I do travel a lot and always enjoy visiting new places, although not tend to repeat my trips. In this case I´ve enjoyed so much staying over at Yiannis retreat and so looking forward to come back. Me and my husband had spent there 4 days and i would recommend this place for quiet and relaxing family trip or romantic couple get away. Yiannis and Katerina gave us a welcome basket with their own fruits, wine, olive oil etc. So apart from enjoying the quiet local and amazing views we were able to try local dishes and feel the greek hospitality.

I absolutely love this place, I have travelled all around Cete, staying at different apartments, but this has got to be the best, Katerina and Yiannis have made this retreat, a delightful place to relax in, with lots of stone built verandahs, seating areas, hammocks etc.and with sea views, this is a perfect place for a restful holiday, they have planned the place out with great imagination, the cottages themselves are stone built, compact and comfortable, with a kitchenette, and toilet/shower room, they are equipped with everything that you need, including delicious local produce, and some special treats that were a nice surprise, I really loved the cookies, that Katerina said her mother had made, I would love to have the recipe? it was also the cleanest place I've ever stayed in. I only wish I could have stayed longer, but I will be back, Thank you from Karen Kittelsen

It would be hard to fault Yiannis Retreat, for location, for quality of accommodation, for cleanliness and, above all, for the warmth of the hospitality extended by Yiannis, his wife Katerina and their lovely housekeeper Georgia.
Set about 10 minutes' stroll from the beach, the beautiful gardens afford some welcome shade in the heat of the day, and frame the view from the terrace outside each room down over olive groves to the sea. Our room was charming, traditionally furnished, with a modern shower room and a small but well equipped kitchen area. They provided a vey ample welcome pack of food which, to our surprise, was regularly topped up. We could also request any shopping for the following day, although it is only a quarter of an hour's drive up to Zakros to get supplies. We even came home some evenings to find home made cake, fruits and other unexpected delights!
Either Yiannis or Katerina were in the office every evening to help if required, but they are very discrete and don't overwhelm you - they are just there if you need them.
The little hamlet of Kato Zakros boasts five excellent tavernas, right on a lovely beach. Again, rather discrete and laid back as well as being extremely friendly.
We have been travelling to Greece for over 30 years and can only say it is overall the best place we have ever stayed. The only downside is the fairly long drive from Herakion airport - about 3 hours - but this does mean that the area is not too touristy.

Having booked this place on a dull and cold December day last year, I was a bit worried weather I could have been too easily lead by the lovely photoes on the website. So it was with a bit of anxiety my husband and I reached Kato Zakros after a long but beautiful journey along the south coast of Crete.

I needed not to have worried AT ALL. This little gem was for sure the highlight of our trip to Crete this year. Yiannis and his lovely wife Katarina couldn't do enough to make everything perfect. AND IT IS, at least if you love a beautiful landscape, flowers, cats, tranquility, a view to die for to the mountains and the sea - and everything greek at its best. The garden surrounding this place can only be described as sublime. We fell in love with it all on the spot and wished we could have stayed longer - we, two grown up people both had tears in our eyes when leaving. (please dont tell anybody as we felt really stupid). Will we come back??? Well I should think so.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

went here for 3 days originally as that's all we could get, but ended up staying 7 as someone didn't turn up. katerina and georgia were so lovely and helpful to us. it is a looong drive but when you round the bend and see kato zakros it is all worth it. there are some lovely tavernas all serving fresh good food.yiannis retreat is the most welcoming and relaxing place I have ever been to, I would still be there if my husband hadn't dragged me back to the real world! lovely rooms with everything thought of so you don't have to. little welcome basket which was great to tuck into after a long drive. the most beautiful gardens you could find with eating areas, hammocks, seats and a bbq area which we used twice. all this and peace and quiet and the sound of the wildlife and a family of cats, that adopt new people as they arrive! all those little touches make a big difference. don't change anything

Room Tip: all rooms are very special

Katerina and Yiannis are the most incredible hosts. The retreat is beautifully peaceful, everything is clean and conceived in order to welcome the guests and let them relax and enjoy the powerful beauty of Kato Zakros - which is per se an amazing place. we had an unforgettable stay!

Yiannis Retreat was everything we could have hoped for and more. After arriving, our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. Gorgeous views of the gardens and sea below. The rooms are like small one room cabins, rustic and really nice. They leave you a basket full of delicious breads, fruit, cookies and homemade baked goods for breakfast and a welcome bottle of wine. The place is very serene, quiet and close to the small town on the beach which offers a few restaurants. We hiked from there up into the mountains behind and took a gorgeous hike down the Zakros Gorge, ending up in Dead's Gorge, which was just a short walk back to the hotel. The location is in a remote part of eastern Crete, but offers beautiful views of the cliffs and sea on the windy roads that lead there. If you get a chance, we recommend you make your way out there and try to stay a while!
