“A beautiful Christmas in Ansouis.”
Reviewed May 16, 2017 for a stay in December 2016

We had 5 days for a quick getaway. We had time to relax in front of the fabulous fireplace, with a glass of wine, after cooking in the chefs kitchen. A day trip to Marseilles with one of the best Caprese salads on my life on the waterfront. Truffle hunting and the Christmas market in Ax and Lourmarin, everything so easy to get to. Just walks around the village and cooking Christmas dinner in that beautiful old home, made the trip worthwhile...

“It was so perfect not enough words to describe”
Reviewed October 14, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

The house is amazing. The amenities were top notch. It was warm while we were there and house had an efficient AC, which is not common in Europe. There is a beautiful rooftop terrace, a BBQ that we enjoyed a few nights, when we did not eat out. The kitchen was well appointed with anything you need. The owner called to check to make sure we were satisfied. Everything was PERFECT. Also, the location is convenient for many destinations. Thanks for a great stay! We'll see you again in 2017. I would come back tomorrow if my schedule allowed. Again, a GREAT STAY.

thank you so much for your review.

We hope you'll be back again this year, and by the way, we installed top notch AC up on the top floor in each bedroom.
It's not American style HVAC, but it's pretty darn great!

Have a great summer and we'll see you and your family again in the autumn.

“RENTER BEWARE!”
Reviewed July 14, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

RENTER BEWARE! The description of the Ansouis "Slow Provence" house is VERY misleading. Overpriced for what you get, this house is NOT suitable for multiple travelers during the summer months.

Take note of the "Rule Book" you will receive from the proprietor prior to arrival discussing the unyielding do's, don'ts and various "chores" you are expected to do as a paying guest! The proprietor emphasizes over and over in the "Rule Book" that the house is NOT a hotel. This is indeed the case and one of the few accurate statements in her description of the Ansouis house.

Upon arrival we were greeted by a cold and uncharming female, who you are told upfront by the proprietor, is not to be considered your "personal concierge". That is after we were hounded by several phone calls from her during the day of arrival to see if we could accomodate an earlier check-in time due to it being a busy Saturday for our cold and uncharming "greeter". To say that this person was clearly offended by the fact that we were unable to manipulate our arrival time to suit her needs is putting things mildly.

Upon entering the shutter and window sealed dwelling on Saturday afternoon, (as if we had arrived unexpectedly!) we were overwhelmed by the suffocating heat and stale air inside the house. "We have air conditioning systems on each floor of the house, " reads the description. When we asked about the designated air conditioning unit for each floor as noted in the house description, we were pointed to a $59-$99 Euro plug-in "air blower" which showed a luke warm temperature setting of 24 degrees celcius. (We discovered the price of the "air blower" only after visiting the Super "U" store in the nearby town of Pertuis. You would think that considering the price paid to rent this house, that the proprietor could afford the expense of purchasing few more units to make the house comfortable!)

Of the two hot "air blowers" posing as A/C units, the one on the second floor is located in the anti-room of the Master Bedroom. Contrary to its location, it serves absolutely NO use to either the Master Bedroom nor the two other bedrooms located on that level. As for the unit located on the third floor, it too serves no cooling purpose for any room on that level. And don't think for a minute that you can adjust any device pertaining to termperature control in any room. All were programmed to suit what the proprietor determined to be an adequate temperature for the paying guests.

Each bedroom did have its own fan(s) so that the flow of hot air could continue to circulate while you sweat through the restless night. Please note that the third floor is truly uninhabitable during the summer. The brilliantly located skylight allows for the sun to beam in directly all day long, while temperatures soar to well over what any human being can tolerate at any point of the day or night. And also make note that the toilet and shower for the third floor are separated (2 rooms) and located directly off the statircase. You are safe to access these amenties so long as you remember to use careful foot placment upon exiting or you may find yourself tumbling down the tile staircase. We suggest that the stairwell light be left on during the night in order to avoid this deathtrap.

"Upstairs there is a Large Roof terrace with outdoor dining and BBQ, and mini prep kitchen," reads the description. NOT quite. The Large Roof terrace is inhabited by various stray cats from the village and large birds swoop in/out to see which new guest might be invading their roosting area. The mini-prep kitchen is nothing more than a utility room with dirty mops and cleaning supplies.

"Tucked in just off the living room is a spectacular 3 story open atrium," reads the description. NOT quite once again. This area located off of the main room on the ground floor is a tall walled structure with access to the garage and ZERO air flow. We found the best use of this area was for instantly drying your freshly washed clothing. The trapped air heated by the sun dried our clothes in less than 20 minutes!

Wifi and television/cable were adequate except for during the village power outages which you are made aware of in the proprietor's "Rule Book". Luckily we encountered just one power outage during our stay. And the clothes washer was a true blessing! At least we were able to wash our sweat drenched pajamas each day from the sleepless night before.

Plan to buy your own toilet paper or any other household item that might run-out during your stay. The village store is just a few steps away! And if you plan to use the kitchen to cook, be certain to check the expiration dates of all pantry ingredients. We found ingredients with expiration dates of 2010 and a nice rancid bottle of Tabasco in the cupboard. Clearly, the pantry has not been culled though in years! And as for making a quick cup of tea in the electric kettle - good luck. The kettle and its water filter are coated with a nice white powdery mineral residue and the outside of the kettle has not seen even a sponge wiping since the day it came out of the box. Pots and pans have the same nice white mineral deposit. Cook at your own risk.

Also feel free to inquire about the functionality of the A/C unit on the main floor upon your arrival. It was broken when we arrived. Our lovely "greeter" gave us instructions to empty the pot of water placed under the unit every 2-3 hours round the clock until a repair man could be contacted to fix the unit. The repair man finally arrived two days later to find us leaving for the day. To add insult to injury, he was annoyed and baffled that we would not give him unsupervised access to the house containing all of our belongings as we were leaving. We told him to contact the proprietor and we left for the day. What proprietor expects their paying guests to set their alarms at 2-3 hour intervals 24/7 to empty a pot of water draining from a broken A/C unit and then leave it up to her paying guests to handle the repair man during their vacation time? RENTER BEWARE!

After 17 years of renting our home, with hundreds of very happy clients, it was bound to happen that we would have a week where situations seemingly went awry and we’d get a ‘bad review’.
We clearly have teachable moments to learn from here, as well as clearing up misunderstandings, misstatements and making things right for all parties involved and for future guests.

I have shared the review with the individuals referred to; our new greeter and our long time construction/repair manager – albeit their version of the events may reflect differing accounts of what has been portrayed.
Even though everyone spoke English -- nuances and an attempt at humor clearly fell flat – that’s not okay.

It’s important for us to learn from this guests review and not rest on our laurels of 5 star reviews. What actions can we take to make our next guests have great experiences?

Moreover, with global warming and record heat during this visitors stay it’s time for us to upgrade our upstairs air conditioners (yes they really are air conditioners, and cost many times the price of a fan) to more powerful BTU’s.
We have made a decision to add additional insulation to our top floor roofing, replace the existing skylights with ones using reflective glass and blinds and install a large Fujitsu air con unit with 18,000 BTU’s. This large system, which we use on the ground floor of our home is extremely powerful.
It wasn’t broken as reported and was on full force during the stay. The condensation tube was leaking and was remedied 2 days after this guest checked out. The team did want to repair the drip tube during the stay, but circumstances and misunderstandings prevented this from happening.

We never limit – never -- how cool you can set any of the air conditioners –please be assured of this. There is no way I can limit or lock in the cooling levels. Nor would I ever want to.

After this guest departed, I found that a heater fan was on in full force in the master bedroom suite, and that the air conditioner unit on the top floor had been moved so that it was uncoupled from it’s exhaust hose – so that hot air was pumping back into the rooms. I can only imagine that this would have compounded this guests’ discomfort. The unit has been re-attached and is working well.
Using a heater to cool down a room would only make things even hotter.

Hard Water Deposits: we do have hard water in Provence. We’ve bought a new kettle and I’ve purchased a supply of Lime-Away to bring back with me.
Our team is aware they must anti-calc the coffee makers and kettle more frequently.
We do use Finish Powerball Quantum dishwasher tabs which normally work really effectively on hard water spots. But the electric kettle can't go into the dishwasher, so the kettle is replaced.

And the same goes for the pantry – this is absolutely ‘my bad’ – guests often leave condiments – normally unopened with the intent of sharing with the next folks staying. While we absolutely throw out cereal, flour and other perishables all of the time., we will thoroughly check everything else left behind and if it even looks close to expiry, will toss it out. That’s a promise!

Lastly – I want to assure this guest and future ones that we have no birds nesting on our terrace – and that our neighbors cat occasionally will peer over the roof to see what we’re up to. With furnishings from Restoration Hardware and Maisons du Monde, we would be in a quite a mess on the terrace if it were as described.

So how do we make everything better? By continually improving our home, encouraging guests to let me personally know – in real time, if something has occurred that is inconvenient or upsetting and of course, working with our team to help them understand that cultural and language nuances can be misunderstood.

To this reviewer -- Please -- come stay with us again – at no charge!
Should you ever return to Provence, we’d love to have you back – at no rental cost whatsoever, to prove to you we can give you a week in our home that exceeds your expectations! For us it’s a matter of pride to deliver a wonderful, amazing memory – not a nightmare.

In spring of 2017, I’ll be posting new photos of the upgrades and changes – and hope we earn your trust that this is really - a very special home.

“Amazing, amazing experience”

I've actually stayed here more than once. 4 times actually. I'm addicted to this property and to it's location "everything Provence". It's not everyday that you can rent an authentic, historical village house (village dates back to 985), and then by car get to 3-5 other villages everyday without beating yourself into the ground.

The house is AMAZING!. I cry whenever I leave it. It's magical actually. Barb, the owner (15 years) has taken meticulous care of it and had updated the kitchen and all the bathrooms to today's standards, but has left intact the ambience of "old and quaint and traditional French country home", nestled in the Luberon Valley. It's actually like being on a movie set. There is a HUGE fireplace. An inner courtyard with a large fountain (everything lights up at night) that used to be where the livestock were stored. Up on the 3rd floor is a wonderful outdoor terrace that over looks both the village to one side, and then the inner courtyard on the other side. You can have a lovely cocktail party here with easily enough room for a dozen. It offers a "summer kitchen adjacent to the terrace", so that's an easy thing to pull off.

The fireplace in the living-room is enormous. If it's "fireplace" season, it's also a magical way to wind down the day. With all the lighting and fireplace and candles lite at night, the place actually glows a beautiful soft golden light. It's an experience that I look forward to each time that I come.

Barb is a gourmet expert, so the kitchen is equipped with every known cookware and gadget known to mankind. You can literally do a different farmers market each day and then come home and cook amazing meals in the kitchen. The dining room table is very large so it's cozy for two or big enough to seat ten if you want to impress your friends with your French cooking skills from the ingredients you bought that day took cook "slow Provence".

I've been traveling the World for three decades and mostly rent a home when I can rather than book a hotel room. This is a special place in the Provence. You seriously won't want to leave!

“A beautiful time in a place in the center of one of the most beautiful village in France.”
Reviewed May 29, 2014 for a stay in November 2012

The experience of spending Thanksgiving with my partner and friends in the Luberon, could not have been better, especially staying at this stunning home lovingly renovated and maintained by the owner, Barb.

The village of Ansouis is stunning to say the least, and this place is so well located both in the village and area, it really felt like a home one could stay in for life. The comfortable furnishings, enormous French provencial fireplace, roof terrace and welcoming beds made it hard to leave the home itself for our daily excursions. We fully utilized the incredibly well equipped kitchen (there were more than one foodie in our group) and took advantage of the list of markets to go to everyday there and in the surrounding villages. Even the bathrooms are wonderful, and were hard to leave... : )

We walked to neighboring wineries and would explore by driving around the valley without maps, just to get lost in the experience of the Luberon knowing we would eventually be able to find our way and return to this welcoming place. Would I recommend this place to others? Well I have on more than one occasion, and they would easily outdo me with their praise. It is a true provincial experience, not touristy like many other homes and villages can be. It is authentic, beautifully maintained and French with all the conveniences I would want in a second home.

We plan to return in the next year and feel that there would be no better place to call our home away from home in Provence, the Luberon Valley and our favorite village in the south, Ansouis.

I absolutely loved this location. The house had all the amenities for a fantastic base in the amazing Luberon region of Provence. The beautiful new gourmet kitchen was very accommodating for either croissants and coffee in the morning or to create a lavish dinner from all the goodies purchased at the Regional open markets . The roof top deck was beautiful and comfortable and was the place we seemed to migrate everyday for a Rose Happy Hour and to sample the amazing variety of sausages and cheeses made locally. This was a great opportunity for all to discuss the days events. We were only four people but we thought of returning with a larger group of friends as the house had five bedrooms and 4.5 baths and could easily accommodate a bigger crew. The town itself is very unique and a quaint place with everything one could want within steps of the home . Cafe / bar across the street made a great cappuccino and the the French bakery just around the corner served warm Panne Chocolat and amazing breakfast quiche. (Note to Dads ..it is considered the mans job to pick up the bread every morning). There is also a Michelin rated restaurant less than a two minute walk away with an outdoor terrace looking out over the valley. We ate here twice and both meals I considered outstanding and would satisfy even the most discriminating of taste palettes. Ansouis was easy access to many of the great locations in Provence and the Luberon Region. We took day trips to Chateau Neuf du Pape, St Remy, St Tropez, Luberon, Aix en Provence,, L'isle-sur-la Sorgue ( which I would highly recommend to anyone staying here), and many others. I cannot express how much I enjoyed this house and all the charm it had to offer. It was a very comfortable home base of a vacation I will cherish forever. If you are looking for a scene, this is not your place. But if you can relate to the natural beauty of the Luberon Region, the quaintness of small Provincial towns, open country roads, fields of grape vines and Lavender, beautiful sunny days, amazing food and wine, daily markets in neighboring towns (featuring food, apparel, soaps and accessories) and a few hundred years of history mixed in.......... This could be the place your looking for .....certainly full of comfort, great memories, picturesque landscapes and great exploring.

Loved it......didn't want to leave......can't wait to go back.............
