“Best food in Italy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

We just came back from Sicily and stayed in Pensione Tranchina for 3 days. Marasin is the perfect hostess. The place is spotless and very well maintained. The dinners are spectacular. The freshest fish we've ever eaten. The dishes are all simply prepared but the most delicious food in Italy. We used the pensione as home base and spent the days touring cities around Scopella. It was a remarkable experience which we hope to come back to.

Room Tip: The top floor has great views but its 61 steps up to the room, for those with bad knees.

The Tranchina provided us with an excellent and very good value introduction to Sicily. The Pensione is family run - the house has been in Salvatore's family for generations. Photographs of 1950's Scopello show just how far life in Sicily has changed in the last 50 years or so. Food is a central and excellent theme to the place. Breakfasts and dinners all use local and seasonal produce (olive oil is from the family's own trees and the jam at breakfast is home made) are prepared immaculately and served proudly by Marisin who is an excellent hostess ensuring that all her guests are comfortable, well fed and understand the food that has been prepared in her kitchen. Dinners were all on the basis of pasta and fish, though meat dishes can be prepared for those that cannot get on with aquatic pleasures.

Rooms here are simply furnished using good quality fixtures and fittings; details such as the hair-dryer have all been selected with an eye for quality. We passed the kitchen every night on the way up to our room and could see that it was kept scrupulously clean and well ordered. All in all an excellent Pensione and many thanks to Marisin for her generous hospitality.

Marisin is the loveliest person we met in Sicily. Hers is a gift of bringing people together to share, if only for a few minutes, their experiences and their culture. This is the whole point of a bed and breakfast and is almost always overlooked by hosts. The food is great and super-fresh. The room was comfortable and the breakfasts, which were delivered to your table, delicious. We should've stayed longer as it was by far the best accommodation we had.

Room Tip: The trip to the 4th floor is worth the little extra for the view.

We arrived just before dinner and had a warm welcome from Marisin, who brought us wine and introduced us to some of the other guests after showing us our room.

The quality of that first dinner set the tone for the whole week. Meals started with an imaginative pasta dish, followed by the freshest of local fish and a side serving of salad or vegetables (my favourite was the chargrilled aubergine), then local fruits in season, a dessert, and coffee/tea/tisane/home-made limoncello etc.

Breakfasts began with a heaped plate of up to six different varieties of local fruits in season, fruit juice, real bread (none of your quick-rise rubbish here) with organic olive oil from Marisin & Salvatore's own olives, local cheeses, home-made preserves (orange marmalade made with fruit grown in the garden across the piazza, and fig & pear preserve to name just two), small cakes baked in-house the evening before, and all the coffee/tea/tisanes you could want.

We had an end room with a balcony for 5 days, and changed to another room without a balcony for the final two days (we had been rather late in booking and someone else had booked the first room for our final two days). Some reviews had led us to think that we would only have 'distant glimpses' of the sea from our balcony, but our photo will show just how good the view was.

The rooms were very clean and simply furnished with everything we needed, and had firm, very comfortable beds, and bathrooms with good showers. There is also air-conditioning. The fridge with complimentary chilled bottles of water was a nice extra, as was the small safe. Marisin lent us beach towels and a sun umbrella.

We came to Scopello for a rest and so didn't hire a car or visit the rest of the island (so we need to return!) and walked everywhere. We didn't find the temperatures in mid-September a problem, though avoided walking much in the heat of the day.

Part of the Zingaro reserve (small entrance fee) was closed to visitors as there was a danger of fire because the vegetation was so dry, so we were only able to swim from the first bay in the reserve. This has a clean shingle beach and crystal-clear water. Despite the limited access, we were able to visit two visitor centres on the reserve, which have excellent displays of the fauna/flora/geology of the area. These centres have toilets/washrooms. There is also a specialist library and herbarium, though I don't know if casual visitors can use these. A captive breeding programme for the rare tortoise Testudo hermanni is associated with one of the visitor centres, and also displays (and maybe demonstrations, though I'm not sure) of the basketry that is typical of the area. There is a picnic area with shaded tables/benches, though we didn't use this. At the entrance to the reserve there is a small souvenir shop and refreshment kiosk (I recommend the lemon granita, so refreshing after a walk!).

The Lido Cala Mazzo di Sciacca (not sure about the spelling) is another excellent beach for swimming and snorkelling, within easy walking distance; one day when we arrived only three fishermen were there, although other visitors arrived later in the morning. The advertising board suggests that refreshments are available, but this may just be during the main holiday season as nothing was on sale when we visited, and the toilets were closed.

We also walked to the Tonnara but found this rather crowded as we went on a Sunday. It may be quieter during the week.

We had coffees, gelatos, and delicious pastries in the village; the post office was open 3 days a week; there is a very small village shop and a larger store perhaps 1.5 km towards Castellammare.

We recommend Pensione Tranchina very highly and do hope to return!

The efforts of the hosts to make a warm and friendly atmosphere is the real highlight of Pensione Tranchina, as well as the superb food. The location is only 40 minutes from Palermo Airport, but feels like you are being exposed to a wilder part of Sicily. Overall - would highly recommend to all.

We stayed here for 3 nights. It's a wonderful location and the assistance of Marisin and Salvatore makes this place extra special! The dinners are healthy and delicious and brings all the guests together each evening. It deserves to have the number 1 rating and we cannot recommend it highly enough! If we ever come back to Scopello, this is where we will stay! Thank you Marisin and Salvatore for providing us with such a warm and enjoyable time!
