Bougan Villa guest house was an incredible experience ! From the food, to the rooms, to the beautiful veranda.. it was all fantastic!
The hosts, Jim and Shirlene, were wonderful. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, and cooked the most delicious food! Easily the best we ate in Sri Lanka!
We initially wanted to be in Kandy but after visiting the city, we found that the Bougan Villa is situated in the perfect surrounding. Overall, we were 100% satisfied with our choice.

This delightful guest house is like a hidden paradise in the hills. The experience began as soon as we stepped out of the private shuttle bus with a warm, friendly greeting, a cup of tea and home made afternoon tea. The views of the surrounding paddy fields, the sound of the birds and the peace and tranquility encouraged us to dine in each night of our stay. Food was divine, conversation stimulating, hospitality perfect. We didn't want to leave!! Definitely recommended for those who want a relaxing time, not the nightlife.

We stayed two nights at Bougan Villa. It is a really beautiful house. The bedrooms are simple but have everything you need along with a huge bathroom. Life is spent on the terrace which is lovely at all times of the day.
The food was the best we ate in Sri Lanka (even better than Mount Lavinia) and Shirlene kindly made delicious curries to our taste. The service is impeccable, everything is served on china, with the right cutlery and crisp tablecoths.
The hosts really make it, Jim and Shirlene are a really nice couple. Interesting to chat to, ever helpful and great at making arrangements for our days out.
Kandy was overrated and I wouldn't want to visit again, but I would be tempted back at the thought of another couple of peaceful days at Bougan Villa.

We stayed at Bougan Villa in July this year for 5 nights as a base for visiting Kandy and other places of interest in the hill country. Our first view of the guest house was breathtaking, as were the views from the terrace and garden. We were given a very warm welcome by the owners, Jim and Shirlene, and immediately served with much needed refreshments. Our room and bathroom were spacious, elegant and comfortable with a high standard of fixtures and fittings. The best feature was the doors opening onto the verandah with our own seating area and views over the garden and adjacent paddy fields.
The first night we had dinner on the terrace, a four course meal cooked by Shirlene and it was so good we decided to eat there every night. It was a lovely start to our holiday in Sri Lanka. Jim and Shirlene were very attentive hosts, but also friendly and a mine of local information which gave us an insight into Sri Lankan life. We would recommend this guest house to anyone who enjoys good food and beautiful rural surroundings.

Friendly hosts and a lovely location with a vegetable garden and paddy fields around you, though the location is a bit too away from everything. Lovely morning with fantastic view of mountains.

Shirlene is a fantastic cook and Jim a great host, though some of us (like me) might feel bad having them fuss around you. You would understand when you are there :)

Be warned: this is not your normal homestay experience, price wise - but as long as you are fine with it, go ahead and enjoy the experience.

This guest house was a true gem to find. The owners, Jim and Shirlene were fantastic hosts and made our stay relaxing and special. We stayed in many other places but this was by far the best. it wasn't too expensive but was off the main road but well worth the effort to find. Our driver was also comfortable with his accomodation and meals. Everything was clean and beautiful and the gardnes and view magnificent. This is a must stay at place if you go to Kandy!

We booked for two nights and ended up very much regretting that we hadn't planned a longer stay.
The setting amongst the hills and paddy fields is beautiful and deeply relaxing - perfect after the bustle of Kandy, which is just half an hour's drive away. We loved simply reading or taking tea on the verandah overlooking the luxuriant garden and listening to the cicadas.
Our room on the ground floor was comfortable and well-designed, opening directly onto our own section of verandah complete with cosy wicker armchairs.
Shirlene and Jim are superlative and very caring hosts - more like being welcomed into the home of old friends. They have a chef who comes in specially to cook for the evening and he offers a good range of Sri Lankan, Fusion and Italian cuisine. We also thoroughly recommend Jim's scrambled eggs for breakfast!

We would love to return!
