“Will this stay a 'Secret Escape' much longer?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2014

We have just returned from a week at this lovely hotel (03/05/14 - 10/05/14). All of the other reviews do not do this wonderful hotel justice. Try it for yourself - you will not be disappointed !!
However if you book a vacation here independently and don't plan to hire a car, the taxi from Heraklion Airport will cost 100 Euros. Plan ahead and book a transfer before you travel, and get a better deal.

Have nothing to complain about. Most relaxing vacation my family has ever had. service and cleanliness was top. Breakfast for a King. By the sea. Fun for the kids and relaxing for us. Best combination.
Apart from the breakfast you can find way better food in the taverns near the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms with a Sea View

First of all: this hotel is actually situated at 12 km from Rethymno (Skaleta), and not IN Rethymno as many websites suggest. If you want to explore Western Crete you should rent a car anyway. In about 1 hour you can drive to or from the airport of Heraklion.
The hotel is really splendid, and the room was very spacious and spotlessly clean. Service was excellent in all aspects: a fruit basket and a bottle of wine were waiting in the room on our arrival, and we received a farewell gift basket when we left after a week. The in-room safe was (too) small for a laptop and/or big camera. Free WIFI in our room was bad (low signal strength) because we were quite far from the reception area, but in the WIFI zone the signal was excellent.
The service at the reception desk was superb and very friendly, and many languages were fluently spoken by the desk personnel (Greek, French, English, German) and also by most of the waiters in the restaurant. We had half board, and the buffet dinner was good to excellent, with always some typical genuine Greek dishes of good quality. Table service in the restaurant was really perfect: an empty plate was never left more than 30 seconds on your table, and a drink arrived mostly within 1-2 minutes after ordering. Breakfast was excellent, with a very large variety of dishes. The swimming pools are excellent and very clean, and the garden is perfectly maintained. Plenty of parking space was available for our car. For a good price you should make a reservation directly to the hotel at least some weeks or months in advance (reservations-chal@aegeanstar.com). Summarizing: an amazing hotel to stay during a week or longer, for a very low price.

We have just returned from another visit to this lovely hotel. All the staff are hard working and well trained the customer care is first rate, the manager is always visible and he has very high standards. We totally relaxed which is what t his hotel is all about, quiet and unhurried is the name of the game.
We will keep returning because we compare all hotels to this one and Creta Royal always comes out top.
Thank you to everyone there.

we had a 2 week holiday middle of September here. weather was very good throughout, so lots of rest and sunbathing to be had which was our main reason to go. this wasn't a particularly cheap hotel and at 5 stars I was disappointed in places. clean throughout which is very important, maid came every day. Our room was right at the back of the resort by a main road and a generator which was disappointing. lots of noise from a nearby complex all night. we asked to move and pay for a better room the next day but was told the hotel was full.

like others have said , very few English guests here, we were the only ones , so communications were not always easy.

reception staff were friendly and helpful but the reception area which was huge was always empty and had no atmosphere. just somewhere to walk through to get to somewhere more interesting really.

the pool was fine, never too busy. you had to 'buy' 2 towels at the start of your holiday then got your money back at the end. you could exchange them daily for fresh ones. they were quite small.

grounds were exceptional, very well kept and pretty

food was not terrific to my taste anyway. bland and warm never hot. for a barbecue night we had a kebab that was it. service was very efficient, not very friendly, plates taken whilst still eating. it felt as if you were being rushed so they could have your table as soon as possible. wine was drinkable. breakfast was the best meal, nice coffee. lunch at the beach restaurant was a bit hit and miss. nice location but only a few tables outside. again, you felt very rushed. it was only at the end of our stay did I realise you could have ice cream anytime from there. very little was explained.

the sea was sometimes very choppy and there were lifeguards constantly whistling at you to come out of the sea. beach was narrow and there was a charge for sunbeds so we stayed in the gardens close by it was only a few steps to the beach

we did venture to the large sister hotel a few times to use the shop, massage (which was excellent) and to watch the entertainment- mainly targeted at kids but I expected that

we hired a car for three days and explored the island, Rethymon we loved and also the other parts of the island which were a bit more remote.

quite expensive to eat out.

the main reason for three stars is that the air conditioning in the hotel is turned off at nights, it was unbearably hot, we complained but nothing could be done. I hardly slept and if you opened the windows you got the bugs in. as it was 29/30 degrees during the day and in the twenties at night I thought this was very poor.

bathroom in the room was adequate but the toilet leaked.

towels were rough and tiny.

we enjoyed crete and we managed to sleep a lot through the day whilst sunbathing but hardly got any at night due to heat.

I would not return to this hotel.

Room Tip: rooms at the back are awful- need to be nearer the sea

Excellent hotel good food good staff weather to die for pools were salt water but were so clean and fresh i was surprised there were 6 of us in our party and it was so relaxing the fridge was full showers were awesome air con was ok towels were changed every day pool bar was very good the minstrel restaurant was to die for

Not many english you could also use next hotel apart from eat and drink there
Buses were every half an hour and fairly cheap

Right the downside of the holiday was the germans and russians too many of them and there were a disgrace and rudest people i have ever met this is the only reason we would not return to this hotel and they seem to get priority on everything
Never want to see a german or a russian again at one stage was ruining our holiday

Ps if you get the chance go on the jeep safari awesome
