Gamboa Rainforest Resort is located right on the side of Charges River where it discharge water to the Panama Canal. Charges river feeds water to the Panama Canal year round for the normal operation of ships rising or falling during their passage through different altitudes through the canal, without the massive water supply by this river, the canal cannot be operated.
I’m the first time of staying in this resort but is the second time of visiting. The first time was two years ago by joining a guided birding tour operated by the Canopy Tower, which I got a lot of opportunities to take good photos of birds and some other wild lives.
The resort lies in the rainforest which covers a very large area and lots of facilities within walking distance, you can enjoy by walking but the resort provides shuttle services at no extra charge . Namely the Marina where the boat of river cruise starts, the Tram tour, the Butterfly house, poison dart Frog house, Orchid house and the Sloth sanctuary where you can meet the adorable and cute Two toed and three toed Sloths within hand reach distance! I joined an all inclusive tour operated by Air Canada, a night Safari tour for visiting night animals and day time guided tour to the butterfly house, Sloth sanctuary and the Poison Dart frog house was included free of charge.
The resort set up is reasonable good, all the staffs are excellent, especially at the service counter, the excursion booth and the entrance staff called Angel, a very nice guy that gives you help wherever you ask, running in the rain and drive you to places you want . The famous Pipeline Road for bird watch and wild lives is within walking distance from the resort, though traveling by car is recommend as more walking is required once you reach that area as not to miss anything that stay on the tree, mostly birds, but we meet Sloth, Lesser Ant Eater, lizards and Iguana, White Face Monkeys and the Howler Monkeys that may frighten you.
It’s higly recommended to join the river cruise too, you will get unforgettable views on the Panama Canal where you see the Giant Hoist , powerful Tug boats, huge Cargo Ships, Tamarin Monkeys, White Face Monkeys, Howler Monkeys , Pyhone, Iguan and Lizards, Snail Kites and much more, most at reasonable distance that you don’t need very long and expensive camera system to take good photos.
For bird watching and photography it’s highly recommended to book a guided bird tour either by the resort or through the web site in advance before you go there, as they are of Hugh demand.
Right inside the resort, it’s a huge area that you can meet lots of birds like different species of hummingbirds near the slope that is adjacent to the resort buildings, Lesser Capybara and Agouti on the lawn area, Yellow Headed Caracara in the trees as well in the back of Capybara...and of course the Keel-billed Toucan!

We stayed here for 3 nights in a deal. We loved it. The massive pool was a hit with our kids (4&7), there was heaps of space to explore. The beds were very comfortable and the curtains super dark so we all slept well. There was enough choice for breakfast and we only ate one dinner there as we were out in the City, which was fine. We got Uber taxis no problem when we wanted to go out and got to see the sloths, frogs and butterflies. Not too sure what all the negative comments are about really. Maybe because we didn’t pay too much, we didn’t expect too much. But the staff were friendly, there were lots of people doing maintenance and for what we wanted and came for, we couldn’t moan. Had a very pleasant 3 days and would recommend it.

Had to wait about an hour for check in but no biggie, the Hotel upgraded us with an awesome family loft. Amazing view and my kids loved it. It had a hammock and two floors, the property is really nice and has an awesome Rain forest feel to it. My only advice is they should have more dining options at the resort.

Room Tip: family loft

My fiancé and I are very disappointed with this place. When we arrived we had to wait for 2hrs for our room. We walked around the resort and it is obvious that the resort is outdated and needs a deep cleaning! When we finally got to our room, the disappointment only continued. We booked a river view room however, there was no view of the river. The room is very spacious but again outdated with a broken lamp, a desk that’s falling a part, black mold in the shower and old furniture. Our room had a coffee maker but no coffee and a tissue holder with no tissue. When we talked to the front desk they said sorry we don’t provide that any more. The hotel advertised 3 restaurants. When we arrived, we were told that there is a bar and 1 restaurant open. We went to the restaurant and it was an overpriced buffet with mediocre food. I do not recommend this place to anyone and will not be coming back here. I would recommend staying in Panama City and getting transportation to do excursions in Gamboa.

The place stinks to mold and mildew. After the check in time we have to wait for 1 hour and 45 minutes for our room to be ready, only a simple "we are sorry" was offered, nothing extra for the waiting inconvenience.
Limited choice on snacks, beverages and drinks.
Been here before many years ago twice and everything seemed to have go down the toilet. Maintenance seems poor to none, few employees (and not well trained in customer service).
It is a real shame, not even in the hostal category.
Will never come back.
