Coopershill in beautiful Co. Sligo is a magnificent Georgian house which has been occupied by the O'Hara family for seven generations. Simon O'Hara (and Alice the dog) welcomed us to his home and made us feel completely at home. Nothing was too much trouble. And he was a mine of information on the area.

There are just eight rooms, all very spacious with beautiful views from the windows. The whole house is furnished with antiques, many of them originals from when the house was built in the mid-1700s.

Christina is in charge of the kitchen, producing delicious food with many ingredients straight from the kitchen garden or Coopershill Farm - couldn't be fresher.

Coopershill is a very special place and I'm sure we'll be back there before too long.

As soon as Simon greets you at the door you instantly relax into this beautiful country house. It is much more like staying with friends rather than booking into a hotel. This is the place you go to when you need to chill - cut yourself off from the hustle and bustle with no TV, radio or internet (but don't panic, you can get a mobile signal!)

The staff are lovely and we felt nothing was too much trouble for them. Comfortable, beautiful rooms and lovely grounds. We loved being taken for a walk around the grounds by Alice the dog and looking for the elusive peacock.

The meals focused on the best local produce. This was not fine dining but really good homestyle cooking.

As there are only a handful of rooms and we all dine at the same time so you do get to know your fellow guests and it is nice to catch up with everyone's ventures.

This is a hotel for grown ups who are comfortable making their own entertainment. If you want spas and a busy nightlife this may not be for you. Saying that the pubs and bustle of Sligo town is only a ten minute drive away.

I was in two minds about putting up this review - sometimes you don't want a good secret to get out!

Having spent several days visiting Georgian country houses, it was a treat to drive up the long winding road to Coopershill, through beautiful woods and pastures, and discover that we were staying at the most handsome of all houses that we visited!

Coopershill is a stunning palladian-style villa finished in 1774 that has been beautifully maintained and beautifully furnished -- because it has remained in the hands of the same family for 8 generations. But there is nothing stuffy about the place. As soon as we parked the car, Simon O'Hara -- the charming, early 40s owner -- came out and greeted us, collected our bags, showed us our gorgeous room, introduced us to Christina (his partner and chef for the dining room), and pointed out a quick walk around the property before drinks time. We asked if Alice, their sweet Brittany Spaniel, could join us, and off the three of us went to explore the deer pastures (they are developing an impressive venison business), veg farm, abandoned wall garden (an upcoming prroject), and other wonderrful 18th century out-buildings.

After a quick shower in our well appointed bathroom, we joined the other guests for drinks in the drawing room in front of the fire, and then a superb dinner (almost everything was sourced locally -- tomato and orange soup, duck breast and great veg, excellent Irish cheese course, and a truly delicious chocolate roll and poached pears). Christina trained at Ballymalloe (the mecca for new Irish cuisine) and clearly knows her stuff. They also have a wonderful wait staff, who happily let us have seconds of the dessert, and told us not to worry when we accidentally spilled coffee on the handsome antique table!

Breakfast was equally delicious -- Christina offers a fairly extensive menu, and we opted for scrambled eggs and kippers, and farm yogurt and fruit. Since it was pouring rain in the morning and we couldn't do more walking as we had hoped, Simon advised us on some indoor activities -- the National Museum of Country Life, which was less than an hour away. So off we went -- very sad that we had only booked for one night at this wonderful and magical country house -- but knowing that we would return at some point in the future.

If you are planning a visit to the West, you should be sure to spend a few nights at Coopershill -- it is a remarkable mix of Irish history, architectural beauty, luxurious comfort, and really nice and charming owners.

Have been visiting Sligo for years and this is the finest place in Sligo, indeed in Ireland, I have ever stayed. It won't be to everyone's taste - if you think Celtic Tiger hotels are great, or are looking for the latest "Spa" treatment, probably don't come here.

Coopershill House is a beautiful Irish country house. It stands in a large well preserved estate, with beautiful old trees and paths all around. The interior is beautifully preserved, with delightful collections of antiques and art. You will really feel like you've stepped back in time. The bedrooms are very large and ours was ensuite. There are no televisions or radios in the rooms. In many ways this is one of the really nice things. You are cut off from the outside world and time slows down.

There is a wonderful little spaniel "Alice" who gives great tours around the grounds. There are tumbledown farm buildings, deer, cattle and sheep in the fields. Unlike so many places, there are no chalets cluttering the grounds, nor any golf course. Instead you get mature trees, bluebells and other wild flowers.

We had dinner in the house. The food is wonderfully fresh, without being haut cuisine and is excellent value. The hum of conversation is the only sound in the room.

The bed was very comfortable and perfectly quiet.

Simon and his staff made us feel wonderfully welcome.

All in all - probably the best place I have ever stayed in Ireland. If you want a taste of real hospitality, wonderful surroundings and a great sense of history and comfort, you will struggle to find a better place. Just hope the weather is kind to you.

We stayed just one night, but it was so relaxing, no tvs in room. Old fashioned charm. Just the place to chill out and enjoy walks, accompanied by Alice, Coopershill springer spaniel, and good home cooked food. Not for people that want action, slow is the pace and that was excellent.

Along with our cousins, my wife and I stayed at Coopershill for two nights. Upon arrival, the warm welcome from Simon O'Hara made us feel as if we had come home to our own family country house. This was the most-enjoyable accomodation of our 8 day visit to Ireland. Simon and his team attended to every detail and took the time to share some personal history of the home and the area. The meals were spectacular and the cocktails in front of the fire combined with the after-dinner cordial in the drawing room ended each day wtih a sense of total relaxation. Although other inns and "castles" were more lavish on our trip, we got a true country-house experience that only comes with gracious hospitality.

Upon returning home we were amused to read the other reviews on Coopershill. We would certainly NOT recommend this to twenty-somethings looking for a hot time ... but a great place for walks, seaweed baths, and exploring ancient architectural sites.

In every respect, this is a first-class country house experience.

Stayed 3 nights at Coopershill and enjoyed every minute. Highlights for us were the fantastic evening meals (the fish was first class); prepared picnics for our day trip adventures and taking Alice the resident spaniel for her pre-dinner walks. The whole stay felt as if you were a house guest at a country estate, and Simon O'Hara is a wonderful host.

Other guests were a varied mix from young couples to retired Amercians and pre / post dinner conversation was very entertaining.

A superb break in lovely countryside - the beaches of Sligo are amazing.
