Let's start with Molyvos (Mithyimna) - what a true gem on a greek island, totally unspoilt and showing visitors traditional greek styling. Sunsets we can only dream about, lovely friendly island people who genuinely want to make you feel welcome on their island.
The Alkaios is set on a hill approximately 2kms from Molyvos. A small, family owned (although family not on site) 72 room property, with 4 stars which is a little dated perhaps, but rooms were clean and adequate.
Large room, AC works well, although the bathroom in our friends room was totally unacceptable as it was too small to bathe in and if you tried to have a traditional shower the bathroom flooded !!! .Our friends therefore had to bend over the small bath to wash hair etc and then sit it the small bath with knees up to their chins - which is not really acceptable.
We were offered a suite which had a bedroom/en-suite with a jacuzzi bath, and the added bonus of a lounge area with plenty of storage facilities and two sofas. There was no kettle/cups in the room but upon asking the receptionist we were quickly provided with these in both rooms. Both rooms had fridges, tvs and DVD plyers. The balconies overlooked the sea and the view across to Turkey. Rooms were cleaned daily and beds changed twice during the week and we also had fresh towels daily.
'All-inclusive' drink information was carefully worded and this was red/white wine, carbonated drinks (local brand), ouzo, local draft lager, tea/coffee/water only (charge for bottled water of one euro) and any other alcoholic drinks were chargeable.
Breakfast - choice of cold meats/cheeses, greek yoghurt (which was 'thinned down'), toast/jams/honey and 'hot' buffet of fried/scrambled eggs, bacon, boiled eggs
Lunch - Salads (same everyday), chicken, pork, lamb, beef in different formats, chips/scallop potatoes/rice and deserts of coconut cake (until it ran out) walnut cake and orange or apple
Evening Meal - Soup/Salad (same as lunch!!), chicken, lamb, pork, beef in different formats (same as lunch) chips/scallop potatoes/rice and deserts of coconut cake (until it ran out) walnut cake and orange or apple
You may see a repetition on the menu ....... yep that is what it was, every day the same things just in a slightly different format.
We do not go to Greece to be offered chips at every meal and not even hot chips for that matter !! The food really let this hotel down. Mostly the food was tepid, not hot !!! They did not seem to have the facilities/systems to keep any of the food hot. We spoke with the rep who was very helpful and spoke to management but sadly this had no effect and possibly made things worse, as after that every time we went to collect some food, the chef started turning over the food in the bain-maries !!!!!!!
POOL AREAS/POOL BAR
The hotel has 2 lovely main pool areas a high level and a low level, both overlooking a small strip of beach which has considerable amounts of seaweed. The pool areas were clean and the pool bar (top pool) served all the drinks on the all inclusive list, along with good quality ice creams in various flavours (not just for children) which was great. Victor at the pool bar was both friendly and knowledgeable and told us of nice places to eat in the town for our nights out.
Stephanos (Victor's brother) served us in the lobby bar in the evenings and again was both pleasant and knowledgeable about the local area.
FREE SHUTTLE BUS TO MOLYVOS
The hotel offer this 4 times daily and this is really useful as it is slightly too far to walk into the town.
To sum up, this COULD be a great all inclusive hotel if they could offer hot food and did not skimp on supplies. We know it was the last but one week of the season, but surely the customers should still be offered a fair choice of foods right up until the end of the season. I feel sure if the owner was offered less than this on his vacation, he would be rather unimpressed ! Maybe as the hotel moves to B & B next season customers will get what they pay for ?
We enjoyed our holiday, but the edge was taken off because of the particular aspects mentioned above.
