La Serena
Reviewed March 9, 2009

La Serena is set in the beautiful Umbrian countryside, has a very quiet location, comfortable rooms and excellent food. If you prefer to eat out sometimes there is a very good restuarant in the local village. The English hosts are very knowledgable about the surrounding countryside and provide helpful advice to guests about what to see and how to get there. They will take you on an escorted tour if you prefer. Highly recommended.

Enough good things can't be said about this wonderful little gem of an Inn. And yet, even more is to be said for Stephanie and Derek's graciousness. They were able to provide us with a ride (for a very reasonable fee) from the train station as well as a few other rides to the wedding we were attending just up the road from La Serena. If you're coming from America and have never been to Europe, La Serena is the perfect introduction to the Italian countryside for many reasons - not the least of which being that the hosts, being from the UK, speak English.
Dinner, made by Derek was a real treat, that included lively conversation as well as copious amounts of wine from the vineyards you see from the windows of La Serena.
In short, I highly recommend staying at La Serena if your travels take you to the scenic rolling hills of Tuscany.

Our stay at La Serena was fantastic, Steph and Derek bent over backwards to ensure that we had a great time and that we had everything we needed. The accommodation is five star, beautifully furnished and has panoramic views of the surrounding countryside- the food was absolutely delicious, I was sad to leave. It is the perfect place to stay if you want to explore Umbria and is equally ideal if you want to relax and do nothing except soak up the sun and take in the breathtaking views. I will definitely be returning to La Serena.

We wanted a week's break to explore Umbria, and into Tuscany. La Serena is in a great central location to do that and it is a restful and welcoming place to stay.
Steph and Derek are very good hosts, with a wealth of maps and guides to help guests decide which direction to head in exploration.
The rooms are spacious with lovely views across the valley. The large swimming pool was undergoing commissioning while we were there and it will be a major asset by July 2008. Sitting around the pool on a hot day, with the valley view is pure magic.
Driving in Italy is a whole exercise in its own right but once you have learned what goes for normal driving there, it is fine.
High points were Cortona [twice!], Assisi, Perugia, Lake Trasimeno, Spina and just seeing the mass of poppies scattered everywhere around the beautiful countryside. We found parking never to be a problem. Taking our satnav was something we were glad we had done - most especially when returning our car to Fiumicino in Rome.
Dining for us was partly at La Serena where Derek is an excellent cook, but also at other places nearby. One ristorante we particularly liked was La Luna Nel Pozzo, at Case Nuove. This was recommended by Steph and Derek and we found ourselves there on three evenings - the fish and entrecote there were really good.... one doesn't want pasta and Umbrian country food every meal!
La Serena is a recommended place to stay!

Eight of us traveled to Umbria in October of 2007 and stayed at La Serena.

Derek and Stephany have put together a wonderful home away from home at La Serena. The rooms are charming and large with spectacular views of the Umbrian hills. Every room has a balcony. The food is spectacular and you are within easy driving distance of everything.

Derek and Stef catered to our every need. If we needed to leave at 7, breakfast was ready at 6. If we wanted to sleep in it was ready whenever we wanted it.

My mom and dad had just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and this was part of the celebration. When Derek and Stef found this out they prepared a gourmet Italian dinner for the 8 of us, finished off with an anniversary cake. It couldn't have been better.

My wife and I will be travelling back to central Italy in the future and La Serena is a central part of our plans.

I couldn't recommend it more. It was just wonderful.

As a permanent wheelchair user, I was apprehensive about our two week trip to Umbria in Italy. However, after reaching the guest house I found I could relax completely and start what became the best holiday we've ever had together.

The guest house is not only beautiful, with views of miles and miles of surrounding countryside, it is also exquisitely furnished and the suites are wonderful. The suite for disabled guests was easily accessible on the ground floor, as was the dining room and lounge, and the gardens. The doors were wide and accessible, and the bed well designed for wheelchair users as well as for non-disabled users. I haven't slept so well in years!

The bathroom was designed especially well for disabled users. A huge wheel-in shower, special sinks and a special shower wheelchair/commode for the well appointed toilet and bidet - which have strong bars well-placed - all made life very easy and comfortable.

Almost as important - the hosts themselves have an excellent knowledge of the area, and besides one of them being a superb chef of note in the area, they advise their guests on the best places to visit - which are accessible and which aren't for the disabled traveller.

The guest house is not specifically for disabled travellers however, but it is the perfect place from which to discover the delights and rich friendliness that surrounds La Serena and Umbria.

A word of warning however, the drivers in Italy are completely mad - as evidenced by the fact that almost every car has at least one dent. Oh, and a GPS system is almost mandatory to find your way through the winding roads and lanes of the exquisitely wonderful hilltop towns and villages.

Umbria was a unique experience, differing sharply even from its neighbour Tuscany, with different traditions, countryside and produce, and is two hours drive to the madhouse that is Rome, or the black sand beaches of the Med. We loved it all. But even more important to me, as a disabled traveller, La Serena served as a comfortable base from which I could enjoy it all, instead of spending my time worrying or in discomfort.

A huge thank you to our hosts!

We stayed at this wonderful B&B for three nights during our month long honeymoon in Italy (7/07) and loved it! Derek and Stephanie were so welcoming and helpful- couldn't have asked for better hosts! We asked for advice on what to see and do and they gave us great ideas for around the area [ so many cute towns- our favorites were Assisi (the Basilica of Saint Francis) and Deruta- where they make and paint beautiful pottery ]. We also arranged to go to a few wineries with them after an afternoon of cheese tasting at the house (Hosted by the knowledgable Derek). Stephanie's Italian is very good, so that made the excursion go so well- That day is one of most memorable from the entire trip! Also, Derek's breakfasts were great with lots of variety and on request, we had a fabulous homecooked meal one evening! We strongly recommend staying here if you're planning a trip to Umbria (we also hear that a swimming pool is set to be put in this upcoming Spring-another plus!)!
