“Expensive Buffet. Not up to standard”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

In total, i ate at this restaurant twice for buffet and many times for set lunches or dinner. For set lunch and dinner, i would recommend this place but for buffet, i felt that the quality drop tremendously and the price is still very expensive. Our last visit to this restaurant for buffet experience are poor where we are allocated at another extra room due to many patrons. So, we have to walk across the restaurant main entrance to get the food. So, expect the plates & service to be less than excellent due to limited staff manning the extra room.
As for the food - the choices were less for the money we paid, the quality of the food also drops and we were serve with sub-par food for most of the types, the foods were not refill fast especially popular food.
I tasted other restaurant and they have better quality than this.
So, will i be going again to this restaurant for buffet, nope.

“Quality Japanese buffet”
Reviewed December 31, 2013 via mobile

They will have buffet for Saturday and Sunday lunch, and Saturday night dinner. Rest of the time will be ala carte basis. I normally go for buffet lunch or dinner. Dinner buffet will be more expensive but seems like they only offer 2 addional dish compare to lunch buffet which is teppanyaki sliper lobster and fresh oyster. There is 5 section in this restaurant, sushi section (with Japanese chef making the sushi & shashimi live), teppanyaki, sukiyaki & tempura section(live cooking also), appetizer & noodle section, fried rice and grill section, and lastly is dessert section(located at Sake bar which is beside Sake bar)
I would recommend this restaurant for value for money Japanese buffet without compromising on food quality.

“Dissapointment. Drop in quality and service.”
Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

Took my mrs out for lunch at Kampachi, initially told her about tje wonderful experience and wide selection of mouthwatering food avaliable as I have been there 2 years ago.

However that was a distant memory compared to yesterdays horrible experience. The selection of sashimi was normal, no changes. Still fresh salmon and tuna. Sweet and juicy goodness. For that, I would strongly recomend raw food lovers to dig in.

The tepanyaki and cooked food selection on the other hand was seriously horrible. The grilled mushrooms were juicy in the wrong way, the dish was overly marinated in sweet tepanyaki sauce. The tepanyaki fish was ozzing with a strange oily substance which tasted horrible. Adding to the disappointment is the variety of cooked dishes which was either bland or overly salty in comparison to some of the japanese cuisines avaliable in Penang. I am live salmon fish head but the one I had there was excruciating salty; had to drink a few cups of tea to clear the taste of the salt.

Service was was pretty slow as the waiters were not observant to the needs of the customers as uli practically need to call for the waiters each time I needed a refill of the tea.

“Best of the best!!”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

One of my faved restaurants since few years back. The best Japanese restaurants ever and everything is fresh. They even have a Japanese chef back then but not so sure now as don't see him anymore. Sashimi and temaki are even prepared then and there! They have small sections divided into teppanyaki and sushi & sashimi. Oysters are big but very fresh! Definitely worth every penny that you paid for! For weekend dinner, do call ahead for reservations!

“Good Selection of Japanese Food”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

Just went to this Japanese restaurant (Kampachi 勘八) to have some bites into 日本料理。Fundamentally, there were quite some choices of food to choose from. The various すし,剌身,燒き物,お粥 and desserts such as 和菓子 are there for you to really enjoy. For the price of RM105.50 (approx. USD35) per pax, it was really nothing much to complain about the food quality, quanity, the ambience and the service. If you are yearning for some good Japanese food, and you are in Penang, I would recommend you to go to Kampachi Hotel Equitorial. Only one shortfall about this outlet was the not so efficient ventilation when food was being fried, the smoke and vapourised cooking oil floating in the air was quite unpleasant. I hope the hotel management could improve on this.
