“Good choice of food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2013

I took a party of 12 French and Brits there recently. Unfortunately the main restaurant was closed because it was a Sunday, but the restaurant organised a long table in the bar, which was OK, although a bit cramped. We were on the a la carte menu which was typical French. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals which were not expensive. The service was OK. We've had a group in the restaurant a few years earlier, and it was fine. I understand that the locals rate this long-standing restaurant quite highly.

The hotel part of the operation was comfortable but not exceptional and it has no elevator. But the food was the best we had on this trip to France (13 days) eating at Michelin one star and Bib Gourmand restaurants and was quite inexpensive to boot. We didn't eat the pied do porc specialty but the fois gras du canard and the ris de veau were superb. Very highly recommended for its food.

The town is nothing special but is pleasant enough with a small chateau on a hill overlooking the town and a nice town square (where the hotel is located). It is where a youth spotted Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and spead the word resulting in their capture in nearby Varennes.

We ate the speciality of the town pigs trotters and it was not bad at all but i think that it is not everybody's taste.
The service was ok and the waitress really friendly.
We took the menu of 28€ with different choices of plates which was not expensive for the quality we got.

Hotel is very central, running back from the main road along a quiet side street with free parking. The room was on the back corner of the hotel, was the size I would expect, and had electric external window shutters. The decorations seemed to be very recent, as did the bathroom. The public/communal areas have old woodwork and furniture with the staircase as the main feature.
Being just off the autoroute the towns location is good to see the area. Half way between Verdun (city of peace) and Chalons (capital of Champagne) with plenty of places of interest eg Ste Menehould shrine, numerous WW1 sites, large forests and rivers.
The hotel has a restaurant but we dined in the Bistro/bar which faces the main road. The food was typically french bistro, perfectly good but not exceptional, and the wine was a reasonable price. I always try local dishes and the area speciality is pigs feet - had them twice before, one was awful and I left it, the other I forced down - so I ordered with some trepidation, but these trotters were surprisingly good.

Exactly what was needed, good room, good bathroom, note on the front door and key in the room as it was a late arrival. Breakfast was good too. Didn't stay long enough to 'taste' the atmosphere, as it was also a relatively early departure. A good stopover place.

Le Cheval Rouge is conveniently located in the middle of the town, with easily accessible parking. Both the restaurant and the accommodation are good value for money. The en-suite bathrooms have recently been remodeled to a high quality and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Dinner was good but one felt it could have been better. In particular little effort seemed to be put into the pigs trotters, the culinary speciality of the town. The staff were somewhat reserved in their attitude towards guests.
