The pictures on the website are extremely misleading....the hotel is in an extremely run down neighborhood. The rooms (especially bathrooms!) are extremely small and in need of an update. The owners were quite rude and speak little to no English making communication very difficult.

We stayed at the Petra Hotel for one week in August and there can be no denying that it is a delightful hotel. It has an excellent location overlooking a picturesque bay and the owners are most attentive. The hotel is almost all suites, our room had a separate living room, kitchen area, bedroom and bathroom nicely furnished and comfortable. We had a fridge with water in it but you do get charged for what you use. The air con is fantastic, a definite plus in August. We had a terrace that was in dappled shade for most of the day and a view of the bay . The staff are very efficient and a team clean your room while you are at breakfast. Nothing is too much trouble, the owners Petroula and Costas are very knowledgable about the island, will suggest trips, eating places and will arrange car hire or one of the nine taxis on the island. However, the Petra will not suit everyone. It is built on the side of a hill and there are steps, lots of them, and some are quite narrow. If you have trouble climbing steps this is not the hotel for you. There is no pool. This did not matter to us as the beach is a short distance away and swimming in the sea is safe and clean. There is a beach at Petra half a mile away with umbrellas and beds. There is a sun terrace at the hotel but only two beds and one large umbrella. Breakfast at the Petra is a very special occasion. The food is plentiful - rolls, ham, cheese, cake, cheese pie, mini croissants and tea/coffee but it is the same every morning. If you want a change like fresh orange juice you get charged extra - the juice was a whopping 6 Euros and a plate of melon (the same melon we were given free on the house in the local tavernas) was 9 Euros. The hotel does not offer any other meals, however, there are a variety of tavernas around the bay and the Sunrise taverna on the road to Chora has a lovely view of Grikos bay although the beauty of this view is somewhat spoilt by the presence of three derelict blocks that used to be a hotel.

I've never written a review before, but I have used this website before and found it helpful. So, I want to return the help to others who may be traveling to the amazing island of Patmos. I went there last summer with my family (includes 2 kids, ages 8 and 11). This was the highlight of our vacation. It is like being in heaven on earth. The hotel has a breathtaking view of the large expanse of water and outlying islands. The decor of the hotel is artistic and elegant, but very simple and soothing. The owners of the hotel are truly lovely people, who tried to make our trip as wonderful as it could be. This was my fifth time in Patmos, but my first stay at the Petra. It is definitely the best hotel on the island. Be sure to rent a moped so that you can easily get around the island.

Our stay at Petra Hotel was simply wonderful in every way. The owners greeted our taxi as we arrived and throughout our stay were gracious and helpful. They speak little English so communication is a little difficult, but we worked together to understand each other. The rooms are light, airy, clean, and tastefully decorated. Sunday breakfast is a treat--bacon, eggs, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, home-made rolls and breads, and orange juice--very delicious! We hope to return to Patmos, a lovely, quiet island with good beaches (we particularly enjoyed Cambos Beach). We will stay at the Hotel Petra when we return!

Christine and I truly enjoyed our stay at the Petra Hotel and the Island of Patmos. The Island revealed many wonderful sites and warm people who made us fell right at home .
The Inn Keepers at the Petra Hotel could not do enough to make us feel welcome , also the dinner was one to remember. This was our first trip to Greece and I would recommend to make the Island of Patmos A must see

If you know what stress is in your daily life, and you are going to Greece to have some relaxation built into your vacation, Patmos - and the Petra Hotel - is is the place to go!

We visited Athens (to quickly visit the Parthenon) and our second stop in Greece was Patmos. We wanted something off "the tourist trap circuit". What a hidden jewel! Patmos is known for having the impressive monastery of St. John (and the cave of the apocalypse where John wrote the book of revelations). But as nice as those places were to visit, the key to Patmos was that it was AUTHENTIC -- particularly Petra and Costas Stergiou, the owners of the Petra Hotel! They are so nice, caring, and accommodating that we truly felt like we were visiting friends and staying at their beautiful home. The view from our room was serene and spectacular. Back home, we live and work in what has to be one of the noisiest cities on earth -- and we have to tell you that the QUIET on Patmos is so different and calming that, in a sense, it seemed "healing". It is hard to describe, but it was not "boring", it was refreshing and good for the soul. Debbie, who works at the Petra hotel, was particularly helpful and sweet (and she worked very hard to make sure that all of the guests were happy).

There are several really good restaurants in the area (and we can enthusiastically recommend a restaurant near the
Monastery called Jimmy's Balcony). The homemade breakfast at the Petra is the best! When you stay at the Petra (which is MUCH better than staying at any place down near the harbor), they have a beach that you have to visit which is a short walk up the road. This is not the one that is about 60 yards from the hotel -- it is a few minutes walk further away. But it was wonderful, it had clear, calm water, wooden chaise lounges with umbrellas that you could rent for the day, and it was pretty much PRIVATE! By that I mean it was like a TV commercial where we were the only people on a beautiful beach for the entire day! It was relaxing and pretty.

In a two week period, we visited Athens, Patmos, Rhodes, and Santorini -- so we saw some impressive things on our vacation in Greece. Obviously, at those other places, there are more tourists, nightlife, etc. But in retrospect, our warmest and most genuine experiences in Greece were on Patmos -- and at the Petra Hotel.

Despite the weakness of the dollar versus the Euro right now, your money will go much further on Patmos (and at the Petra hotel) than on other, more "touristy" islands where the views may be spectacular -- yet you will unfortunately have to pay a tremendous price to see them.

My husband and I traveled to Europe for the first time in May 2006. We spent 3 days on Patmos at the Petra Hotel. We were looking for a very authentic Greek, low-key, yet pampered experience and we got just that on Patmos at the Petra. Upon arrival we were greeted at the gate by the Petra staff. The staff was extremely gracious. The Petra is a true Greek white washed structure with open air breezes, a gorgeous outdoor bar and patio overlooking the sea. It's located a short distance from the town of Skala by car or scooter. It is within walking distance to the beach and a couple of very good places to eat enjoyed by locals. The Petra was clean and decorated in modern Greek influence. Our suite had really romantic music piped into the room and through the entire facillity. The door to our private patio opened up to a view of the sea and boats. We enjoyed little details in the room like slippers and a plush bathrobe. The sunbathing deck was just outside our room with lovely teak lounge chairs and a giant size umbrella looking down on the most perfect blue water. The service was personal with attention to detail. The mornings are lovely, eating on the patio looking at the sea with a soft breeze blowing. The owners at the Petra arranged a boat trip to a fish tavern for lunch which was so much fun. The fish was fresh and tasty. We believe the Petra is the nicest hotel on Patmos. Their mission is to make sure you have everything you need. We will visit the Petra again.
