Arosmari Village Hotel
Reviewed July 16, 2014

Just back after a wonderful fortnight in the Arosmari. We were very warmly welcomed and felt instantly at home in such relaxing and peaceful surroundings. Vamos is also a great base for touring West Crete with so much of interest in the surrounding area although it's tough to pull yourself away from the peace and relaxing atmosphere of Arosmari. A good selection of tavernas within walking distance is another bonus.
Did I mention it was very peaceful and relaxing?

We have just returned from a fabulous week in Mint cottage. The cottage itself was beautiful! Many original features, very quaint but very greek. The setting is fabulous in the small inland greek village of Vamos. Sheep are regularly seen and heard being herded up and down the road by the shepherd on his moped. You definitely need a car to explore further and we visited lake kournas, the beach at kalives and then a fabulous drive through the mountains to the south of the island where we picked up a small boat to Loutro( only accessible by boat) and then persuaded a taverna owner to taxi boat us over to sweetwater beach( for a small fee- it was siesta time!). Nothing is too much trouble for all the team at Arosmari. Trish is a wealth of knowledge, Ruby oversees a gorgeous breakfast and Nikos the owner organised a greek music night with his fellow musicians in the amphitheatre which is built in the grounds. We had the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration coupled with experiencing a real greek village including a fabulous cooking lesson with mrs koula arranged by the lovely ladies in the tourist office. All in all 10/10 from us but if you want busy bars and bling then this is not for you!!! We will definitely be going back. Thanks to all at simpson travel too who sorted everything out from change of airport, extra leg room seats etc we just said what we wanted -they did the rest.

Room Tip: All cottages are fabulous. We looked round them all- (for future reference!) we stayed in Mint which...

My husband and I have travelled all over the world both near and far. This was the best holiday ever. We have never been to Crete before in fact we have never been to Greece or any of her islands. We are already planning to go back. The staff are amazing and breakfasting in the garden was a lovely experience. We had car hire and managed some wonderful trips through the most beautiful gorges. The village is lovely and the restaurants provide wonderful food at reasonable prices. This place is a must.

What to say if I want to keep this place to myself.! We stayed in Fennel cottage just over the road from the gardens, reading room and pool. Breakfasts were sublime, my husband is converted to yogurt and honey for breakfast. The beds were comfortable. We usually can't wait to get back to our own bed. Trish the concierge was so helpful about anything and Mike kept the gardens immaculate. The scent of the osmanthus outside the cottage was intoxicating and The View of the White mountains was stunning. definitely a place for relaxation a and unwinding .

Where do we start? The accommodation was excellent. Our cottage was quirky, set out on four levels. The view from the bedroom balcony was breathtakingly. It looked out over the White Mountains. The bedroom was beautiful and the bed very comfortable. Nearby are the gardens with a swimming pool, reading room over an honesty bar, and a spa and Hammas. Breakfast was taken each day in the.garden area. There are some fine taverns in the village serving the best of Cretan food and a great little bakery.

Vamos itself is still a traditional village and there are some excellent walks in the area.

The travel company's local contact, Trish, could not have been more helpful, providing good advice on where to eat and what to do. She went way above and beyond what one normally gets from a travel rep.

Our only regret is that we didn't book for two weeks instead of one.

There were lots of little touches to make the holiday special and Simpson's were very professional throughout.

As a couples/adults only complex it makes a wonderfully tranquil place to relax and recharge.

Wonderful village, we loved bloumasifis (I am so sorry I have no idea how to spell it) and we thought that one of the waiters looked just like Orlando bloom!

One thing I would says as that my bed was so hard I could barely sleep on it. It was more like a brick wall with a sheet on top.

We did a cookery course where we learnt how to make cheese pies, and we also went on lots of walks. The breakfast is second to none, such a big selection of food. It does mean that we end up eating too much, though!

Unfortunately when we stayed it was very windy, and there was a six foot tall vase type thing next to the pool. One morning we woke up to find that the vase had fallen into the pool, smashed, and all of the soil from the plant had gone everywhere, and so we couldn't go into the pool for a few days but oh well!

While we wish we could say "it's terrible" so we can keep it to ourselves, in truth the Arosmari Cottages in Vamos, Crete, are fantastic - truly a "retreat" and an oasis of peace away from hectic lives back at home !

We were fortunate to find this place almost randomly - we are normally more into road trips around Europe so to go to a resort and stay in the same place for two whole weeks is new for us. But the Arosmari Hotel - it recently changed from self catering, to a Adults Only venue - spells "relaxation" from the start. The booking process was personal and friendly, the office staff had all visited the hotel and spoke enthusiastically about it and the beautiful surrounding Cretan countryside. The arrangements at the airport were simple and the directions spot on.

When you get here to the village of Vamos, you find a number of detached and semi-detached cottages all lovingly restored by the owner, Nikos. The furthest is no more than a couple of minutes walk from the pool and the central breakfast area, where you can discuss plans for the day and experiences with your fellow guests and what they recommend. The utterly brilliant concierge, Trish (more of a friend than a concierge, actually) is on hand daily to help plan your tours and recommend the best places to eat. There are some organised events but we were under no pressure to get involved in them. Trish's husband, Mike, is a great guy who works around the place - he speaks Greek and has a good knowledge of the surrounding area too.

We stayed in Rosemari Cottage which is detached and private – simple but supremely comfortable with every facility you could need. Breakfast is prepared by Ruby, a lovely, exuberant and amusing lady together with her assistant Lena who is very sweet. There is a fine spread, as much as you can eat, and the eggs are local and SO rich, yellow and tasty. The marmalade is made from oranges in the garden and they even have their own walnuts !

Nothing is too much trouble when it come to nice touches.....from the candle lanterns lit each night, the imaginative exterior decor around the place - huge pots and other ornaments around the stunning garden which makes the whole thing so authentic. We were even presented with a fabulous cheesecake which appeared in the fridge when Trish found out it was our wedding anniversary. The grounds even has its own tiny consecrated Chapel which is beautiful. And when Crete had its most dramatic earth tremor in years, an alarmed looking Trish was rushing around checking we were all ok.....actually it was an amazing experience to have felt the earth move.....there was no apparent damage.

Crete is a very large island - much bigger than some might imagine, roughly 200 miles east to west and 45 miles north to south so there is masses to do although the practicalities of traversing the island all the way from east to west would be an issue as there are no motorways and the roads are often small and winding.

There is plenty to see for history buffs from Minoan ruins to locations of WW2 atrocities (Crete had a pretty gruesome war) and the corresponding British Commonwealth and German war cemeteries both of which are very moving. There are many beautiful mountain villages and a stunning coastline with quaint little fishing harbours. If you are looking for recommendations feel free to get in touch !

Finally, Simpson Travel do a wonderful job of making sure that all is running smoothly - I had a problem with my car and they just handled everything.

So If you're looking for peace and quiet, relaxation.......Arosmari Traditional Village Hotel in Vamos, Crete, is THE place !! I had added a few photos that are different from some of the others !
