You must visit the peace and tranquility of the Sian Ka'an reserve. The beauty of the are is truly amazing. You can watch all of your stress float away as you listen to the waves and look at the water. A must see if you are in the Tulum area.

This boat trip starts at Pesca Maya fishing lodge.

Most people choose pickup from hotel service, but if you drive - then the lodge is about 10 min north of Punta Allen and you can't miss it, but the dirt road is bumpy and takes about 1:30-2hrs from Tulum.

The trip starts at 8am (in winter at least) and takes about 3 hrs on a fast boat that can take 2 to 5 people, plus the guide. We saw 2 kind of turtles: a slow shallow water turtle and unbelievably fast pelagic ocean turtle. We saw dolphins. We saw birds island, and it was mating season in December. We snorkeled in Sian Kaan barrier reef (very good shallow reef, lots of healthy coral). We swam in gorgeous natural swimming pool lagoon. We also learned a special way to open beer bottles. And we ate excellent and very tasty lunch.

Our guide was Nestor and he was very good at spotting various sea creatures under water.

Sian Kaan is a gorgeous place and this tour is one of the best of Sian Kaan, IMO. Recommended.

We loved this place. Mexico is such a wounderful country, but as soon as you make your way towards the Yucatan it gets a bit crazy, filled with (mostly American) tourists, noise, and expense. A short drive from Tulum, Sian Ka'an was an oasis in the middle of that craziness. If you have the chance, stay a night or two at the Cesiak tent cabins in the middle of the Reserve, so you truly get to experience the beauty and serenity of this wonderful place!

The reserve is a wonderful place to spend some time. We arranged two tours to make the most of the area.

We were there in May `12; took a day long tour with Ben, who had a degree in anthropology, spoke fluent English, and was about the best tour guide ever. Informative, not to intrusive, clearly loved his job and the mission to preserve the environment. The best part was the half hour float in the river, between the mangroves. Hotel transfers, water and lunch is provided. The boat captain was great; his boat was well-maintained, clean and quiet and did nothing to disturb the atmosphere. It was easily one of the highlights of our time in Mexico. CESIAK is also a conservation/research center, so your fees for the tour go towards preserving the land and assisting in research. I was happy I spent my money here.
