“Beautiful location, lovely hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2009

Peppers in Anchorage has a lovely feel to it - whilst some things are past their prime (e.g. bathrooms), everything is very clean and solid, with a sort of New England character. Even in rainy weather, it is a lovely place to be - overlooking the marina, you can have a walk along the boardwalk or the white sandy beach. For those with young kids, the playground is just outside. The rooms are good size (those on the ground floor are larger than those above it).
It is obvious that the hotel is run by a relatively small number of staff, so if you are used to prompt service of a 5-star hotel, you might need to adjust your expectations there. Having said that, you are there to relax and enjoy the area, this is definitely a good base.
One disappointment is the restaurant - Merretts - we had breakfast included and whilst the choice of food was pretty good, the quality of hot food was pretty sad - you would think that frying a bunch of eggs and bacon would not challenge a restaurant of that size, but the eggs were often almost solidified, hollandaise had no flavour.
We also went to Merretts for dinner and were not impressed either - the food, though seemed to have been prepared well, tasted as if it sat under the heat lamps for a while before it was brought to us. The waitress kept forgestting what we ordered, though it did not bother us. Would have been nice to have a higher quality of food - since they clearly charge the price of a fine dining restaurant.

Stayed for 2 nights over a weekend. No problem with an early check-in. Initial impression very favourable - hotel was quiet and very peaceful, at all times. Room was spacious but somehow seemed sparsely furnished - as if they ran out of money to finish it off properly or something - but with lovely views over the marina and across the bay from the tiny balcony. A nice touch is the guest lounges - each 'block' has one where you can relax in comfortable surroundings. The food we had in the bar (twice) was excellent but dinner in the restaurant on the saturday night was disappointing. All the staff are however excellent, ever friendly, well trained and helpful. There is no doubt this hotel is a cut above the average and why it attracts the clients it does and there isn't anything remotely like it nearby. So if you want to stay in quality accomodation in this area - this is it! It's in a fabulous location but without being able to put my finger on it, something still seems to be missing.

Room was lovely, big with modern furniture and a balcony overlooking gardens. Staff and service were excellent. Good position for marina and walks but a short drive away from restaurants and town centre, although quite near a shopping centre.
Breakfast was buffet with plenty of choice, evening meals were pricey though.

We stayed in Port Stephens (Corlette is the actual town) for two nights on our way from the Blue Mountains to Brisbane.

Peppers Anchorage was a very good choice and a lovely location. It appears that each room has a view - ours did - and a balcony or patio towards the water. The room was spacious and very comfortable.

The restaurant food was good quality and the bar also served food which was good. The hotel is a ways from other towns so it is nice to have the convenience of available dining at the hotel.

I am rating this excellent as we paid 160 US Dollars per night which was much less than Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

Read reviews & agree the restaurant is overpriced, poorly run service & very limited menu & over fussy meals. Check the bill as they charge extra meals which were not ordered as we wanted to leave as it took 1 hour for our meal!!! Breakfast however was good- can order own omelettes, eggs whatever + you can make your own decent coffee- cappuccino, expresso etc no american brew like other buffets. Rooms are ok nothing special. Position & view is lovely. Hotel is run very casually. Rooms not serviced by 3pm!! when been out all day. However, a relaxing place close to Sydney for a short break, but go into town to eat.

I booked just one night here for my wife and I. we had never been to Port Stephens and were exploring the area. The hotel was nice and staff friendly and rooms very spacous and clean, but in my opinion they were not finished off too well and something was missing. The whole complex is very nice and pool was great.
We visited the restaurant the evening we arrived the food and service were very good but way over priced for what we got. As was the whole stay really. If you have some money to burn and dont mind paying over the odds for what you get then Peppers is a safe bet. I dont know what the others are like nearby so cant really compare.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2009

We stayed here on the June Long Weekend in an Anchorage room. This was our first experience of a Peppers hotel. We thought that they were targeted at the boutique luxury market and hence didn't read trip advisor first...mistake! Location is great and as we drove up we thought it was going to be lovely. Plenty of expensive cars in the car park, which is usually a good sign. But...

Check in was very slow and quite rude - we were only acknowledged with a "you'll have to wait".

The room's location was nice enough with a large room with a pleasant view of the bay.

The room itself was very tired and poorly cleaned. We found long black hairs in the bath, handbasin, on top of the toilet and in the coffee mug, there were the chips from a previous guest scattered under the couch and on the floor. We called reception to ask for a clean room but were told the hotel was full. The duty manager came and cleaned the bathroom and removed the coffee cups for us. The carpet was vacuumed the next day.
She gave us a free bottle of wine and (with some prodding at check-out) a little of the room service too.

The bathroom is very tired with a dated beach feel. The toilet seat didnt' stay up, the bath was old and moved under your feet and we were constantly awaken by the plumbing of adjacent rooms (e.g. flushing toiltes) running through the wall at the bed head.

The curtain rod was falling off the wall, the plaster was coming off behind our bed(seemed to have been superglued back on) and the room was very dark with only 3 lamps lighting a large room.

Television reception was horrid. Lovely digital lcd tv, but analogue and foxtel tv reception was fuzzy. Fine in the bar, but barely watchable in our room.

Food was good. We had a cheese platter in our room, which was delivered promptly and dinner and a lunch at the captain's bar. The restaurant was aparently fully booked, but at 7.30 and 8 pm it was half empty.

Bar service was poor. We had to wait mid afternoon for 20 minutes for a bar-tender to arrive and then make us a very bad pina colada. There was no conceriege desk or information in the reception area about things to do, despite a full hotel and the long weekend. We didn't bother queing at the reception desk for assistance.

Give the day spa a miss. We booked without looking first, then realised that the day spa is right opposite the bar toilets, with a cramped reception so one of us had to sit on the floor. Not exactly a luxury experience. In fairness, the treatment room was ok as was the treatment.

Public areas need a face lift and some lights turned on. The carpark was so dark our car wasn't visible and you can't tell reception from accommodation when arriving at night.

Overall, great spot, but the resort has gone cheap and it shows. The experience we had was equivalent of a 3 star hotel only.
