“Lovely place but make sure the owners are around when you visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

We were here in the monsoons when Goa is lashed by massive rains every day and any hotel struggles to make things work. Vivenda is blessed with its location - about 12-15 minute walk from the beach and yet far away from all the noise. It is located in a village just off the main road and it is a very peaceful place. Yes, there are the usual sounds that one would expect in a village. also, this is more of an urban village than a rural one. A charming little place, Vivenda is a delight for so many reasons, but primarily because it is a home away from home. You simply dont get the feeling that you are staying in a hotel and that is a big plus for me. the pool is charming, not the usual big fancy ones but good enough to get a nice swim and relax. The food was simply great, though the coffee was terrible. We found the food a tad expensive, and perhaps they dont expect their guests to eat there too much. The place has a lot of charm and history, almost a little quaint.

Each room is different and ours was tucked away from the main house and was full of books of the owners. I loved just flipping through that extensive collection of books (and there are more in the main house). Vivenda is a place where you should not go if your expectations are that of a 'hotel' - it has everything that you may need on a holiday but is clearly meant for those guests who like to keep to themselves and will not demand the earth (and the moon) from the staff. It is a place where you are expected to be accommodating. We had an unfortunate issue with our AC (August can get quite humid at nights) - it was malfunctioning and the person who showed us our room on Day 1 knew about it. The staff, none of them even remotely technically inclined, tried all kinds of stunts to get it to work (from kicking the transformer to multiple changes in the batteries of the remote). While their attempts worked on an occasion it didnt on the next night and we slept with the fan. On the 3rd night, back from a long party in Baga, I could not bear it anymore and persuaded the security guard to let us sleep in one of the vacant rooms. The staff, while responsive, displayed the typical Goan attitude (of taking things casually) and I am very sure that would not have been the case if the owners were around to supervise them. We would go back for sure, but will ensure that one of the owners is around so that everything works the way it is supposed to.

Room Tip: there are only 5-6 rooms and each one is uniquely different. I liked ours (almost an outhouse next t...

I have visited India many times before but not visited Vivenda before and seeing the previous review we were a little concerned but once there all our worries were dispelled by the wonderful welcome given by Charlotte, Simon and all the staff. Nothing was too much trouble for any one from the pool man to Simon or Charlotte. Our room (Madras) was still being prepared but Simon gave us a drink and tour despite the fact he was half way through his lunch at the time.
The layout of the property was interesting and the rooms well laid out each one being different. There were quite a few smokers staying but they did not cause any discomfort at all as the rooms were fare enough apart from each other and like everyone else we kept our windows closed to make maximum use of the AC.
The pool area was especially nice and I have attached several photos of it. We saw no evidence of cracked steps rusty furniture etc. There was a rattan chair which had a broken seat but this happens in tropical climates as they tend to rot due to the heat and humidity. The quality of towels was also more than acceptable and they were also all changed every day unlike some more expensive places we have stayed in.
There was some interesting people staying during our week there with most people being travellers not tourists so we were able to swap experiences of our journeys over G&Ts or dinner at the lovely alter table. We could have eaten privately but chose to eat at the large table for the interesting chat. All the food was delicious we particularly enjoyed the giant shrimps, the Masala omelette was my choice for breakfast along with fresh fruit cocktail and toast.
The beach was a stroll of about 15 minutes away but feeling lazy on a few days we asked for the Tuck Tuck which was provided free of charge.
We enjoyed the pool and the surrounding area as there was plenty of shade provided by the trees or sun in other places. The balcony at the front was a good place to sit and watch the world go by whilst trying to read! The famous Zeebops sea shack was a good alternative place to eat dinner with the stuffed prawn popadoms being especially good, the reggae shack just by Zeebops was good for music and food too. If you fancy a dosa there is a good South Indian fast food place in a nearby village Simon was kind enough to take us there and bring us back again when we couldn't get a taxi.
Overall a fantastic place to stay Charlotte and Simon were excellent hosts.

I had expected Vivanda to be special but I would not recommend other travelers to stay there. First impressions were mixed, the house is pleasant but we were not greeted at all and had to ask to be told about the facilities, layout and information about the area. I was shocked to discover that smoking was allowed both inside and in the gardens. As all rooms are on the ground floor this was most unpleasant especially at night.

I was particularly shocked by the condition of the pool area. The steps into the pool were cracked, which made the pool so uninviting that , in fact, I did not use the pool at all. The condition of the outdoor furniture was, in my opinion , appalling, rusty reclining chairs, grubby covers and cushions, broken rattan reclining chairs and a dirty, rusting outdoor fan.

Also the quality of both indoor and outdoor towels provided was very poor.

We stayed for 9 nights in November and had a really lovely time. The whole place is calm and tranquil and the rooms are all different and interesting. We had the Konnagar suite which is at the front of the house and is huge with a big comfy 4 poster and massive bathroom. Charlotte and her team are so helpful and friendly and the food is very good. Locally, Majorda village and the beach are about 15 min walk away and we recommend The Pentagon restaurant with its family atmosphere and live music if you can resist Vivenda's wonderful set menu which changes daily. As previous reviewer says you must have dinner with your fellow guests if poss as the fact that we met so many interesting people during our stay really made our holiday. Also, the lorry back bar is the place to try one of Lennie's Bombay sours which he served with a smile every night!!

Room Tip: Konnagar suite at the front so would be away from noise of dining area but rooms around the pool are...

Everything about Vivenda is top notch; beautifully appointed rooms, fantastic food, attentive and friendly staff, homely atmosphere (make sure you sit down to dinner with fellow guests at least once!), and a lovely beach just a stroll away. A (much better version of a) home away from home!

Room Tip: All are beautiful; fully reflected in website photos.

We have been staying there 1 week end of October. The day we arrived was the birthday of my girlfriend and prior to our arrival I have asked Charlotte and Simon (the owners) if it was possible to organize something special for the diner. They came with very nice ideas and it was really a very nice birthday diner (good food, very nice decorations and wonderful band), we will for sure not forget this moment.
The complete staff of Vivenda is really professional and friendly and they do everything for you to feel like home. The food is good, rooms are spacious and clean. The "standard" is to share meals with other guests but if you want some privacy there is no problem and you can eat in your room or on some separated table.
There is a wide choice of books available for borrowing the time of your stay.
Vivenda is located about 15 minutes by walk from the Majorda beach (clean and calm in October).

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are by the swimming pool, other one near the dinning room... so you better ask adv...

My wife and I stayed at Vivenda for 4 nights in February and very much enjoyed our stay. Most of the earlier reviews are correct – it’s a quirky and charming place, and Simon and Charlotte are helpful and equally charming hosts. Others have stated how it has the feel of a stay with friends, and again this was true of our experience. The communal elements: both the large shared breakfast table and the bar area were great places to share tips, experiences and general conversation with the eclectic mix of guests. That element of the stay would not usually be our thing but we both thoroughly enjoyed this .
Our room – Madras, was relatively basic and although it wasn’t luxurious it was clean, roomy and comfortable. The outdoor bathroom was a nice touch. The only negative is that the room was dark and the lighting poor, although this would be difficult to rectify without destroying the character of the property.
The beach was an enjoyable 10-15 minute walk away, as were several decent restaurants – Simon also gave us a lift to a restaurant slightly further afield and local taxis were also readily available.
Overall, an interesting property with great hosts and staff which led to an enjoyable experience – we would return for a short stay, and recommend to others looking for an alternative to a manicured, soulless hotel.
