“Very relaxing”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

Just arrived back in Sydney after a beautiful evening in the peppers anchorage hotel. Staff were very welcoming and explained where everything was.

The room service was just as good as the actual restaurant. Just remember to make a booking as it can be popular with the locals.

Will be back for sure.

This is an amazing property with so much to offer. We stayed in room 202 on the ground floor and had a lovely patio right next to the marina. Perfect for relaxing. The room itself was a nice size and we were comfortable, though the bed and pillows could use an update and we woke up with stiff necks and backs. Parking was almost an issue for us when we drove back to the resort after dinner on Sat night but luckily there was one spot left. Not sure what the car that drove in after us did.

After driving around the Port Stephens and Nelson Bay area, this is the place to stay if want to be close but not directly in the action.

What a location. The layout of this property is great. No high rise, only two levels. Rooms overlook the marina and are extremely well appointed and very comfortable. Staff are very friendly and no request is a bother. We'll be returning.

We've stayed at Peppers Retreats and Resorts throughout Queensland, New Zealand and New South Wales. We got married at Pepper's Convent, and ever since, we generally look to the Pepper's brand whenever we want a get away.

Pepper's Anchorage is good, but not great. We stayed in an Anchorage Room, which was pleasant enough. The location is wonderful on the Marina, with a very short walk to the beach. There are plenty of activities in the area: fishing, swimming, yachting, golf, and lots of family activities like 10 pin bowling, paintball, go carts and so on. There is heaps to do and a lot to recommend the locale.

With respect to Anchorage, first the good points: The staff were all very helpful and friendly and our meal at Merrits (?) Restauraunt was of a very high standard. For example, the staff saw we had booked a sunset cruise, and helpfully suggested several light meal alternatives for dinner on our return. This was very helpful advice and greatfully received.

The rooms are largely well appointed and generously sized. The venue seems to attract a lot of weddings, we saw two over the two nights we were at the Anchorage and they seemed very pleasant and well run.

But the Anchorage lets itself down in small ways which detract from the experience. I think a lot of them could be fixed with relatively small changes, and would make a big difference, enough to justify the addition of an extra dot in the overall rating. They are, in no particular order:
1) The mini bar fridges are exceptionally small, making it very difficult to store more than a half dozen bottles or so.
2) Only two bath towels are supplied in each room (with an extra two for the beach/pool). This is a bit on the stingy side, and if one misses a room service, you're stuck with a damp towel.
3) Our bathroom lacked that "wow" factor that we often see in Pepper's properties. While clean and functional, there's just something missing. I can't put my finger on it, but maybe its the lack of any wall hanging, or the fact that the aqua bath tiles and ochre floor tiles are a little dated, or maybe that there's no unifying theme... I'm not sure what it is, but an interior designer woould probably be able to sort it out without a wholesale refurb.
4) Water pressure from the shower is abysmal, but the tap to the bath has great pressure. I'm guessing someone's gone for the super stingy uber-water efficient shower heads. Think the episode of Seinfeld were Cramer is reduced to sourcing black market shower heads...
5) Some odd admin practices. We had drinks in the upstairs bar and only needed to tell the barman our room number. Had breakfast each day and just had to let them know the room number. Then we had dinner at Merrit's, and we got a call after we'd returned to our room and were getting ready for bed that we had to come back and "sign" for dinner, even though we were charging it to the room. Not sure why. But it seemed a little odd and very annoying.
6) The day after wedding number two, there were empty bottles and half finished drinks strewn around the grounds, which looked a little unsightly.
7) Look, it's a personal thing and people have different preferences, but the pillows were rubbish. Those super soft squishy things that mean two pillows gives you a kink in your neck, and one's not enough. Neither of us slept particularly well.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great property, and we had a lovely time, but some making some small changes would make it an exceptional property capable of delivering beautiful experiences.

We had a fantastic weekend...beautiful view from the balcony, didn't have any problems getting parked near our room. Lovely heated pool with plenty of sun beds to relax on, staff helpful and friendly. Room was nice and clean bathroom needed updateing but was clean, we was in room 407 away from the pool /restaurant area so nice and peaceful, watched the dolfins every afternoon a very relaxing weekend. Can't wait to go back! Can't comment on the restaurant as we didn't eat there, we did however have something from the all day menu in the bar which was lovely.

Peppers Anchorage is located away from the hustle and bustle and is a good place to be if you want to relax. The price however is a bit steep for the room quality and service. I have stayed at other Peppers resorts /hotels of equal price and the difference was very noticeable.

The rooms are poorly setup, the electrical and TV cabling was disgraceful, exposed wires and extension cables hanging from the roof with double adapters are what I would consider as untidy in a home and not acceptable for any hotel. The card readers on the doors were very annoying, upon staying there we booked 3 rooms and all 3 of the cards did not open the doors. After returning to the reception I was told we needed to be really quick when putting the door card in the reader, which to be honest took several times to get it right whenever returning to our rooms - the card readers seem like a very adhoc setup.

Dining at the restaurant was average, the food was delicious but the service was hit and miss, 3-4 different staff served us, each with varying personalities from acting like they would rather be somewhere else to absolutely fantastic. The service for breakfast was nonexistent, we had breakfast twice and both mornings you were left standing at the door wondering what to do and when we finally decided to seat ourselves both mornings, we were then asked sarcastically for our room numbers as if we had done something wrong.

Car parking was really bad, I was left with having to make a decision when wanting to leave the hotel of whether or not I wanted to risk losing my car park close to the room I was staying in. The hotel really should leave it up to other guests and their friends to do the right thing, maybe a security gate would solve this.

My favourite part of the hotel was the Captains lounge, the service was excellent and it was a relaxing place to spend the afternoons.

We have stayed here twice in the past 12 months and will return again.
Unfortunately it was raining during this stay, but it did not deter from our enjoyment of the whole experience.
Lovely location where you are within a minute's walk of the beach.
The staff were very pleasant and accommodating, especially Amanda on front desk.
We had a scrumptious buffet breakfast in the dining room. Although we were asked by Amanda and also received a call from Kate to ask if we were dining in the Restaurant for dinner, we had other plans for this stay. Still, it was pleasant to be asked!
The room was spacious, clean and had a view of the water.
We had an enjoyable short stay.
