We took the one day Jungle Land Panama Excursion and had a great time. Next time we would want to spend an overnight at his floating lodge on the lake. Only one caution: the seats on his boat had tar or a similar substance which I am guessing comes from people walking in new asphalt or oil, and stepping on the seats to get into the boat or perhaps it was oil from his engine. Whatever it was, it ruined our clothes.

Carl is a bit of a codger and that seems to throw some folks off. For us, it just made it a better adventure. This is a guy who moved to Panama and decided to build a floating lodge in the canal ... expect a personality!

I'm sure everyday is different, but if you get one like ours you'll see the canal, get a close look at large ships, see some of the expansion construction, encounter four kinds of monkeys, see some caimans, enjoy a beer in a hammock and have the chance to fish or paddle to a waterfall for a swim. Throw in lunch and transportation and it's a winner!

We felt it was a good value. There were other tours on Lake Gatun, but this was a better value and a unique experience. For those looking for additional savings: there was a group in our boat who arranged their own transportation and paid cash. Since they weren't utilizing the shuttle and had a large group Carl gave them a reduced rate.

Three couples in our early to mid-60s traveled from Northern California and Denver to experience Panama visiting a mutual friend who lives in Gamboa. Our host suggested JungleLand and it was one of the highlights of our visit. Absolute unique location and setting, fun fishing, great food, served by an enthusiastic and fun staff, animals in the wild, waterfall hike, late night campfire, clean and comfortable accommodations. And Captain Carl, clearly a character, added to the charm of an excellent over all experience. We enthusiastically recommend it!

Aspects of trip and ratings for them:
5 helpful crew on houseboat and variety of activities available (fishing w/ everything provided, kayaking, jumping off platform into lake, swimming, walk to waterfall)
5 scenery, safety concerns on water
4 wry, sometimes ribald commentary by Captain Carl
4 management of a large group by Captain and crew--but they were understaffed
4 information provided about service ships and transiting ships in lake
3 limited wildlife viewing: a few monkeys, sloth, turtle
3 adequate lunch
2 time getting boat launch site (pick up in Panama City scheduled for 8, arrival at dock at 10)
0 no toilet at launch site, 2 hours after scheduled Panama City pickup: "use the bushes"

Tip: If you have a car, it is probably better to drive to Gamboa than to be picked up at your hotel in Panama City

Normally the transfers from the city go smother, but at times if there is traffic, lost guests and other delays it can snow ball. I heve been discussing with the transportation company how we can improve this service.
When this happens they need to offer a restroom break before arriving at the lake. The Panama canal is in charge of the public landing. Not only will they not install restroom facitities they wont allow the tour operators to do so either. I guess they dont see the benifits of tourism for Panama.
The wildlife that we see on tour does vary. The animals are busy doing their own thing and dont seem to plan for our tour schedual. This is the reason we spend a couple hours touring in the boat looking for as many as we can.
That old Captain is human and has better days than others. Sometime members of the tour group dont make it easy. When you are a business owner you dont take as much time off as you should and you forget what it is like to be in vacation mode. Some people get my humor and some do not.
I have additional staff in training and on the way. My military training helps me manage larger groups. My new staff take a softer approach.

Our goal has always been to provide our guests with the best and most complete experience on lake Gatun.

Keep your head down and keep charging!

I have been an avid fisherman all of my life. Carl is a great host but his fishing falls way below expectations. Our guide could not keep the engine running so he paddled us along the shore where we had not chance to catch peacock bass. We caught an average of one fish per person after fishing the entire day. Never have I had such a disappointing experience.

I do want to appologize about you having engine problems. Anyone who owns an outboard motor knows that they can be probmatic at times. They can put a man on the moon but thay cant make a problem free outboard motor.
Fishing on lake Gatun is like fishing anywhere. There are good days and not such good days. With the Peacock bass you have to find them or they find you. Sometimes it is better in the morning and sometimes it is better in the afternoon. Bottom line about the Peacock fishing on the lake Gatun, it is not the Amazon. I respect the fact that there are serious fishermen and we do our best to accomandate them. The guests who have the best time are the ones who also appreciate the natural beauty of the area as well as the joy of fishing.
The motor is feeling better.

May we do better in the future!
