We stayed at the banyan tree in Mahé for five nights at the end of our 17 night honeymoon in the Seychelles. While the hotel location, the villas, the beach and everything about it is quite spectacular, we were disappointed in many things.
First of all, on arrival the hotel had already pre-authorized ~4’000 euros on my credit card and according to the bank had never claimed the funds, according to the hotel it had not worked. Nevertheless, I was asked to make an additional prepayment of ~4’000 euros and an extra 1’500€ euros for incidentals so i now have 9’500€ blocked at the banyan tree for some reason and the reception was very un-understanding about this. Worse, when i asked if it had been solved at chec kout five days later the same lady who had checked us in had entirely forgotten about the inconvenience and I had to spend five minutes explaining it to her again before she could call the bank to find out when my funds would be released.
Next, there are a few lights that illuminate the terrace of the villa beautifully at night and one of them partially shines at an angle into the bedroom (curtains close 95%, but it’s quite a bright light). On the first night, someone was sent up to try and “solve the problem” and after spending 2 minutes pressing all the buttons I had already pressed he declared we would have to wait until the morning and call the engineering department. This was quite annoying, but it happens. We spent the day in the villa mostly and therefore were a bit surprised when no one had come to check on the lights around 4pm so we called again and had to reiterate the situation as no one had “called the engineering department”. A couple of hours later a maintenance was sent over to adjust the timer for the lights to go off at 11pm in the evening. This worked out fine and we slept great (fantastic bed by the way!). Unfortunately, the next day at 11:30 pm the lights were still on and we had the same scenario again (maintenance came to check, had no idea what to do, couldn’t solve the problem with the engineering department... by then it was quite funny, as if the hotel has a reset button on all the employees memories every night).
We tried to booked the court to play tennis on our second day and were only able to book it on the last day. Upon asking where I should pick up the rackets, I was told they would be on the court with balls to play and snacks and beverages and towels and all we had to do was walk there (our villa was very close). When we arrived at the court at the time of our booking, there were 2 rackets and 3 balls. No water. No snacks. No towels. After a few minutes of buggies going up and down on the path next to the field, we were asked if we wanted some water and subsequently brought two bottles.
One additional nuisance was waiting for a buggy to pick us up as the waiting time was highly variable (between 2 and 20 minutes) and the most detailed indication we were given was always “he will be right there”. Every ride we were very well greeted and a short discussion followed “how long are you staying” “where are you from” have you been to the beach” “where else have you stayed in the Seychelles”. This is a nice touch, but if they’re not going to remember we’ve already had that exact conversation, let’s just skip it...
Finally, on our last evening we were invited to a management cocktail (I believe they do this once a week to have a drink with the guests and collect feedback). We were greeted by many of the managers of the hotel and had a quick conversation with each of them. Our first conversation was with the hotel manager and we mentioned our disappointment about the above issues we had faced. Her reaction was entirely perfect: she apologized and thanked us for the feedback and promised to look into how they can improve on these things. She also asked for our villa number and where we planned to have dinner so that she could organize to “invite us” for that dinner. She then left to organize it, or so we thought. There was no further mention of this and we were billed for that dinner normally.
All in all, yes it’s paradise but that can be said about most of the Seychelles, yes the villas are beautiful and the breakfast is great! But service was really laughable, especially when comparing with the other places we had been to previously on the other islands. Considering it was our honeymoon and the high cost and announced standard of the hotel, no special touch or attention was given.

Went with my wife. My Mum was visiting London so took her along. BA has a direct non stop flight to Mahe, so a 80 year old can do this without too much stress, especially if flying Club. Booked a beachfront twin villa with pool for 7 nights late August.

First the good points.

1. Given the location quality of the property, the pricing was much better than the 4 Seasons or the Kempinski nearby.

2. The Anse Intendance beach front is simply breathtaking.

3. Rooms and general living areas are very spacious and the layout lovely. Pools attached to the villas are pretty large.

4. Beach access from the villas are easy with sun loungers laid out by your butler every morning.

5. Special mention for our butler Arvin, who was simply amazing, always on call and accessible but at the same time knew how to provide service discreetly.

6. Special mention for the Indian chef Nirmal Das who cooked up some very special off the menu Indian delicacies for us.

7. The Thai restaurant Saffron was really great when ordering from the a La Carte menu, will not however recommend the buffet which was just about OK.

8. The Arabic restaurant was nice but needs some more choices in their vegetarian options.

9. The main international restaurant had amazing views with multiple decks but the food and decor was unexceptional.

10. The Varangue bar is a must visit and has exceptional views.

11. the spa is beautiful and has very experienced therapists.

Now for areas of improvement as we saw it.

1.The property started in 2002 and is built in a beautiful Plantation style like some of the places you see in the Caribbean rather than the far-eastern thatch roof styles typical in the Indian Ocean. It was recently sold to a Middle Eastern investor.

2.What is evident is that the place needs significant investment and updating. With a location like this, they should be able to compete with nearby 4 Seasons but the whole place needs a facelift.

3.The furniture in the restaurants, interior decoration, wall art, the landscaping and gardening work and the villas themselves need to be brought into 2020s from the early 1990s where they are stuck. Currently they donot look like the props you would see in a high end resort.

4.Also needs watersports. There is no dive center. This is absolutely a must. Although Anse Intendance itself may not be suitable for snorkelling and diving, arrangements must be made to take guests away by boats to more tranquil locations nearby for diving and snorkelling. The beach itself could be great for surfing. But did not see anyone trying it.

5. While the beach is simply stunning, with crystal clear water and soft sand, the currents are strong and the waves are strong. The younger folks who are strong should be able to enjoy it but if you are not a good swimmer or reasonably fit, enjoying the beach maybe a bit difficult.

The good news is that the property is nearly 120 acres of which my guess is only 20 acres is used. There is a lot more potential to change it, add a tennis court or two, improve the beach bar, remove the tiredness and freshen it up. They have the advantage of really good, friendly, happy staff and an outstanding location you cannot go wrong with.

Overall, a very relaxing 7 days.

Banyan Tree Seychelles is an amazing resort located on the pristine beach of Anse Intendance, a long white beach on the southern part of Mahe' island. The resort has beautiful facilities including an infinity pool, a tennis court, and a yoga pavilion. The beach-front villas are beautifully furnished and include private pools and Jacuzzi's. The resort is also home to a turtle rehabilitation centre which offers guests the rare opportunity to see and feed tortoises during their stay. Finally, the resort has several dining options which range from Creole (i.e. local) cuisine to Asian and Mediterranean food. The staff is extremely welcoming and helpful. Will definitely come back to Banyan Tree Seychelles in the future!

Luxury hotel in a very secluded area perfect for honeymooners. Didn’t really see anyone unless as the restaurant. I had dinner at the International restaurant it was over priced not worth it, the middle eastern was much better. Very expensive for what it is.
