What a place, after a long drive from Bandarawela we arrived at the Ellerton, a haven in the middle of a dense Srilankan jungle, stay in the Valley house if possible near the wonderful pool, also the restaurant and all amenities. The hosts, Cary and Richard were most gracious and provided all the counsel we needed for our brief visit. Staff and food were to die for, wwe should have stayed longer

Room Tip: Valley House rooms

A spontaneous festive decision took us once again from snow-clad Europe to the shores of lovely Sri Lanka, and inevitably to the gates of Ellerton. As before our last minute enquiries were welcomed by Richard and Cary with utmost geniality, and we managed to score nights in the newly opened Valley Room. This is a stunning addition to the Ellerton suites, the secret of which I shall not divulge, that being the reward for those who make the journey. Suffice it to say that after rattling around on trains, soaking in a hot bath with a Harry-G&T was ludicrously enjoyable. Sadly we find it hard to recommend Ellerton - because selfishly we would love to keep it to ourselves. However in saying that for those, like us, who have visited before we wish many happy returns.

I hate sounding like a broken record, but I must add to the large compendium of 5 star reviews for Ellerton. Cary and Richard Goode are the most generous and charming hosts. Cary is a very keen gardener and it really shows in her superb garden. Our room was large and clean and beautifully decorated. Five hotels in 3 weeks and this was by far the nicest, as it felt that at last you had come home! There is a wonderful walk through the paddy fields and the adjoining hamlet. The only problem with our stay was that we only had one night here. A further footnote is that Cary provided the most fantastic and reliable and SAFE driver, Asitha. Without him we might not have come home in one piece! Many thanks, Pam and Tim Williams

We really enjoyed our stay here. We were a bit unlucky with the weather and were unable to spend any time at the lovely pool as we had the heaviest downpour I have ever seen in my life... It is a bit on the expensive side though.. by far the most expensive place we stayed on our journey. The service here was exceptional. I thought it was very friendly at all the places we stayed in Sri Lanka but here it was so relaxed and professional compared to other places. Food also very good. Room in main house was large and cosy but the bathroom needed an upgrade, I'm not really sure it was worth the 300 USD/night. The owners were away for the most part of our stay and we did feel they needed someone stand in as a host - no one came and said goodbye when we left which felt a bit odd. All in all a good experience though and would recommend it if you don't mind a secluded place and if you have the money.

We are pleased that you enjoyed most aspects of your stay at Ellerton, and of course we, like most of Sri Lanka, did have poor weather in early January, but I can say that we just had seven days of uninterrupted sunshine!

To deal with the issue that you raise about price, I think you are not being completely fair for various reasons. Firstly, you actually paid $270 per night and it was of course for three people. Then, you don't make it clear that this is the TOTAL price, since it includes B&B, but also all tea and coffee; drinks, including alcoholic, throughout the day; use of a large range of facilities such as bicycles; croquet and other games; a 1000 book library, and, very importantly ALL government taxes and service charge. This means that, unlike other hotels, that is the total price you pay, and the only "extras" are lunch, dinner and laundry.

When this is taken into account, I genuinely feel that Ellerton offers remarkable value for money.

I am sorry that no one said goodbye to you, since we do try to make a point of doing just that, but Ellerton is run as a private house, so there is no reception, and it can be difficult for us or our staff to know when people are actually leaving.

Ellerton is a triumph of understated elegance, embraced by its beautiful gardens with distant views of Adam's Peak. We stayed in the Valley House, beside the pool. The rooms are generous and comfortable. Books and antiques abound and service is impeccable without being intrusive.
Food was excellent - wild boar curry and green tea panna cotta come to mind; the Sri Lankan omelettes, tropical fruit and buffalo curd were a perfect breakfast. The two resident dogs were quietly friendly and the owners couldn't have done more to make the stay memorable. They've created a very lovely haven of peace and tranquility.

Room Tip: All lovely, airy and beautifully decorated but especially loved mine, opening onto the terrace by th...

Having read many a previous review, I was prepared for the slow and harrowing drive up to Ellerton. Apon arrival, it was quickly clear that we'd found something special. The gardens are the most beautiful we saw in all of Sri Lanka, inclusive of the Kandy Botanical Gardens (which, while special, don't have the immediate impact of Ellerton's). The main house is immaculately presented, but we had the pleasure of staying in the Valley House, which affords a sense of privacy and old-world charm second to none. The staff were relentlessly perfect, and the food just as good. I can't wait to return and do it all again. Delightful.

Favorite property of my (5 hotel) stay in Sri Lanka. Yes, it's a hike from the city, but a few hours in Kandy is all you need: think of Ellerton Bungalow as a destination in and of itself.

PROS
- Large, beautiful English home with plenty of common areas in which guests can relax and mingle
- Nice breakfast and dinner, served outside
- Exceptional service: beers in frosty mugs just a handwave away
- Clean: the property is continuously maintained throughout the day
- Two friendly dogs, one disinterested cat
- Beautiful premises (one of the owners designs gardens)
- Pool with a valley view
- Shared deck conducive to interacting with other guests
- Complimentary breakfast, drinks, wi-fi
- Countryside walking available (people I passed were friendly; dogs were iffy)
- Attention to detail (closets that lock, flowers in the room, thorough book on the property that included a map
- Attractive decor (white with splashes of color)
- Comfortable, homey
- Fun guests
- Owners run their business well

CONS
- Takes awhile to reach
- Could not receive wi-fi signal from room, pool deck
- Some ants in the bathroom sink (the price you pay for being surrounded by nature)

Room Tip: All rooms are wery nice, but they vary in size, view, proximity to (sometimes loud) deck and relatio...

Thank you very much for the objective review of Ellerton, and we are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay so much. However, Kitty, the white Ellerton cat, assures us that he is far from disinterested in what is going on here. It is possible that, during your visit, he was particularly fatigued after a night's hunting!
