“Eclectic and fun but food needs a loving hand”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

Had breakfast at Hoi Polloi yesterday morning. It's an eclectic and interesting spot in a typical small, South African tourist town. The stairs were a little daunting but unless you have physical challenges, aren't hard to negotiate.

The menu looked promising and the service was efficient and unobtrusive. When the food (eggs benedict and eggs florentine respectively) arrived, it was beautifully presented and showed some refinement. Eggs cooked very well.

Sadly, there was no seasoning or lemon used in the hollandaise and it was very bland. The home-made granola bread - although a nice idea - is very sweet and I would personally have preferred the option of regular toast or a more traditional English muffin.

The outside location is great for watching the world go by.

Worth a visit if you're tired of the usual heavy small town food and restaurant option.

“Order the oxtail at your peril!”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

Undercooked tiny portion with undercooked farm style vegetables. Yours for R110. No sommelier with a horrible Warwick cab sav to go with it. Did not stick around to "fill in the client feedback form".

“Modern gourmet meals in a quaint town”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

What a gem. We were blown away by the quality of the food. Their clipboard menu leaves a slight worry in the back of your mind but it made what we recieved even more fantastic.

A quirky location up some quite steep stairs, not recommended for anyone who might struggle.

We rea;;y enjoyed our meal here, though I would recommend for dinner or lunch only.

“Dissapointing”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

After a day out on the Vaal river, we were starving so we had high expectations for the quaint well appointed restaurant, we had requested an outside table which we got, but unfortunately that was just about the last thing that went right.

An exciting menu delivered on a clip board, was very interesting but my mate and I opted for the Fillet steak which came in at top JHB prices, my wife had the Herb crusted Salmon, and the only winner was our friend who had the chicken pie which was yum. The fillet was slightly overcooked with a thick sauce which had loads of some form of thickner added, a herb crust: it should be bread crumbs fresh herbs egg to bind and then a crisp bake to finish not here, a finely chopped herb mush that tasted pretty bad, my wife couldnt finish the dish. My creme brulee melted in the sun, and had terrible texture, baked alaska was ok!

we wouldve complained if we saw the owner/manager or even the waiter, but we seldomlly saw either, the service was non exsistent and the owner didnt bother to even acknowledge us!

Plus side, good location, interesting menu, cool wine list, cons: bad bad service, pricey and well not very HOI POLLOI if you follow!

“What a pleasant surpise!”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

On a very hot summer's Thursday afternoon, returning from a 4-hour business meeting, my colleague and I were absolutely starving as our meeting lasted much longer than initially anticipated. Phoning in advance, we told the friendly voice about our predicament. Even though we were the only patrons, everything we ordered were available and excellently served in a timeous manner. Finely decored, exceptionally clean and very friendly service, we highly recommend this 5 star restaurant. Food absolutely tops. We are planning another trip to Parys with our wives just to re-live our memorable experience.
