Description: AKRO GIALI this name is indeed right for this tavern that abstains only 5 meters from the beach. It is the older tavern in the region of Kato Zakros, the building that was built in 1898 and had the name Maria. In 1991 Nikos Perakis and his wife, Tania, undertook the tavern and since then they offer with love and taste to their customers genuine traditional Cretan and Greek cuisine. They give big importance to the quality and to all the materials that they use, taking into consideration always the local production and chastity. The oil is from the olive trees of Nikos, the vegetables from the farmers of region as well as the meet from cattle-breeders of region.Kato ZakrosAs long as the fresh fish, it is daily provided by the captains Manolis, Giorgos and Kostas that is given to us straight from their caiques. In the summertime you can see celebrations for marriages and christenings or other feasts that take place with traditional live music and dance up to the morning. This way is given the possibility to the visitor to know the hospitality and the customs of our place. Here, next to the sea, you will find us ready to serve you from early in the morning to enjoy your breakfast or coffee and as the day rolls we serve you refreshments or fresh juice and for the older people a cold beer or ouzo with chosen titbits.Kato ZakrosWhile you are enjoying the crystal waters under the boiling hot helium we prepare for you the lunch as you wish escorted with abundant wine of your choice. In the afternoon you can enjoy your ice-cream while you enjoy the immense light of the blue sea and in the dinner the west of helium that is magic.

We only ate here once. The food was ok but a bit overpriced and we found the owner abrupt and not very welcoming (though other staff were friendly)
A lovely setting but not our favourite restaurant in Kato Zakros

after our hike down the dead gorge and a few hours walking around the Palace site, we settled on the first taverna on the path and lucked into a wonderful and declicious lunch fare at a very reasonable price. the view from the beach was fantastic and the lovely staff were gracious hosts, and the food was perfectly prepared and tasted outstanding. After our meal the waitress even called us a cab to take us back to our car in Zakros. If you come here, you simply must try the food at this taverna, you will not be sorry.

Coral room rate of €50 in May includes breakfast. That is coffe/tea, orange juice, bread, butter and marmalde. Not a lot compared with some other places. Drinks quite pricey too. There are cheaper places opposite.

On a daily trip to Kato Zakros , we stayed for dinner at Akrogiali . Few feet from the beach , very clean place . I realized that the BBQ orders were made on the fire that is produced from burning olive tree branches . The taste is magnificent . !! My husband had one of the best Mousaka , ever .

We were attracted to the Akrogiali by the wood burning oven that you pass driving to the archeological site. The menu isn't fancy but good standard Greek food made with good raw ingredients - we had tzadziki, Greek salad, moussaka and kebabs cooked in the wood oven, but I'm sure their fish would be good too. This isn't the finest meal available in Crete, but probably one of the cheapest (though fresh fish would push up the price).

Service was friendly and laid back - when you're this remote the pace of life is slower. Having driven from Agios Nikolaos it was a welcome relief to sit down and relax next to the sea - the tables couldn't be any closer unless they were on the beach! There were also other customers who just stopped for a drink (their freshly squeezed orange juice was delicious), or had finished their meal and were sitting watching their kids play on the beach.

The food is tasty, the location superb, and all for a very reasonable price.
