“Family Friendly French Gite”
Reviewed August 29, 2017 for a stay in August 2017

Nice Gite in a good location for exploring the surrounding area and Ile de Oleron. Would recommend taking bikes as lots of tracks make it an easy way to get around. Lovely pool and easy for kids to make friends with children staying in the other Gites.

“Rustic cottages in a superb Location”
Reviewed August 10, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We travelled from Paris to St Just-Luzac to the Rochebonne cottages.
Very easy to find and what a lovely setting.
The cottages are quaint and rustic and grounds well maintained with a super pool. They are located next to the chateau and run with the same team.
The Details provided were everything they said it would be, rustic& charming. AN ideal base for spending time before going off and exploring the local areas and coastline.
The pool was safe, well maintained with a solar cover and very clean. There were parasols around the pool and loungers -although no cushions/mats for loungers which made them slightly uncomfortable.
We selected the option to have towels and linen for the week, which worked well. They were clean and fresh, although somewhat aged - would recommend taking your own pool/beach towels.
A full selection of crockery/glasses/pans/cutlery in the kitchen was great and with the cottage having a dishwasher meant we were never short of these items.
The details said there was no welcome pack, which was fine, however a couple of rolls of toilet paper/kitchen roll/dishcloths/washing up liquid/soap would have been helpful.

The local team who support the running of the cottages and chateau were lovely and would do everything they could to assist. It is evident that the team and owners do what they can to maintain the grounds and cottages to provide a very safe and comfortable base.
I think if I could make 2 suggestions, it would be that the cottages perhaps need a little modernizing/TLC inside in terms of décor and soft furnishings- sofas/seats/towels/bedding/showers. secondly, Wi-Fi is available but due to the thickness of the stone walls, it doesn't really work inside the cottage. I would recommend a router being placed inside the cottage directly.

All in all an excellent holiday rental and certainly somewhere I would highly recommend to friends and family. We would consider renting the chateau next time as a bigger group

Thank you so much for taking the time to write us a review. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I am sorry that you had a need to comment on the toilet roll kitchen roll and dish clothes etc, as these should have been provided so I will speak to the housekeepers as to why this didn't happen for you. Rest assured it normally does!
Look forward to welcoming you back one day.

“perfect french charm”
Reviewed July 5, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Great for a relaxing break in a quintessentially rural french gite. If you want to immerse yourself in France, look no further. If you want to complain about trivialities like a weak WiFi in chalet 7 or a few leaves in the pool go and stay in a hotel, this place has charm, history and everything we needed for a hands on experience of rural france. You will need a car to reach it but once you do you have a great area of the Charante to explore or just park the car and lie by the excellent pool all week. We loved sitting in our private garden each evening relaxing over a few glasses of local wine and just taking in the beauty of the chalets we had the pleasure of retiring to at the end of the night. Will return and highly recommend it.

“All about the money - would never return”

All about the money - Would never return
We had a very disappointing stay in one of the cottages – ‘La Mangeoire'. I’ve provided many positive reviews on Tripadvisor, and avoid making negative reviews. However, having deliberated for some time, in this instance I felt I had to make an exception. Nobody was present to meet us on our arrival. We were advised via a note at the gate to let ourselves in and that the keys were on the table. An information booklet was provided so we took to reading this cover to cover straight away. It was interesting to read some of the content - to ensure the return of the two keys at the end of our stay, describing it as in 'infernal nuisance’ when guests forget to return the keys.... It was not permitted to hang laundry out to dry on the clothes line on a Saturday as ,,,, other arriving guests do not wish to see your laundry....Please dispose of your rubbish and recyclables in the village and if you do not wish to do this, the cleaners(what cleaners?) will be happy to do so but ‘please leave a tip’, suggesting 5 or 10euro! We were not pleased to find that the duvets and pillows provided in each bedroom were grubby, one of the pillows actually having a blood stain on it. We wondered why protective covers were not used or when, if ever, the bedding had been replaced since the cottage was first let. Both bedrooms had two single beds. We brought our own bed linen, for a double bed. The owner had indicated in their prior correspondence that two beds could be pushed together, however we were not informed that this would mean that king-size bed linen would be required!..We brought standard double bed linen. I thought the beds in the 2nd room were narrower so we tried pulling them out from the walls to move them together. The amount of cobwebs between the beds and the walls was unbelievable. The floors throughout the cottage were unwashed, sticky underfoot in parts, and dusty in other parts. The bathroom was grubby. It had, at best been given a 'lick' by previous guests. There was no evidence of the cottage having been cleaned professionally. When using the gas cooker, the knobs at the front dangerously overheated. We were intrigued to read in the information booklet that the owners did not feel that appliances should be replaced if they are still useable, citing environmental considerations. This was in our view a feeble excuse. This type of problem is potentially dangerous and significantly more so if children are around.
A few hours after our arrival the owner called round seeking a breakages deposit of 150euro. We were not notified in advance that this would be required, and when I pointed this out, the owner simply said 'did you not read your email'. We received no notification of this in any correspondence prior to our arrival. The owner outlined why a deposit was necessary, stating they use it to 'reign them in'. When I advised I did not have that cash to hand, that I could have it the following day, the owner requested a copy of my passport. On the day of our departure which was a Thursday, we prepared to depart at the departure deadline of 10am (as stated in the info booklet). There was no sign of the owner. I contacted the owner's landline (no mobile was provided to us), no less than 6 times, only to receive a recorded message along the lines of 'this phone does not take messages'. After an hour, we called to a neighbour and explained that we were awaiting the return of our deposit and had to make a boat. They tried 3 times to contact the owner's mobile but to no avail. After 90 minutes we had no option but to depart. The owner finally contacted us some two hours later as we were on our journey and seemed to think it was amusing that they ‘forgot’ about our departure. The owner said they would post the money however we requested it be lodged directly to my bank account. Unbelievably, the owner elected to refund our deposit minus the bank charges they incurred to make the transfer. Despite multiple email correspondence with the owner and others to whom they passed our correspondence onto, our repeated demands for the remainder of our deposit were flatly refused. They accepted no responsibility for not being present at our departure, saying that it was clearly outlined in the visitor brochure that we were to complete a departure notification form to advise when we were leaving and as we had not done so, they could not possibly have known when we were departing. As owners of holiday let accommodation ourselves, we find it incredible that an owner of a holiday let does not keep track of their arrivals and departures. Needless to say, there was no form in the cottage information booklet. We were disgusted at the treatment we received from the owner and their derogatory email comments about us to a colleague, which was inadvertently included in subsequent email correspondence to us! (see photos).
Marennes and the surrounding area are fantastic, but this accommodation fell way short. The cottage was simply not clean, welcoming or comfortable so we were out and about as much as possible.
We are seasoned holiday-makers in France, have loved all previous accommodation, but would never recommend this property to our friends.

We take great pride in the popularity of our properties, which are cleaned top to bottom every week. All prices are net to the owner, including bank charges. We have a huge % of re-bookings. We are so sorry you were not happy and we hope you made a speedy recovery from your distress.

“Fantastic”
Reviewed June 25, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

WOW..

Got to be rated as one of our best holidays, A warm welcome from the moment of arrival to the time we departed. The cottages are owned and managed by an English couple, Author ( turquoisemoon.co.uk ) Catherine Broughton and her husband Bruce. Nothing is too much trouble during your stay.

Due to another holidaymaker wishing to extend there stay, we actually stayed in “La Cave” a delightfull 3 bedroom property, fully equipped with everything you could wish for especially if you have a large family. Each cottage has it’s own small front garden fully enclosed so it is safe for children and pets. We took our 3 small dogs with us on holiday and they enjoyed it as much as we did. (Please contact the owners first, to confirm availability to take your pets, a small premium is payable and understandable)

The cottages are set within walled grounds and a huge play area for children to run around and be safe. Also next to the play area is the swimming pool fenced in with double gate bolts at the entrance for safety.

Not too far away, a brisk walk in the morning are the local village shops, where you will find the bakery and Tabac (I can smell that fresh baked bread now). A short drive 2 Km and you will find another bakery/patisserie and pharmacy.

Whether you are a couple or family, within a radius of 40 Km there is so much see and do, Fortified village, Aquarium, Zoo, Restaurants, Walks and beach’s, shopping in the local market place, something for everyone.

My Wife and I have no hesitation about a return visit.
