We received a nice welcome from a young man (owners' son?) who did his best to cope with our inadequate French. The hotel dates from an age when rooms were small, as ours was, but it had been very nicely refurbished. The hotel sits at a point where it forces the main road through town into a single lane, so traffic noise in the morning was noticeable. As early risers, taking a 7am breakfast that they were happy to offer, this did not bother us.

The bathroom was of medium size, with liquid soap dispensers only, but stylishly refurbished.

The fixed price dinner was of exceptional qualitry for the price and the service (from Mum, son and daughter-in-law?) friendly, informative and relaxed. Breakfast was simple and served direct, rather than a buffet, with good quality ingredients and friendly service.

This stay was at the end of Day 15 of our 25 day trek through Les Vosges.
Previous night: Hotel Kastelberg in Andlau
Tomorrow night: Hotel Restaurant au Lion in Ribeauville

Room tip: If you are not an early riser ask for a room away from the main road.

This hotel ticked all the basics but lacked some of special touches which would make it a little French gem. The room was clean and well provided, although on the small side. The evening meal was good sound home-cooking and the breakfast was also good and plentiful. The proprietors were friendly, although there seemed at first some confusion about our booking which was quickly sorted out.

The bar underneath the hotel appeared to be closed; there was a small bar in the restaurant area. There was nowhere to sit outside.

Tired, weary and looking for a place to stay rather late in the day the Hotel Dontenville was a great find. The rooms are reasonably priced and, although smallish, a little tired but very nice. It is really nice to see real paintings on the walls rather than bad reproductions... Breakfast was excellent and the staff friendly and very nice and helpful. Highly recommended.
