“Almost but not quite”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

First things firs't The Boars Head is an attractive hotel located in a nice little village with easy access to both Ripon and Harrogate.
The public rooms are comfortable and cosy especially with the open fires blazing while the snow was falling outside. They are filled with comfortable sofas, some antique furniture and paintings. My bedroom, although classed as a small double, was more than big enough with a reasonable sized bathroom. A plus point was the ample supply of tea and coffee plus 2 bags of ground coffe such a treat in these days.
Having said all that the hotels biggest asset is the staff. From the moment you enter till the time you leave they are friendly helpful and professional.
The breakfasts are well cooked and presented.
Free wifi is offered which is another plus point
The only downside for me was the noise both externally and internally. For such a small village Ripley is very well served by buses. While that is great for the villagers it is not so great for guests especially when their room is directly opposite the bus stop. The rooms have no secondary glazing so between 06.30 and 22.30 be prepared for noise. Internally the noise comes from inconsiderate guests who don't appreciate some people may actually want to be asleep at 01.00hrs and the poor fitting of doors which let a lot of noise filter into the room.
Water pressure for the shower was very low.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the courtyard may be quieter than those overlooking the bus stop.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review.
I am sorry that you did not have a peaceful nights sleep when you stayed with us recently.
I do hope that you will stay with us again and when you do ,please ask for one of the courtyard rooms or one of the Birchwood House rooms which will all ensure a qiuet night and hopefully a much more restful stay with us. We look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future.
Regards
Steve & The Team.

the service was disappointing. We stayed there for a wedding in December and had booked a superior room. The room was lovely, and so was the main buidling where the bar and restaurant are located. Very traditionally english, beautiful christmas decorations, open fire etc. From that point of view it was perfect and I would definately recommend this place to stay. However the service (except for the receptionist she was lovely) was quite shocking. First of all one would assume that this was not the first wedding they were "hosting" so one would think that they are prepared for a full house. We stayed 2 nights, and each morning we waited more than 45 minutes for our breakfast? Both times we ordered tea, and they served us hot water without the tea bag. We asked for extra toast another 15 minutes wait. It was incredible. Also we had dinner there the night before the wedding. The place is not cheap therefore I expect to be served also my glass of wine, but no you have to get up walk to the bar and get your drinks yourself. Sorry Boar's Head but this was really a let down!

I am very sorry to read that you did not enjoy all aspects of your recent stay with us.
The tea / hot water issue completely puzzles me and the fact that it happened twice is quite bizarre and your toast stuck in a time warp!!!
We most certainly are used to catering for a full house as you put it, with over 100 weddings a year.
I am sorry that you were not offered drinks before having to fetch them yourself from the bar.
I do hope that we will get the chance to redeem ourselves ,and prove to you that we really can do the things that obviously let us down slightly on your last visit.
Regards
Steve & The Team.

The Boar's Head Hotel in Ripley is my favourite in all of the UK. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and well equipped with the usuals including free Wifi and the most comfortable beds I have ever experienced a frequent business world traveller.

The staff are welcoming and highly professional - yet down to earth and very friendly in a natural way.

The food, what else can I say, but Superb - the highest quality!! The ales, whiskeys, and wine selections are great! All at a very reasonable price - great value.

All of this is wrapped in only a quiet and beautiful scenic location, but a rich history especially because of its connection to Ripley Castle. The Castle's gardens are a peaceful place for walkers who just want to escape into nature.

I recommend The Boar's Head to everyone who desires to experience quality at the best value for money.

We stayed here over Christmas, as the in-laws guest room was already taken by the other sibling and her partner.

In truth, it was the perfect get away for us from the hectic family Christmas. We were able to get away when we needed to and escape to the calm serenity of The Boar's Head. It also meant we didn't get roped into peeling potatoes and preparing the sprouts for Christmas dinner - we simply ordered a taxi and turned up to eat. Marvellous!

We were in the Yellow Room, which was cosy with a superbly comfortable and generously-sized bed. We loved the antique furniture - it really suited the atmosphere of the place.

Breakfasts were wonderful, with staff only too willing to accommodate my off-piste requests for a bacon sarnie. All staff we encountered were friendly, welcoming and very helpful.

We had a terrific lunch in the bar upon arrival on Christmas Eve, all very reasonably priced.

I loved the Ingilby ancestors staring down on one from the landing, especially the enormous chap on the stair landing. It is worth staying at the Boar's Head just for the portraiture alone.

Stay here for a restful and welcoming retreat and enjoy the Ingilby hospitality, and all Ripley has to offer.

Room Tip: I don't think there are any duds. It's a quiet, rural hotel.

Many thanks for taking the time to post a review.
I am delighted to read that you had such a great time.
Please don't leave it too long before you visit again.
Even if the spare bedroom is free, I think you should let us pamper you, it sounds like a much better option.

Kind regards

After our last visit I described the Boars Head as Almost Faultless, so we were expecting a similar enjoyable experience this time. Perhaps it was due to being between Christmas and New Year, or maybe it was because there was a "private function" that afternoon, and a wedding the folllowing day, but the cracks were starting to show. No log fire in the lounge, which proved to be an uncomfortable place to sit in the early evening with staff rushing through from the kitchen to the bar/bistro and back. Service in the dreary brasserie /restaurant was not very inspiring. When the head waiter was asked if the sea bass (on the menu under From the North Sea, Scottish Waters or Yorkshire Rivers section) was farmed or wild, he said he didn't know anything about it, other than it was from the North Sea. What really, the North Sea??? Anyway it didn't matter as the last one had just been sold. Starters were good, though the head waiter seemed a little surprised that I had enjoyed the pigeon as he said it was often tough. Main courses not wonderful, the smoked haddock complete with bones, acidic, underseasoned chive mashed potato, and a strange mustard vinagrette was a pale shadow of the dish my wife had enjoyed so much last time. The Ripley Stroganoff with wild mushrooms seemed to consist mainly of tinned mushrooms and the accompanying "one size fits all" microwaved vegetables went with neither dish. Asking for a few minutes to decide if we wanted a dessert resulted in the kitchen door being firmly closed, with no more contact from the waiting staff. Although I accept that there were no other diners in the room and at the late hour of 8.30pm the staff in any restaurant must feel the need to shut up shop, we did feel that the restaurant was being run for the convenience of the staff, not the enjoyment of the customers. Breakfast service was better, but if you are going to serve kedgeree made with smoked salmon rather than smoked haddock please tell the customer in advance! Maybe the chef was away during our visit, but the overall feeling we had of his restaurant was disappointment. On the plus side our room was, as last time, excellent. We visit this area reasonably often, and this experience of the Boars Head, totally unlike our last one, does not encourage us to return for another stay but time will tell!

We stayed 2 nights at this small country hotel situated in the idyllic village of Ripley in beautiful Nidderdale and convenient for visiting Harrogate, Fountains Abbey and Ripon. The hotel ticks all the right boxes for a relaxing break - cosy lounges, real fire, good food and real ale. Our bedroom was large, comfortable and nicely furnished. There is a bistro and a brasserie, (serving the same food). We tried them both and there was a different ambience - the bistro is more casual. Overall we thought that the food was very good and made with good quality ingredients. The staff were pleasant and professional.
