“Really a nice experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2012

As you can see we are quite well traveled. During our world trip the previous year we took as well several cooking classes all over the world.

We had a nice time at vamos village. Everything is well organized and the setting, the kitchen, is very original. We liked that a lot. Koula, the cook, explained nicely about the Greek style of cooking, the herbs and ingrediences. Maximum group size are 10 people which is as well very good. We prepared six dishes which were all very tasty and we think for sure that we will be able to cook it at home.

It is a hands-on class, not a demonstration. But all the 10 people are working on everything together (not everybody prepares their own portion)... So one is cutting the tomatoes, one is chopping the herbs, Koula does the seasoning. But it worked quite well!

Drinks are included, and you get a copy of all the recepies. We had a nice time!!

Hubby and I decided to do something a little different on our vacation and booked up for the cooking classes offered at Vamos Village. What a fantastic experience!
We arrived early for lunch beforehand and ate at a little taverna at the end of the lane leading to Vamos Traditional Village, can't remember the name but it was great Cretan homecooked food. Hubby had the goat and I had sardines stuffed in vine leaves.
At 4pm we met the class, a Swiss couple, and 4 Dutch hikers who had taken the class previously. We were led into an open air ruined olive mill which was charming. There we met our teacher, a lovely Cretan lady (whose name unfortunately I have forgotten) who has lived in the US/Canada and speaks perfect English. The kitchen was equipped with a large kitchen table we congregated around, a table with gas burners beside it and a small oven on top of another table. The sink only had cold water, and there was a fridge and a dresser in another corner. Very basic, but it was everything we needed, and kept us all cosy and talkative.

Once the recipes were covered (no cream sauces, it isn't used in Cretan cookery), along with a quick gulp of Raki and a taste of the local herbal mountain tea with honey, we were handed aprons and got down to work. Jobs were thrown up in to the air and we all jumped to volunteer so everyone was busy and having fun, gossiping about food along the way.

Our menu was:

Aubergine salad (roasted aubergines made into a dip - our favourite dish)
Long peppers stuffed with cheese, ham and herbs
Lamb stew with green beans
Cretan fried cheese pasties
Greek Salad
Chickpea salad
Orange Cake which the cook had made previously

Wine was freely drunk while we worked, and there was a lot of laughter and camaraderie and we were all in awe of how much olive oil was used, as it is expensive in other countries. Cats were rubbing our legs waiting for titbits and the sun was shining as we chopped mint, dill and rosemary which smelled amazing. We sampled each ingredient before it was put into a dish and the local smoked pork bacon was a definite hit.

Time seemed to fly by and suddenly everything was ready to be eaten. We sat at a long table which was beautifully laid out and enjoyed the fruits of our labour with our cook. Even though we feasted till we burst there was still plenty of food left over and it was parcelled out for us to take away and some put aside for the girls who organise the booking of the classes. The cats got a good feed too :)

After a communal washing up party and more wine the classes came to a close. We walked up to the public car park in Vamos burping quietly and holding our tummies full of food. It was the best meal we had in Crete and we really enjoyed the company and the experience.

We would definitely recommend the cooking class to anyone interested in Cretan cuisine or just wanting to experience friendship and great food.

This villa is situated at a Beautiful small village, with peace and Quiet .
The house is very well equipped and eating breakfast at the terrace is a great way to begin the day.
The pool is Beautiful and fun to use and the hole complex is very well Maintained.
The Disadvantages was a terrible mosquito attack at night that kept us awake a few nights,
We had at the house candles and something against the mosquito bet It did not help,
Although the mosquitoes I recommend staying there.

In 2011 we spent one week in Vamos before going to eastern Creta that we had already visited some time ago. Our experience prompted us to go back for a fortnight this year.
Vamos is a real village, in a rural environment, but only 10 minutes drive from sandy beaches of the small resort of Kalyves.
Many old houses in Vamos have been renovated with taste and respect of the traditions. They are spacious and adequately equipped, ideal for holiday makers. The village itself has the same sort of atmosphere as some of our small French ones, but with the proverbial Greek hospitality as a bonus. Apart from a few noisy motorbikes in the main street, and some barking dogs at sunset, all is calm, quiet and relaxing;
You won't see a souvenir shop in Vamos, but all that you may need can be found in the small shops.
A few special mentions: the traditonal bakery, the traditonal grocery, (just opposite the pharmacy) that offers in particular a lot of Cretan cheeses (don't miss Mizithra, fresh cheese), honey and so on.
As on both occasions we were very near, Bloumosifi tavern quickly became a favourite (we didn't try the other taverns in Vamos). The wide variety , quality and prices of the food are excellent. It is always a good sign when you see a lot of "locals"( later in the evening) mixing with the tourists.
A few tips: Greek is a difficult language, but make sure that you know a few everyday words. As in many countries, this will be appreciated. Beware of the gigantic portions of food and act accordingly!
This year, we organised our trip ourselves, with the assistance of the Tourist Office, where you can rely on the competence, efficacy and kindness of Elena, Klio and another young lady whose name we have forgotten. We opted for regular flights with Aegean Airlines: much more comfortable than rotten charter flights and no more expensive.
One disadvantage, at least for many of our French compatriots, is that, unless you speak Greek, English is practically the only language.
We certainly won't hesitate to back to Vamos, and if possible, for a longer stay;

We stayed 11 days at one of the spacious Zonera villas situated between Vrysses and Nipos. Both villages have every facilities in terms of shops, cafes and tavernas; as to the picturesque village of Vamos, it is only about 10 minutes away by car.
The location is fabulous with a stunning view of the White Mountains and no direct neighbours (besides, the other villa was unoccupied at the time). The surroundings are very green and the peaceful and quiet environment is only troubled by the musical tinkle of goat/sheep bells.
We delighted in the well-tended and beautiful garden and the swimming pool in between walks down a couple of less well-known gorges, hikes in the mountains, lazy afternoons on the nearby beaches or visits to those charming towns Chania and Rethymnon, both within short driving distance. The villas can even boast of an authentic bread oven and barbecue facilities. The houses are cleaned and the bed linen/towels are changed regularly.
True, the Zonera villas are modern although built in traditional style. All in all, Vamos SA represents agrotourism at its best; in a nutshell, this is a pretty good compromise between responsible ecotourism and holidaying in all-inclusive resorts.
But the biggest suprise came from the extraordinarily friendliness and attentiveness of the villas' owners, Elini and Nikos, who made us feel almost like family members: they really spoil their guests those two, there is no other word for it! We had never experienced such hospitality before.
Special thanks go to Nikos' little but fierce watchdog Alex, that was great entertainment. And of course to Klio and Elena from the Tourist Office of Vamos Traditional Village who did their best to make our stay as enjoyable and confortable as possible. We had a lovely time. So we whole-heartedly recommend this part of Crete and we definitely will renew the experience.

We stayed there for a week and we couldn't have asked for a better place. The houses have been renovated to a fantastic standard blending traditional with modern. The village is beautiful and has a very original feel of the village life with locals and tourists coexisting in harmony. The best thing though about this place are the people who are extremely hospitable, kind and always happy to help. Klio and Elena that run the tourist office literally went out of their way to ensure we had all we needed and to make our stay as comfortable as possible. So for us its official, we have fallen in love with the place and the people and it will be hard visiting other places onwards as the bar has been set quite high. In any case we cant wait to go back!

Special accomodations in the heart of Vamos. It's a very charming village, you can do very nice walks, eat at cosy places and enjoy a nice view at the white mountains. We stayed at Manolis houses. We shared a swimmingpool with the other house, perfect for us! Enjoyed it very much. It was nice and clean, great service. We'll come back to Vamos!
