“A great place to stay and eat”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

This visit was every bit as good as I remember my last stay here in 2003. We stayed in a superior room in Birchwood House across the road from the main building. I've not seen the standard rooms but would recommend splurging and upgrading to a superior room. Luxurious bathroom with free-standing bath and shower. The bed was extremely comfortable too. There was complimentary sherry and biscuits and also a teapot and cafetiere in the room. These little extras made all the difference.
We ate in the brasserie and found the service, food and ambience to be excellent. The cosy lounge / drawing room with open fire were very relaxing both for an afternoon drink with the papers and equally after dinner with coffee.
Breakfast was just as enjoyable. Lots of choice and a freshly cooked Yorkshire breakfast sets you up for the day.
A stay includes entry to Ripley Castle and gardens just a short walk from the Boars Head.
We will definitely be back but will be sure not to leave it another 10 years this time!

Room Tip: My recommendation is pay a little more and choose a Superior room.

We spent last night at this lovely hotel. We were very happy with our room (The Cathedral Room). It was well equipped and had a pleasing view over the cobbled Square.

Dinner in the Bistro was delicious - bruschetta to share as a starter followed by Guinea Fowl for my wife and sirloin steak for me - unfortunately, we were too full for a pud!

Breakfast was also excellent - such choice.

The staff were most efficient and also very friendly. A special "Thank you" to Carla.

Included in the b & b rate was entry to Ripley Castle and Gardens - both magnificent.

We will definately return.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the main house.

A lovely review, Many thanks.
I am delighted to read that you enjoyed your recent stay.(I recognise you from your photo on the review above)
Isn't it strange how the people that have a real old moan never put their photo on the website for all to see??
Anyway, I will make sure that Carla gets a special mention in dispatches, and the rest of the team are made aware of your kind comments.
We look forward to your next visit and maybe there will be room for a yummy pud next time....
Kindest regards
Steve & The Team.

My friend and I stopped for a quick light lunch. Despite it being only 13.30ish there was a clear reluctance to take a food order. The non English staff were very friendly helpful and polite and the English ones would do well to learn from them. Our sandwiches came in raffia baskets which looked like they'd help towels from the bathroom in a previous existence. The perpendicular sides made eating out of them difficult and detracted from the food itself. Quality variable as one was missing its advertised potato side salad and grease proof paper protecting the basket. Please let us have plates - they're easier for the waiting staff to carry, easier to clean and easier to eat from!

A plea for the preservation of choice !!
Thanks for your comments.
I am staggered to read your comment about the reluctance to take an order, as we have recently changed from what we call summer hours , taking food orders until 2.30 pm , onto winter hours , taking food orders until 2pm. I can only suggest that the time was being checked before taking the order as I have never know a reluctance to take orders at this time of the day.

For your information, our baskets have not experienced a "former life" and they have most definitely not been pinched from our housekeeping dept leaving them nothing in which to put the towels!!
The vast majority of feedback about the baskets has been very positive , but anyone wishing to enjoy their sandwich on a plate only has to ask for that and it will be dealt with by a happy smiling member of the team , whatever their nationality !!!

Steve & The Team :)

Excellent location right in the cobbled village square and next door to Ripley Castle. The staff were very helpful and our room was in the converted stables in the garden. The large car park was behind the garden and easily reachable from the groundfloor room. Wifi free in rooms. Breakfast was very good as was the dinner. We were very lucky to also enjoy the life-size mannequins which the locals create each year and dot them around the village at the end of August and attract visitors for that week. Delightful.
Just along from the hotel (2 minutes level stroll) is the lovely Ripley Castle which, with its grounds and gardens, are all included in the hotel's overnight tariff. The hotel is part of the Great Inns of Britain and is a great stay for a touch of real England.

Room Tip: If you are in the garden rooms then try for the ground floor to save carrying cases upstairs.

We recently stayed at the Boar`s Head On the first night we sat in the dining room for nearly an hour waiting for our meal which was not the best of steaks and the tomato was dry in fairness our meals on the second night were first class ,for the prices charged there is some tlc required to the rooms and bar area .fail to see why the room we had is described as" Superior " and at £149.00 per night not good value for money .

Lovely, small hotel in a stunning location. Friendly staff, good food both in the pub and the restaurant and so much variety on your doorstep - from the beautiful Dales to the swanky shops of Harrogate. Great place for a quiet night away and a very reasonably priced room included a perfect breakfast. Will stay again soon.

Stayed in Sep 2013 for a wedding at Ripley Castle. Excellent rooms and breakfast. We were travelling with 18 month twins and the very friendly receptionist Elizabeta did everything she could to help us manage with the attendant logistics and stresses. Very impressed
