“Excellent view”

Kato Zakros village is at the utmost east side of Crete. It lies at the end of a gorge that can be walked along in about two hours. We recomend that you should try to pass it.The seaside is wonderfull and there are some very nice tavernas just by the seashore. The hotel has magnificent views over the whole beach which can be reached in five minutes on foot from the hotel. The owner is helpful and the hotel is well organized. If you rent a car you can reach excellent nearby beaches such as the superb "Xirocambos"

I can only remember from this place the view from our balcony when I accidentaly woke up in the dawn. It was one of the best I have seen in my life - Apart from romance, the room was very good value for Money, the owner was more than helpful and the place is a great shelter to explore the area which is really the best on Crete, with no doubt, if you enjoy places that are not crowded.

I stayed here for 4 nights in October 2012 and was going to stay for two more but was shouted at by the owner George on the 4th night, when I asked him for some help with the TV. He was really aggressive and would not leave the room. He may come across as nice and up until that point had been, but he has a firey temper and I would obviously never go back. At first I was laughing, like he was joking, then I thought to myself - "Holy [--], this guy is actually seriously being horrible". That's when I asked him to leave and he still wouldn't walk out the door, he wasn't listening to what I was saying at all, just raving on. It must have been the end of the season syndrome.
This is the first bad review I have ever written about a place.
The mosquitoes were terrible, they must have already been in the room as I never left anything open. There were also two large spiders in the room which I took outside - they were browny-yellow, about 8 or 9 cm across.
It is a beautiful area but George adds nothing to it.

We just can't get enough! Thanks again, Giorgo and Charoula Platanaki for your great Hospitality! Clean, peaceful as always and everytime new Surprises, like a small oven (everybody can have it upon Request, they have totally two of them) and Internet this time. With this beautiful View to the Sea, to the Zakros Gorge and to the Minoan Palace you will enjoy to check your E-mails etc. And of course to taste the Fruits from the Garden, just ask Mr.Giorgo.
See you soon, my Friends!

Yours, Dimitrios and Georgia

We stayed at this location for just one night, still it was enough time to appreciate the excellent rooms and the owner's hospitality. Moreover, the rooms are very clean and equipped with frying pans etc. You will certainly enjoy the view from the hotel. I strongly recommend it !

Kato Zakros is a place I call home. The first time I have visited Kato Zakros was in 1974. Since then I have returned many times. I brought my family to live there twice for many months and every season. What drew me to Kato Zakros was not only its unique beauty but also the hospitality of the cretan people there. A few things have changed since my first visit in 1974 but nothing that I would look upon as essential. Ok, the amenities of civilization have been introduced since then, like electricity, telephone, a piped water supply, and an asphalt covered road. When I return to Kato Zakros I remember the days when we rented accommodation from a farmer, illuminated our rooms at night with kerosene lamps and a fire in the fireplace, hauled water from a nearby well, and cooked our food, which we were permitted to pick of the farmer’s land, on a propane gas stove. A Sheppard tending his flock nearby would sometimes pay us a visit with some cheese and milk, and a fisherman taking his catch early in the morning would also drop by with fish. So we passed a full year and more through all seasons, spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
Kato Zakros has not been a fully inhabited location in anybody’s memory . The archeological importance of the excavated Minoan palace has prevented development of a major tourist destination. Tour busses arrive and leave within a few hours, after the tourist have visited the ancient palace and eaten a meal in one of the beach front taverns. Very little accommodation is available for staying a few days.
For anyone wanting to stay, there is “Kato Zakros Palace Apartments”. The owners, George and Charoula are great friends of mine. George and I have known each other from the days of the kerosene lamp, the warming fire place, and the drawn well water. Recommending “Kato Zakros Palace Apartments”, I do not want to reiterate the positive accounts already provided by others. My wife and I have been to visit my old friends many times since and stayed at “Kato Zakros Apartments” well taken care of. What still matters to us are not the amenities of electricity and running water but the traditional hospitality. “Kato Zakros Apartments” is a labor of love from George and Charoula. It is not only about providing clean rooms with a fantastic view over the bay and the ancient Minoan palace. It is about making you feel home. The garden surrounding the apartments was cultivated for you. Visit Kato Zakros, especially during the low season (November to March). It is a quite season but with lots to do. Go there, stick around for some time, and help out with some garden work. At the end of the day you will all be together, eating from the garden’s delights and raising a glass filled with Raki to toast a good day passing into the night.

The Kato Zakros Apartments are about 5 minutes walk to the beach and about 10 to the five or six tavernas in the village. The nearest shop is a 15 minute drive away, so a car is virtually essential for self catering. There's not much to do this far east in Crete but this is the ideal holiday if what you are looking for is peace, relaxation and few other tourists. By September, when we visited it was very very quiet. The apartments are well managed by George, whose only fault is a little obsessiveness, but this can be seen as a good thing in terms of the care he takes of the property. A bonus in September was the free pick your own fruit - grapes, mellons and figs (don't eat too many figs, they don't make fig syrup for no reason).

Room Tip: All the rooms have stunning sea views.
