We just got back from a 5 night stay at the Vedema and it was VERY relaxing. The great thing about this hotel is that it is away from all the tourist action so you never feel crowded. The staff is very friendly and helpful. For those of you who are looking to stay in the white washed buildings that look over the water - this is not the hotel for you. You can see the water but it is far off in the distance. I would suggest looking into their sister property - Mystique - if you are looking for the views. We did the wine tasting that conduct in their cellar and it was very informative and fun! Met lots of nice couples there. Both my husband and I got a massage in their spa - which was superb. The only bad thing about the spa is that it is RIGHT next to the weight room with very, very thin walls, so if someone is working out (which they were when I was in there) - you can hear EVERYTHING. I kept waking up to crashing weights. Another thing to note - they do provide shuttles into the city of Fira, but not to Oia (the one with the famous sunsets). Because of the shuttle schedule - I think the last shuttle leaves at 7:15 - you have to put some thought into how you will get to Oia. A cab from Fira costs 15 euro and a cab from Oia to Vedema costs 25 euro. It can add up fast! Overall, it was a great experience! Dennis and Arthur are SO nice!

My new Husband and I stayed at the Vedema Resort for the second part of our honeymoon. We flew in from our 2 day trip to Athens. Before our trip, the concierge contacted my by email to set up shuttle service from the airport to the resort. On our way to our resort the driver gave us a brief tour along the route. We pulled up to the little village of Megalohori and was promptly greeted by the concierge and reception. We arrived so early our room wasn't quite ready, so we leisurely toured the property on our own. It is a well laid out property and is set in a vineyard type setting. I read the reviews and knew not to expect a view. But still you can see the mountains and the sea afar.

While we waited for our room we enjoyed the champagne breakfast by the pool. We also stayed by the pool for about an hour and were notified that our room was ready (we were pleasantly surprised on how quick they had our room since we arrived at 6:30am). When we checked in we were alerted that there was shuttle service to and from the beach and to the town of Fira. If you do not mind being on a schedule, this is a nice service. We ended up taking a cab one night home.

We stayed in the Dorian Suite for 5 nights. As part of our Luxury Link Package, we had a 3 hour private island tour, Daily champagne breakfast buffet, 2 80 minute olive oil massage, rose petal turndown service, and private wine tasting. We enjoyed every minute of each of these activities and Aris/Maria the concierge were extremely helpful. We also booked a sunset cruise on the Thelessa and rented an ATV for a day to do our own exploring.

If you want to be in the "thick" of things or in the heart of the action, the Vedema isn't the place for you. If you are looking for a special, luxurious, and a relaxed quite oasis, the Vedema is surely the place to be. We visited Thira and Oia during our stay on Santorini, and yes there is plenty to do there, we really felt more at home at the Vedema in the cute sleepy village of Megalahori.

It all started off pretty well when our driver greeted us early in the AM at the airport (around 8am). As we were checking in, the front desk attendant informed us that breakfast was not included in our price. Because I am a SPG member, I got a discount for the room which was still about $240 EUROS per night - there were 3 of us. Based on their website, the rate includes an American Breakfast Buffet. No where on the website or fine prints did they ever mention this little disclaimer of no breakfast at the special rate. I had to speak with 3 different people about this. And finally, the reservations manager admitted that it was a mistake with their system, but basically... too bad! The breakfast was $30 EUROS per person/day. Not cheap. And the staff there were not accommodating or professional. I felt like they looked at us like "Rude Americans". Anyhow, moving on... the hotel was at least able to get us into a room. When we got into the first room, immediately I noticed it was quite small. Again there were 3 of us... we made reservations to have 2 twins and a pull away bed. The bedroom in the room had one King bed and clearly, there wasn't much space in the room to add another roll away bed. Once again... I'm going to have to go up to the front and be stared at by these foreigners who now obviously hates us. They were very hesitant to accommodate us, but they finally agreed to give us a different room. However, that room was not going to be ready until about 2-3pm (3pm was check-in time) which was fine b/c I know we did get in pretty early. In the meantime, they let us stay in the first room until noon, but we needed to leave the room at noon so they can get that room ready for another party. 3pm comes and passes. Mind you... we've been at the resort since 8am. Finally, the room was ready close to 4pm. When we got into our second room, ugh... why do they still do not have the 2 twins with the roll away bed we reserved? Why do you have that option on the website if you don't have it?! Anyhow, since the room was much bigger than the first one and had a pull out sofa bed, it was suffice. Ugh... what a long and exhausting day?! As I walked around the hotel, I didn't find anything particularly special about the facilities. The property was pretty small and quaint. I wouldn't call it a luxury resort. I was in Athens prior, at the Arion Resort and Spa (another Starwood property), and that hotel was two times more luxurious... and definitely friendlier! I will never go back to Vedema nor would I ever recommend this place to anyone. Not worth it at all!

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write about your feedback from Vedema Resort. Please allow us to underline the following regarding your comments:

- Check in time is officially at 3 pm. Despite the hotel being fully booked the night before, we acknowledged your early arrival by offering you upon arrival at 7.45 am the upgraded Suite Λ3 temporarily, so you can freshen up and rest until the Suite you reserved became available.
- The Suite you have booked was indeed twin bedded and was ready on time. You were not pleased with the Suite for some reason and we were happy to offer you an upgrade to another Suite. After viewing two different Suites you decided to take the Suite H6 which was again an upgrade. Subsequently since it was not the original Suite type you have booked, there were no twin beds in the bedroom. As it was your decision, we were convinced that you were fully satisfied with that. You also decided that there was no reason to add a rollaway bed since there was a pull out sofa bed in the Suite.
- Regarding breakfast, the policy of Starwood Hotels and Resorts is very clear on SPG bookings. Breakfast is not included in the rate and it was reconfirmed to your party by our Reservations Manager upon arrival. There was never a system error nor a confirmation presented.
- Regarding the resort category I would like to stress that we meet all standards of a 5 star
Luxury Collection Resort member of Starwood, as our official Operating license clearly states. Additionally I recommend that you may read in the hotel website the numerous accolades and international awards we have received over the years by prestigious press and travel establishments.

Kind Regards

Alex Mousios

Stayed at the Vedema for three nights in June as part of our honeymoon. The hotel is very nice and the architecture is cool and unique. It is set on a former vineyard and has a very castle/medieval type feel to it. However, the hotel is located in a town and not on a beach or off the cliffs so it does fall short with regards to location. Because of this, I would recommend that if you are someone to whom being directly on the beach or looking directly out onto the views of the Caldera is very important, this is not the resort for you. If you just want peace and quiet and don’t care about the views, then the Vedema is a nice hotel with a unique vibe.

ROOMS: The room was very nice. We made our reservation through the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts program so we were upgraded at check-in to an Aegean Suite. The suite was huge with a large living room and dining area. The living room had a flat screen TV and DVD player. The separate bedroom was also large with a true king bed. There was plenty of closet space in the suite and the bathroom was also huge. Our room also had an adjoining outdoor patio with a private Jacuzzi and patio lounge chaises.

LOCATION: To reiterate, the hotel is not on a beach or overlooking the Santorini cliffs. On clear days, you can see the sea from a top floor room/patio; however, it is definitely not the same as being in a property right on the Caldera or even on the beach. The hotel does provide a shuttle to the beach (which is about 10 minutes away); however, the shuttle leaves only 4 times a day at scheduled times so you do lose some flexibility. Additionally, at least two times that we were there, the shuttle was full and some had to wait around 30 minutes for another shuttle to come. The hotel also provides a shuttle into the main town of Fira and one to/from the airport or port.

SERVICE: The service was about what you would expect from a luxury hotel to slightly worse. For the most part, everyone was helpful. We did find it odd however that no one cleared our plates in between in between servings at breakfast. Not the biggest deal but definitely something that is typically done at that type of property. Another thing that surprised us when we went to redeem our free lunch through American Express, the kitchen had experienced an electricity outage so they could only prepare a limited selection of meals. We thought this was fine since it was something the hotel could not control; however, we were shocked when the server informed us that our free lunch certificate only covered food and that we had to pay for our 1-Fanta and 1-Coke. Considering we were limited in our food selection, we would have expected a luxury property to comp us the 2 beverages. This did not happen. We did not make a fuss and paid the bill but it definitely left a bad taste in our mouths.

AMENITIES: The pool and pool bar are a nice scene; though the pool is small. The on-property restaurant has a very cool ambience and great food/wine. The hotel offers a wine tasting which is a lot of fun with a very knowledgeable sommelier.

Stayed here for 4 nights on our honeymoon. Hotel is great, but location is a bit disappointing. We had a view of the sea...but it is quite a way from the hotel. The hotel is very quiet and off the beaten path. It is situated in the middle of Megalohori near some beautiful vineyards. Other than the location, I do have one more gripe: the hotel kept trying to persuade us to eat/taste wine at the hotel. There is a wonderful restaurant next to the hotel, so if you get tired of the food (and prices), I suggest you go across the street. When asked about other restaurants, the hotel concierge would always shrug and suggest the Mystique (the sister hotel in Oia). I would also suggest to rent a car. Taxis are expensive and they will try to rip you off (a very common practice in Greece). Room was simple and clean. We had a shower and a tub, so I'm sorry for all of you that wrote bad reviews b/c you didn't have a bathtub. Pool area was clean and staff very professional and courteous. On a side note, the Mystique is even more expensive and over priced. My wife and I shared an appetizer (a pathetic excuse for a crab cake) and each had a mixed drink. Out bill was 63 euros. Also, we went to take pictures of the caldera, and was greeted by a mumbling waiter who griped (in English) about tourists who come down to take pictures of the caldera. When confronted, he changed his story. I promptly told him I was staying at the Vedema. He remarked that people pay a lot of money to stay there and that they deserved privacy.

Our week at the Vedema was absolutely wonderful in all respects. Nestled into the village among the vineyards, spacious, quiet, and with the best possible service, the resort is beyond compare. It was particularly wonderful to walk around the village and meet so many of the local people -- all very friendly. If you go, we strongly recommend a meal at Tzenaki Taverna -- run by a delightful couple, who cook only traditional foods (amazing stuffed tomatoes) which are served along with wonderful home made wine (which we were given 'on the house' ) and our meal ended with home made grappa (also on the house). Also had great meals at Feggaro and Marmita - all within a 5 minute walk. Perhaps the most memorable were our meals in the resort's restaurant that is in a 400 year old wine cellar, lit with candles and decorated with original wine barrels -- romantic doesn't begin to describe it. All in all AWESOME - thanks to all the staff at Vedema for our most memorable and wonderful vacation.

The Vedema is my idea of perfection in hospitality. Upon arrival we were offered champagne, as we checked in, what a way to set the tone. While there were indeed a few issues with the stay it was nearly impossible to feel compelled to complain, since everything was resolved immediately, and with an incredibly friendly attitude. We were upgraded significantly due to our dual Gold SPG status to an incredible separate villa called “delta” which was more like a small apartment than a room. It had its own private Jacuzzi (though we never got it to work properly) I didn’t care, it was pretty hot anyway, and the lovely patio was so nice for enjoying a glass of wine, and some bakery delights we picked up on the way back from the resorts private area of the beach. There’s a complimentary shuttle providing rides to the beach, the airport, towns of Fira and Oia that seemed to be at the beck and call of the guests schedule more than on a rigid predetermined schedule. The breakfast overlooking the beautiful pool was the perfect way to begin a relaxing day, with plenty of choices and very casual and friendly service. While it seemed you were in a luxury resort, where service was totally “five-star” you never felt like it was snobbish or snooty, it was the purest definition of casual luxury. We arrived very late at night, and wanted a simple light bite to eat before retiring after our LONG journey from Los Angeles, the restaurant didn’t care, we weren’t ordering a full meal, or even that we in our “business casual” attire (not shorts and flip flops mind you, but not dressy). The food was creative, very delicious, and the ambiance was beautiful. The setting of this resort is in an ancient town near and beautiful church, not in one of the busy tourist centers, which for my idea of relaxing is perfect. It’s only a 15 minute ride to Fira where you can get your fill of “tourism” and then leave back to your oasis at the Vedema. There is only one place I will stay on Santorini or for that matter recommend to my closest friends.
