“Lovely Hotel, Recommended”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

Hotel was brilliant, I cant fault, the décor, food, reception service. This is one of the best hotels I have stayed in, the all inclusive food was amazing. I highly recommend a stay here but I have the following points.
LOCATION- 1hr from Airport, 30minute bus ride to Rethmynon, you walk outside there is 2 bars and a supermarket across the road and NOTHING else, the location is very remote.
ENTERTAINMENT- The animation team entertain kids during the day and from what I saw work from 8am until midnight EVERYDAY. Credit to them for there work and effort BUT the evening entertainment is POOR, they did one sketch where they all ran onstage shouting for water, someone threw a glass of water from the audience and all the people watching were clapping and cheering (the other hotel guests were mostly Russian and German) in my opinion this was rubbish. They also stopped serving drinks at midnight but the bar is open until 1am. Not very good for when your on holiday! These are the only negative comments I have, food is A*, as is every other aspect.

We booked this on teletext and went in May. It was lovely. Clean, good pool, on the beach and lovely food. A choice of 30 breakfasts, 20 lunches and a vast array of evening meals. Good animation team for several hours each day, kids disco each night and 30 mins bus ride from rethymnon. If you want a relaxing holiday and have children under ten you cannot go wrong with this place. Avoid transfers on A2B or resrthoppa because they take ages though!

stayed here may 21 for 2weeks booked with thomas cook.arrived 0230am one receptionist (20guests) 30 mins check in a welcome drink would have been nice;on entrance to our room cigarette smoke from previous guest.why smoke in room when there are good sized balconys. the hotel is very clean and the gardens well maintained.a wide range of buffet food but the meat could be better.the beef had some sinues in.pork chops half bone.lamb very chuwey.but overall enough choice to enjoy something. The staff very friendly and a daily room service. The beach is about 400mts long but only 60mts wide with sunbeds which are charged at 3-50euros each. During our stay there were 70% germans plus russians and dutch.Although the hotel is a bit isolated a regular bus to rethymon is avaliable and there is a yellow train which does daily excursions.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2013

We booked this holiday with Thomas Cook. We haven’t booked a holiday on the High Street for about 7 years, choosing in previous years to arrange our own flights and accommodation, so we were perhaps expecting too much after flying Easyjet and Ryanair for the last few years. However the flight was very disappointing, we were seated at row 30 right by the toilets, the seats do not recline and are extremely upright. Also, as the seats back onto the toilets you have the smells! The seat pitch is also one of the smallest we have experienced and just made for a very uncomfortable flight. The return flight was much better with a bigger plane.

We arrived at the Creta Star around midnight. Check-in was swift and a porter was allocated to take us to our room, but before we could give him a tip, he was gone in a flash! The rooms at the hotel are comfortable and clean, but a bit outdated which is a theme that is echoed across the entire hotel. We had requested a double bed and actually got a double bed rather than the usual expected single beds pushed together that we normally experience which was a nice surprise. The bed sheets are clean and were changed twice during our 2 week stay and towels are changed when requested, by leaving them in the bath. Air-conditioning was not available during our visit as this is not turned on throughout the hotel until June. The only issue in our room were the patio doors leading onto the balcony. They are old and no longer fit the frames and with a gap of about 3-5mm from the frame to the door, it is impossible to shut out any noise or draughts. It's not that the draughts make you cold, but when it's windy, it's windy and the wind howls through the gap, the noise keeps you awake! Twisted toilet paper stuck in the gaps solved this issue nicely!

The room we were allocated wasn't to our taste due to being put next to a noisy family (not the hotels fault!). We asked for the room to be changed before we got settled in to be told that this had to wait until after 9am the next morning and nothing could be done until then but next morning we were given a new room which was much better.

Our room was a “Mountain View” room and received sunshine in the afternoon. Due to the position of the rooms they face the main road and are above reception. Transfer coaches turn up at all times which can be quite noisy. The evening entertainment is also right by these rooms so if you are more morning people like us then this can be a problem. It only took a couple of days to get used to the traffic noise (bearing in mind you can't close the noise out) and the cockerel in the neighbouring houses doesn't pipe up until around 5am, but there is a barking dog somewhere nearby which does it's thing all night, every night. We spoke to another couple who didn’t hear it as they were heavy sleepers so not a problem for everyone.

We had a late pick up when leaving so we asked to keep our room, the cost to keep a room on is 6 euros for each hour you require. Checking out was simple. Just hand back your key and that's that!

The hotel is located pretty much on it's own with a couple of shops in walking distance. The Coreli taverna next door that seems pretty dated, is a nice little place to go and get yourself a Mythos, and sit by the sea taking it easy. You certainly won't be able to get Mythos within the hotel, but the supermarket next-door to the hotel sells large cans for around 1 euro 15 cents, if you are partial to a sip or two of this award-winning Hellenic beer.

The main issue with this hotel and which spoilt it for us was it that it was impossible to get away from smoke and this was a common theme throughout. (Perhaps we were unlucky and picked the two weeks when all of Europe’s smokers decided to holiday as well!) Although smoking is not allowed within the hotel shared areas, smoking is permitted in the rooms on the balcony. The issue with this is that the draughts suck the smoke from the rooms under the doors and into the corridors which become contaminated with smoke. Either the smoke detectors do not work in the hotel or they are not very sensitive because most days the smell of smoke was so dense, that we had to hold our breath to make it to our room!

Likewise, the garden and pool areas are awash with smoke. Having travelled to many places in the world and many times in Europe we realise that many people and particularly foreigners do smoke all the time, however, we have never been on a holiday where so many people smoke all in one place. When walking out of the hotel doors into the gardens you are greeted with smoke, rather than fresh air. Sunbathing is our favourite past-time, but sunbathing in the grounds of the Creta Star is like being stuck in a fumigation chamber with people lighting up all around you every five minutes!

The mixture of German, Dutch and Belgian people certainly outweigh the few English people and I can also safely say that I have never been in a hotel where the vast majority of people were so rude and ignorant. Expect to be pushed in the bar and dinner halls and barged in front of at the lifts. Stand your ground and don't be a pushover, you have been warned!

Similar to most places you go these days, there is an animation team that keeps you busy during the day and with stretching, aerobics, water polo and the like to get involved in, you will never be short of things to do if this is your thing. The strange thing is that stretching and aerobics is done among the snack bar tables!

The beach is nice, not very big and the water extremely clear, but you will be expected to pay 3 euros a day for using the sunbeds here which we did think was a bit of a cheek seeing as the hotel is right on the beach.

The restaurant is a good size and the range of food is ample, although not brilliant quality, but enough to keep you happy for a week or two. Like many places these days, they tend to cater, on the whole, for the tastes of their clientele rather than provide Cretan food, which as a shame. A Choice of chicken, pork, pasta with pasta sauces and pizza are served every day, with other foods being changed around to give a variety.

Waffles and eggs are freshly cooked for breakfast and then placed in a heated container and if you get them just when they are cooked you get them fresh.

The restaurant has two patio areas that you can eat outside. At breakfast time, one of the patio areas is non-smoking. This is the only time that an outside area is made non-smoking across the entire hotel.

The bar is quite nice, but the inside area has nowhere near enough seats if the weather is wet or windy. Like the restaurant, there is a choice of two outside areas, one at the bottom of the bar and one at the side. Both of these are smoking terraces, so you are out of luck if you are a non-smoker, you have to sit inside or put up with smoke clouds! There is a different cocktail each day and the staff are really accommodating and friendly.

We ate at the Italian one evening and it served lovely food, we were told by our Rep that lots of people had complained about it but we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Entertainment is provided every night either in the nightclub just off reception, or behind the pool area. We chose not to attend any of these during our stay so cannot comment on this.

We also discovered that you have to pay 6 euros a time to use the gym at the sister hotel next door. This wasn’t made clear in Thomas Cook’s brochure which just stated they had a gym at the hotel.

If you want to go out of the hotel, then it is likely that you will be either walking to the neighbouring supermarkets, or catching a bus or a cab into Rethmyno. Buses come outside the hotel to Rethmyno every hour and arrive around 10-past the hour. The journey is around half an hour and the bus driver usually announces when you are there. The bus drops you off on the outside of the Old Town and will pick you up at the bus stop just over the road from where it dropped you off (opposite the car park), but be warned. If you go down in the evening, the bus will not stop at this bus stop to pick you up. Instead, it stops at the kiosk round the corner with the umbrella outside – strange. We fell foul to this and ended up catching a taxi back, rather than waiting and hour and 15 minutes for the next bus.

Bus tickets can be purchased from the hotel at 1.60 Euros one-way. If the hotel shop is not open, then you can buy them from reception. If the shop is open, then you have to get them from there as reception will not sell them to you!

Likewise, if you get on in a place where you can buy a ticket, then the bus driver will only let you on if you have a ticket and will make you get off the bus and buy one (hurry or he will drive away!). If you get on in a place that doesn't sell tickets, then you will be able to buy a ticket on the bus and the bus driver will let you on – once again, strange!

You can buy bus tickets near bus stops from sweet kiosks along the road and the whole bus experience is fairly enjoyable. The bus you will catch will be the hotel bus (Number 20) and stops, as you would expect, near hotels. If you wish to go further, then you will need to catch the local bus. Yu can do this by going up to the main road, waiting for what looks like the right bus and flag it down. Ask if it's going where you want to go before getting on. If you don't wish to flag a bus down, then you can pick a local bus up in Rethmyno, but you will probably need to come back the way you came, if you are going west to Iraklion.

A taxi to Rethmyno will cost you around 18 Euros and take 20 minutes, or if you wish to go to the airport, around 89 Euros. There always seem to be ample taxis around, but you may need to get the hotel to call you one if heading out from there.

All taxis are Mercedes and are comfortable. Taxi drivers are really friendly and will get you were you are going.

For the first few days we rented a car and explored the island, we had been last year and revisited that area again as well as making a trip to Heraklion and Chania. We hired our car from Cretarent who provided a fantastic service so can highly recommend them.

Overall this is a really good hotel and one many will enjoy, we would have stayed again if it wasn’t for the smoke and the location is just a bit ‘out of the way’ for us.

Room Tip: Sea View Rooms are quieter but do not seem to get the sun

We had a wonderful holiday at the Creta Star Hotel, all the staff were so helpful and courteous. Food lovely there is so much choice. The only thing to watch out for is that the air conditioning in the hotel is not normally switched on until June and it was a little uncomfortable at night. We had a side sea view which was lovely. The animation team were fantastic and worked really hard at keeping everyone entertained but also were not pushy if you did not want to take part in the activities. Our holiday did not include transfers from the Airport and all the large transfer firms seemed to want a fortune for transfers - the highest price we were quoted was £595 which we felt was extortionate, so we decided to find a local family run taxi firm -their email address is paleochora.taxi@yahoo.gr and web address www.paleochora-taxi.com - we are so glad we did they were fantastic, Giorgio was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived and rang us the day before our departure to confirm our pick up time, again he arrived at the hotel in plenty of time to pick us up and get us back to the airport for our check in. We can't thank him enough for his advise and help.Another tip if you wish to visit Knossos is to go the the little travel agent just down the road from the hotel - turn left out of the hotel and it is about 100 yards down the road on the left just next to the car rental shop, We paid just 18 euros for a day trip which took us at 9.15 in the morning on a air conditioned coach to Heraklion and we had 4 hours to browse and shop then back to the coach to be taken to Knossos and we had 2 hours to look at the wonderful Knossos palace ruins - was amazing. It does normally cost another 6 euros per person to get into Knossos but we were very fortunate as we went on Greek day and got in free!! the Greek or Cretan people are so lovely. Then we were all dropped off again at our hotels. There was a guide on the bus to let you know what was going to happen and give tips like if you want to visit the museum in Heraklion you can pay 10 euros for that and the entry fee in to Knossos which saves you money. There are guides at the entrance to Knossos to take you around but we found this was not neccessary as everything has signs to explain all the sites and you can buy good books - cheaper than guides - we noticed the guides really rushed their clients around. All in all we had a lovely holiday and cannot wait to return.

Room Tip: We had a side sea view which was lovely the only thing as I mentioned before is that it is quite sti...

The hotel isn't disabled friendly there's lots of steps. The staff are very helpful and friendly. There is only one jewellery shop, , one bar and two supermarket's outside the hotel, and the picture of the room in the brochure is not like the rooms we where in don't know where that room is, the rooms could do with being refurbished. If you just want to eat drink and relax then you'll like this hotel, if you like to have a walk after your evening meal there is nothing to go and look at

My husband and I went to the Creta Star for 2 weeks 18 Sep-2 oct, it's a lovely hotel, it was clean and friendly. The animation team was the best entertainers we've seen for a long time (well done team) they made the holiday really special. The restaurant and bar staff catered to all ur needs, couldn't fault any of staff at all. The only thing we wasn't happy with is, you pay all that money then ur expected to pay for the sun beds down on the beach which was lovely and that the air conditioning was switched off by the 26th September, these are only a small minor things, but could help to improve to make the Creta Star even better, but still worth the money spent. Thank you all for a great holiday.......

Room Tip: I think no matter which room you pick you will have a great holiday.
