Juffing Hotel & Spa
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Hinterthiersee
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 10, 2014

We have just returned from our fifth experience of Sonja's and Elmar's hospitality at the Juffing and it continues to excel on all counts. We first stayed there in 2006 (the first English couple i believe to do so) and have been returning regularly since. Although the hotel has expanded through the provision of a modern wing and more recently an outdoor pool connected to the spa facility, Sonja and her team continue to provide that personal touch which always makes you feel valued as a guest- friends of Juffing indeed!. It was our wedding anniversary whilst we were there and our breakfast table was decorated with flowers, hearts and fluffy pigs (!). We also got a personal present from Sonja- thank you so much.

Breakfasts are plentiful and wholesome and every evening there is a six course meal (extended to a seven course gala dinner on Thursdays!). In the afternoons tea, coffee cake and salads are available for guests to enjoy. There is more than enough food to satisfy even this hungry hiker's appetite!

The rooms in both older and modern wings of the hotel are spacious, spotlessly clean and comfortable -the feather filled duvets and pillows ensure a comfortable and rested night's sleep.

Words alone cannot describe Hinterthiersee as a haven of tranquility for a fabulous break. The facilities available at Juffing ensure that you don't have to move but just enjoy the surrounding views if that is your wish. if however like us you are a little more energetic then there is plenty of mountain and lakeside walking starting from the hotel which also has mountain bikes available for guests.

To our amazement there are still few (if any?) UK tourists visiting the area. Being close to the south German border it is understandable that the majority of guests from our experience appear to come from there but the hotel website is now in English and a few more English speaking travellers would i am sure be welcome. You won't be disappointed! We cannot recommend Juffing highly enough. We will keep going back -thank you Sonja and Elmar and see you next year!

David and Jackie Pamment xx

We just spent a wonderful winter weekend at this hotel. Very friendly owner and staff. The location is excellent for both winter and summer with hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, nice places for sledding and a small lake nearby. We stayed in one of the newer, modern suites with spectacular views and so much space - it was like an apartment with high quality materials throughout. Best features were the beautiful modern bathroom and walk-in closet. We were really impressed with the attention to detail - basket for sauna area, backpack and umbrella in the room, huge counter space in the bathroom, and automatic blinds, etc. The sauna area was amazing with a relaxation room "library" with well-selected books and lounge chairs, another room which had tablet pc's attached to the lounge chairs and a selection of teas. The fitness room was spacious with new equipment and nice views. The 5 course dinner and breakfast were both excellent - fantastic choices for vegetarians and gluten free options also available. It took some time for us to get our wine order - only came by the third course. Also at breakfast there were not enough glasses and cups and many people were waiting around for more, which took some time. However these are minor issues compared to how overall well they were organized.

Room Tip: Modern rooms in the new section of the hotel

We were warmly greeted by Sonja, the proprietor of the hotel. The first night we had to stay in a standard room because the one we requested was not available. However, despite being the sort of room you would have found in Austria 10+ years ago, it was immaculately clean with a large bathroom with heated floor and a lovely view. The rest of our stay was in the Clarissa suite. This is the sort of room that the more upmarket and less traditional Austrian hotels have, in a new purpose built extension. It was spacious and had good quality fittings and a walk in wardrobe! Even a view of the countryside from the bath.

The food is exceptional. The breakfast is good and fortunately there is not an extensive list of items cooked to order. I say this because my husband cannot resist eggs/omelette every day if its there! There is plenty of selection and you need to save room for lunch. We have stayed in hotels where lunch is offered but sometimes it can be a bit basic. The Juffing had a good salad course and a hot option with a fabulous selection of fresh cakes plus tea, coffee and soft drinks. If its a nice day you can enjoy on the terrace and if its raining or cold, then a fire is lit in the lounge and everyone gathers around the bar and eats in this area which is very cosy. Every single evening meal we ate was delicious. There was 3 choices of main (fish, meat, vegetarian) - the only disadvantage is that the menu is in German as the Juffing doesn't have a great deal of British visitors. However, if you don't know what something is, there is always somebody to help you. The cheese course is extensive as well but we tried not to over indulge. The waiting staff were so polite and caring. A further testimony to the hotel is that during our stay it was quite full, not just at weekends which tends to be the norm around this time of year, this gave the dining room a nice vibe.

My last comment about the staff is a tribute to Sonja Juffingler. She really cares about her guests enjoying every aspect of their stay and has a great deal of pride in the hotel and the local area. She is a genuinely modest lady who we nicknamed Mrs Incredible after the mom in the Pixar movie. She has her eye on everything that's going on and is incredibly hard working - how could her staff not follow suit when she sets such a great example?

E:bikes. We love them but the quality can be variable. The two that are available at the hotel are excellent and you know you've had a good ride but without feeling like you require a paramedic!

Wifi: one of our bugbears is that some hotels offer it in certain areas or expect you to pay )even much more expensive ones). Wifi was available everywhere in the hotel.

Spa: a good mix of facilities and comfortable seating areas. The pool area is very nice with quality poolside seating and a modern stainless steel pool. My only criticism is that the treatment rooms are not soundproofed well so when you are reading in one area you can hear somebody in conversation with their masseuse!

This is probably one of the only or most recent reviews from a British traveller - but come on you Brits, give the Juffing a try! You won't be disappointed.
