deliciously well fed while we were there, catering to my husband's vegetarian diet and seeing to it that everything was tasty. Everything about this place is awesome - the people, the pets, the food and margaritas, the views and the constant, refreshing breeze. We stayed in Sol, then the Treehouse. Stay in the Treehouse!
You can walk the beach forever and not run into another person. At night, I saw constellations in the sky I've never seen before - no light pollution makes for amazing star gazing.
There are some ruts and potholes in the road that goes through Sian Ka'an but a jeep or SUV is not needed, at least this time of year. They're off the grid but have all the amenities for beachfront comfort. The bath/showers are really cool, all made from natural shell and stone. Lots of character. Highly recommend this place. Make sure you play a round or two of coconut bocce while you're there. We will definitely be visiting Xamach again!!

It's hard to decide what to like most about Xamach Dos, the amazing people [owner Dan, manager Michelle, Chef extraordinaire Hugo] or the place - absolute paradise. If you're looking to unwind, de-stress, and welcome tropical bliss into your life, this is the place! I've never been so relaxed, so well-fed, and so enjoyed a vacation. You absolutely cannot go wrong by staying here. The accommodations are wonderful, the service exceptional. It was incredibly hard to leave after a week - a few nights will not be enough!! The reef is right there, and you get to experience brown pelicans diving for fish and hanging out all day, a real treat. In sum, this place is AWESOME!!! I can't wait to go back!!

Room Tip: we stayed in the tree house, it was so great! I enjoyed yoga on my front deck amidst palm trees and...

Xamach Dos is where you want to be if you want/need quiet, casual, comfortable beachside rest. We just stayed there, only 2 nights, but enjoyed it thoroughly. We were in Luna, a large thatched cabana with a separate, but very close, toilet/shower mini-cabana. Loads of windows, plus a ceiling fan made the sleeping temperature/breeze factor perfect. Dan, the owner, is King of Danlandia down here, what an interesting character, knows his scifi. His daughter, Michelle, is the GM and works constantly to see all her guests are comfortable. Hugo, Michelle's significant other, is the chef and delivers delicious food. Meals are about $12 (breakfast/lunch/supper) and well worth it. The portions were always more than I could finish. Shelley's margaritas are both lethal and delicious. The beach is cleaned each morning, because, as another reviewer noted, the world's garbage washes ashore on the Tulum coast. The plastic crap on the beach is so unbelievable and saddening - Dan said there's plastic there from Africa, washing on the currents completely across the ocean. Be prepared - from the Sian Ka'an arches, it's a 40/45 minutes trip down rutty roads - in dry weather. Watch out for the one sign about half way down and then the entrance sign 20 minutes after that. Well, well worth the trip. Thanks to Dan, Shelley & Hugo for a wonderful, too short stay.

Room Tip: I wish we'd booked earlier for the tree house, but the Luna Cabana was very nice.

How quickly the rush of work, the mundane aspects of daily life, engulfed me once I returned, but reading the other reviews of this place has brought me back once again, albeit briefly, to the joys of Xamach Dos! My husband and I stayed in Sol (one of the cabanas) three nights in mid-November, and it was exactly what the doctor ordered! We had just been to a fancy expensive wedding in Tulum and were dying to get away from family and civilization for awhile -- turns out Xamach Dos was the perfect antidote to all of that! I concur with the others that the long and bumpy drive is a useful deterrent to the hoards that might otherwise descend on this slice of heaven, and we didn't mind it at all. It was frankly very exciting! We finally got to the little driveway, and there were Michelle, Sergio, and Armando, awaiting our arrival -- Michelle, in particular, was warm and welcoming, sweet and kind, and quickly had Sergio whip us up an absolutely delicious meal with fresh fish and some very special sauce! We shared a beer or two and chatted while we waited for the arrival of Dan, her father, and Hugo, her boyfriend and the lead cook at Xamach Dos. We sat in the palapa and under the stars, watched the crabs scuttling along the beach, met the dogs (Vincent and Valentino, who became close companions) and Balam, the kitten. Ahhhh. Peace, joy, serenity! Thank you thank you thank you, Michelle, for your warm and attentive welcome. The next days passed all too quickly. We took long (and I mean long -- 6-8 miles?) walks on the beach, noticing the garbage on other parts of the beach, evidently from cruise ships and from places far flung (labels from Haiti, Cuba!) that slightly marred the beauty of the walk, but only a little. As another reviewer put it, that garbage is us, and the Xamach Dos denizens have nothing to do with it. Dan, Michelle and the crew are wonderful attentive to the environmental risks of our throwaway culture, and take pains to avoid contributing to that. V&V (the dogs) accompanied us on our long walks, which was a real treat! On our return, we took showers in our wonderful little indoor shower, built by Dan, that incorporates conch shells into the design, so that at different times of day the light shines through them and gives a lovely pink glow. After that a beer, a game of scrabble, and one of Hugo's many wonderful culinary creations! I too loved the communal meals, sitting with the gang under the palapa, admiring Dan's many creations with driftwood and shells. It was truly heavenly. We were alone the first two nights, and on the third some other people began arriving for the start of the vacation season -- that, too, was wonderful, as we met truly interesting people from places far flung. I did not want to leave, ever!!! Thank you, Dan, Michelle, Hugo, Sergio, Armando, for a truly memorable visit, and for your delightful companionship. We will be back!!!

How to begin...this was truly an amazing experience at Xamach Dos. The whole crew, Dan, Michelle, Hugo, the staff, and the furry friends that we couldn't get enough of made us feel like we were part of an extended family.
My husband and I had traveled down this road to Punta Allen about two years ago and had a bad experience getting the car stuck in the sand(we were being a little too ambitious with a non 4 wheel drive). So we vowed to return one day, and we did. We headed to Xamach Dos for our 5 year anniversary. So glad we did.
Every day, the exploring around the hotel was unbelievable. We saw sea turtles, barracuda, several types of tropical fish and birds, mayan ruins, and even a large crocodile on our drive back. This area is truly a gem and a place you really can feel like a part of the natural environment. It is very clear that Dan is extremely mindful of the environment with every aspect of the hotel(for example most materials he used to build the place were found on the beach). Yes, the beach has trash on it(not directly in front of the resort), but this is a result of the pollution we create and is unfortunate, but didn't affect the trip for us at all.
The meals were excellent. My husband and I have worked in the restaurant industry for years and both the service and the fine feasts Hugo and his team produced were extraordinary. I thought they were very well priced too.
My favorite time of the day was at night, gazing at the stars I miss living in Brooklyn and sitting down for some good old fashioned conversation over a cold beer in the middle of nowhere with the Xamach crew.
Our room was exactly what we expected and we were happy with it. The only thing that was a little unfortunate was the mosquito bites, but we have been to this area before and it is part of being in the biosphere. There were so many wonderful aspects to focus on during our stay, that it really didn't bother us.
Overall, we hope we will be back one day but we will definitely never forget. Miss it already...

When you drive to this place, you have to prepare yourself for 23km of bumping fun in the car. But it is diffently worth it!! We ended up staying there twice during our 14days vacation. First time 4 nigths and then 3nigth squezed in the end of the vacation. This is the most wonderful and relaxing place. The owners hospitality is so overwhelming. We felt terrible when we had to leave, but we have already planned to come back next year.

We arrived at this exotic escape in the dark after a long and bumpy journey on the potholed road that separates Xamach Dos from the tourist areas further north along the Caribbean coast. This road also separates the "tourist" from the true explorer. Xamach Dos is an amazing escape. We were greeted warmly by Michelle (who manages the place), her father Dan (whose artistic vision, built the place) and Hugo, Michelle's boyfriend who prepared our meals during our 3 night stay. We were lucky to be the only guests during our visit and we immediately felt like extended family. We sat around the table in the open dining room, with it's amazing towering roof surrounded only by nature and enjoyed great conversation with the family. Our cabana was perfect -- comfortable, beautiful colours, doubled beds covered with mosquito netting, a view from the beds of the beach and palm trees! Divine. During our stay we went out in the kayak to the reef and snorkeled, swam in the warm Caribbean sea, walked along the beach and for miles saw nothing but ocean, jungle and beautiful birds. By the end of day we were ready for one of Michelle's amazingly good margaritas, and a great meal and conversation around the table. This is one of the last unspoiled places in the world. A true gem. We can't wait to return, and we will! Mary (from New York) and Christine (from Buenos Aires). Viva Mexico y Xamach Dos!!!!!

Room Tip: Cabana Luna is fantastic!
