“Cretan History”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Vamos is a traditional and beautiful inland village, with glimpses of the sea.
Previously we have only driven through on the way to somewhere else.
So glad to have taken some time to explore this special and unspoilt place with it's rich history.
We stayed in Aggelamos 1, which was simple, spacious and comfortable.
The weather was so good we didn't spend much time inside but out on the balcony, which has the most idyllic views out over the village, Ideal for sitting on to take in the afternoon sunshine and absorb the sounds (cockerells) and smells of the village and watch cat antics.
A walk around the village reveals extraordinary architectural delights.
The girls in the tourist office were very knowledgeable and extremely helpful.
We loved it so much we are returning in October.

Room Tip: Aggelamos, private, simple, spacious and with lovely views.

Spent 12 fabulous days in the Vamos region. Stayed at the delightful Villa Rodi in the tiny village of Douliana, where we were able to enjoy Greek Orthodox Easter. Especially appreciated Douliana Taverna, also Monica's Taverna in Gavalohori with its great food and music. Vamos Traditional Village tourist office was excellent and between them Kleio and guide George couldn't have been more helpful. Plan to go back next year.

We stayed for four days during Christmas vacations at Vamos Traditional Village and we can't wait to get back there and enjoy it during summertime as well!

Everything was as we expected it and even better! We stayed in "Agroulida" which was very cozy and we instantly felt like home. And above all, the price - quality relation was great.
Also, the people working at the travel agency of Vamos traditional village were extremely helpful and friendly and gave us a lof of useful information. And last but not least we enjoyed great cretan dishes at the tavern of Sterna tou Bloumosifi (at New Year's Eve they made us feel like we were members of their family).
The village of Vamos itself is very beautiful and picturesque, a rare original cretan village, and there is so many things to see and do at the area that you definitely have to go back again and again...
It's a good thing to find places like this where hospitality is pure and genuine and people really care about your having a good time!

Room Tip: Agroulida was one of the cheapest houses but it was really nice and cozy. Generally speaking, houses...

This was our second trip to Vamos, and this time we stayed in Fillipa's House. Absolutely fantastic - certainly one of the nicest rentals I've had (and I've travelled in Europe quite a bit). Very comfortable, well-equipped. And the service at the tourist office was lovely. This is a very nice area for walking as well as beach and eating - highly recommended!

One of the joys of a holiday is undoubtedly going out for a lavish dinner each night, though to be honest, at some point, looking at yet another menu can become a little off-putting. However, Vamos traditional village not only boasts wonderful restaurants such as Taverna Marouvas and the Sterna tou Bloumosifi, but if their allure has paled after the sixth night of delicious stuffed chestnuts or grilled mushrooms, then a traditional Greek cooking class with Koula Barydakis is the thing. We spent a wonderful evening with another couple preparing Greek food that we love from our restaurants, and then eating all of it! Not only was the cooking very enjoyable and pleasant, the food turned out delicious, and Koula managed to remove my reticence about preparing kolokithokeftedes and other delicacies. We have since hosted several parties where we treated our friends to five-course meals which were fun to prepare and enormously impressive. Using fresh ingredients, Koula will convince everyone of the joy of cooking and the ease and fun of preparing food for large groups. You take your time, (generally from 4-9pm), but the result is worth it. The cooking classes take place in the ruin of a traditional house in Vamos, and there is room for ten or twelve, including children.
Vamos is a lovely village, generally unspoiled and partly beautifully restored, and the cooking lessons complemented a perfect holiday.

We were at Douliana in the Manolis house in octobre 2012. It's such a wonderful place. Everything is perfect there... The region is just great! So green and calm... We loved the sea down at Almyrida. The village Vamos is such a nice place to be and to buy things... in octobre you could believe that you're the only tourist there :-)

Our cottage was very nice. The owner (Mr. Manolis) is a real nice bloke. We hat our own chickens for eggs ;-). The house was clean and well furnished.

It was our first stay in crete! We travelled around by daytrips from Douliana. But as much as we have seen of the island... the vamos region is the nicest place to stay! We'll come back to that wonderful place for sure!

Room Tip: book your cottage at the vamos traditional village! Worth every cent...

We stayed at Vamos Traditional Village in September of 2012. It was our first time to Greece and our first stop was the beautiful Island of Crete and the beautiful Vamos Village. Our cottage was by far one of the most special places we have ever stayed at. Well appointed, great view, wonderful little private patio, pool just steps away, fully equipped kitchen complete with complimentary "Ouzo" (Greece's famous aniseed-flavoured liquor). It was clean, quiet and so very comfortable. We will go back again, hopefully soon :)
