The brochure really doesn't lie when it says that Ashburnham Estate is 'heaven on earth'. I was lucky enough to stay there over a weekend in early July and my only regret was not being able to stay longer. The views from the bungalow are absolutely breathtaking and offered the perfect atmosphere for some much needed rest and relaxation. My friends and I were lucky enough to be given a tour of the tea estate and we greatly enjoyed swimming in Ashburnham's very own waterfall. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all fantastic with the highlight definitely being the feast of Sri Lankan rice and curry we had on our last night. Regis, the chef, cooks probably the best brinjal curry on the whole island. A special mention must go to Andy and Carrie, an extremely amiable English couple who look after the bungalow. They were very welcoming and regaled us all with their stories of travelling around Asia. There is so much to do on the estate itself and it is also within a comfortable distance of Kandy, Matale and the Knuckles range. I have stayed in a lot of places in Sri Lanka but this is definitely the best so far. If you want somewhere beautiful, tranquil and friendly to stay then this is where to go.

No doubt, every Englishman's house is his castle! David- the owner of this beautiful holiday bungalow is married to my Srilankan friend Indee.

We had the good fortune of spending the day at their estate over the weekend and what struck me first was how breathtakingly beautiful it is! Andy and Carrie, a lovely English couple who help take care of the bungalow, made us feel completely at home. It simply exudes class and comfort and yet effortlessly gives off an atmosphere of homeliness.

It is THE place to base yourself if you want a quiet, relaxing and perfect holiday! Can’t wait to go back!

If you're looking for a beautiful, peaceful place to stay, with the warmest welcome, delicious food, spectacular views and wonderful walks, then this is it. Carrie and Andy made us feel right at home, from the delicious afternoon tea when we arrived, to the loan of a hairdryer, use of their guidebooks, and the games of Rummikub with them at night. Our room was beautifully done with colourful local fabrics, and a romantically-draped mosquito net - they even let us borrow their insect repellent for the walk down to the waterfall (highly recommended, especially with the dogs who love to come and keep you company). We had to drag ourselves away, very reluctantly to continue our trip. We'd definitely return.

We stayed in some wonderful places in Sri Lanka and this was our favourite.

We were originally booked for a single night but ended up staying three. It's a bit of a windy road up from Matale, and if you have a driver it's worth making sure they call ahead for directions, but we had a lovely welcome when we arrived and it set the tone for a fantastic stay. Carrie and Andy couldn't do enough for us, and it was a real pleasure being their guests. They are extremely knowledgeable as well, and were able to help us out with ideas for the rest of our trip.

The estate, including the villa itself and the plantations around, is beautiful and secluded, with stunning views, and everything you could want from the tea country.

Even if you're staying elsewhere, it's also worth a day trip from Kandy - we recommended this to friends that followed us and they really enjoyed it. There is a great circuit to walk that takes you through the tea nurseries to an old tea factory and lake (the lake costs a few SLR to visit, Carrie and Andy can give all the details). It's so beautiful and peaceful, and takes you through villages of smiling faces and waving children. There's also the waterfall and plunge pools for a more relaxed few hours.

The views are breathtaking. It is amazingly tranquil, a fantastic setting. We drove up from Matale and our poor taxi driver got horribly lost and was very nervous on the narrow roads. The road from Kandy is easier. However, the views on the way up are amazing. Carrie and Andy are charming, interesting and excellent hosts. The first day we arrived we were the only people there. We were exhausted after a couple of nights camping in Wilpattu and a long journey. We got a lovely welcome, and had dinner on the terrace watching the sunset. We slept like logs. I did a huge bag of laundry for a very cheap price. The next morning we walked down to the waterfall and swam in the cool water with only the two of us there - and the wonderful dogs who accompanied us on our walk through the tea plantations. We had lots of swims in the pool (including sliding down the slide which I haven't done since I was 12!). In the afternoon we went on quite a long walk to visit the ladies picking the tea - very interesting and stunning scenery.

That evening wasn't as quiet as there were more people staying, but it was very friendly and informal. I wish we could have stayed longer to do some more walking. Two nights wasn't enough. It is a great place to chill after all the travelling around. There is Internet. I would have loved to just rest, walk and ponder.

The room was lovely and we had our own little terrace. The food was fine - not the best we had in Sri Lanka by any means but nice enough and tons of it.

Staying here was a thoroughly great experience and I have recommended it to my friends. It is a working tea plantation, not like some of the huge commercial places tourists get taken to. Really special. And we loved the dogs and the giant squirrel! Carrie was really helpful when we were booking by email, as it was our first trip to Sri Lanka (not our last).

We spent three nights at Ashburnham in late March and it turned out to be the highlight of our two week stay in Sri Lanka. Carrie and Andy were fantastic hosts. They provided some great recommendations for food and getting around which we followed (ask about the restaurant in Ella - superb!) and made our stay really comfortable. As we were the only guests at the time, they really went the extra effort to ensure we were looked after, which we appreciated. The location was stunning - eating outside on the verandah and looking at the sweeping views below was a delight. The room we stayed in had a balcony, perfect for our little 2 year old daughter to hang out on, was very clean and well presented. Even though it rained during our stay, there was still plenty to do. The short walk to the nearby waterfall was a treat. The pool (and slide) was great for a swim and we also did a cooking class with Regis, the chef. The food was definitely the highlight of our stay. Breakfast was al a carte, made to order with a large range of options. The dinners (we ordered curries) were easily the best we ate on our trip which is saying something because we ordered Sri Lankan curries everywhere we went! We were blown away with the variety of curries we were served different dishes each night, even the desserts were great. We couldn't get over how good the food was - seriously. Carrie made us scones one afternoon which was really sweet, she also made sure that our daughter's food was looked after and Andy was quick to help with fixing the flow on the shower when asked. He even offered to drive me to the waterfall one day when we were spent from trekking around! All in all, this place is highly recommended - thanks again for a great stay.

For us this place was everything we could have wished for to make a great holiday. The only downside was the 1 hour bumby road to Kandy. We had a spacious suite with private terras overlooking a beautiful garden. Great hiking options through the villages and on the esatate. Great food prepared any moment you like (perfect when you have kids). One afternoon we did a cooking class with Reggie, the chef, and after that we are even more appreciating his splendid curries. Other afternoons were filled with splashing in the pool, some board games in the living room and we even played some tennis. There was hardly any time and space in our tummies left for the complimentary high tea. Thanks Carrie and Andy and all your staff for making this a truly special holiday.
