“Great for silent nights.”
Reviewed July 24, 2010

We are just back from the Muses Hotel and I can't agree more with Tomtravelling and totally disagree PaulbHam.
as extremely tired we wanted to sleep, go to beach and have good dinners....Koukounaries fulfilled all the criterias.
We paid £300 for 7 nights...£42.85 a night for 2 with Breakfast!!! That is nothing and considering the price we paid at the height of the season, the value was excellent.
Now the hotel. We had a fantastic welcome, the room yet basic was extremely clean and very spacious, towels changed 3 times and bed linen twice.
The breakfast was basic but with lovely greek yogurt, yet the coffee was good and real!
The staff including the 2 full time gardeners could not be more friendly. The young night barman is lovely.
We had dinner at the restaurant one evening. Food was more than adequate and this was our cheapest bill. We experienced the famous lady but decided to take the bright side of her attitude. And we saw her several times after and she could not be more friendly. As Tomtravelling mentioned the abruptness was more due to the way she was talking and her handling of the language than anything else.
would we go there again? Yes definitely yes. If you are tired , want a beach hoilday, have nice restaurants around, be away from the crowd (and it is a big crowd) , Koukounaries is for you and the Muse hotel is a grear place to sleep.

We loved this hotel and if we ever go back to Skiathos we will stay at the Muses. I have never written a review before, but having read some of the comments about The Muses felt that I must defend this lovely hotel. We found the rooms clean, towels and sheets changed every few days, staff friendly and accommodating. The lady on reception was always available and was very helpful. She worked very hard to find a car for us at very short notice. The breakfast was typically Greek and as this our eighth year on a Greek Island, found it to be a lot more than we have had in the past. Panias in the pool bar is lovely, as is Nick the daytime barman. The Breakfast staff were great and had a very good sense of humour, so maybe visitors should just try to talk to the staff - they may be surprised. Kind of agree about Scary Mary in the Restaurant, but after a few days you realise it's her lack of english that makes her seem abrupt - she works hard and is very helpful. There are enough good places to eat in Koukounaries for the Hera (Muses Taverna) not to be an issue.. By night and day we found that the pool bar at the Muses is the best by far for relaxation and good company. All the hotels in Koukounaries have their own individual style. So if you have already booked at the Muses don't be put off by reviews - you can look forward to a lovely relaxing holiday at a laid back hotel. I read the reviews before we left for our holiday and felt quite aprehensive, but as you can deduce we have had a brilliant holiday. Love Skiathos Town and the bus ride, which is not to be missed.

We completely LOVE Skiathos. A Fantastic Island with Beautiful surroundings and lovely people. This however was not what we experienced at the Muses Hotel. We were extremely disappointed with what we experienced there and did not feel we experienced what we paid for. We were gutted from the second we got out of the Taxi. The pictures in brochures and on tour operator websites are NOTHING like what you arrive to. A unwelcoming reception which felt more like a sales pitch than a welcome. The rooms were vile. Bare, old, damaged and dirty. We made absolutely sure we spent as little time as possible in the room, literally slept there and that was all we could stand. We had heard a lot of people staying there say about how good the restaurant was. Again not what we experienced at all..... The Daughter of the owner works very hard in the restaurant and hotel all day but her people skills leave much to be desired. Our first and last meal in the restaurant was a shambles, our order was forgotten and when we questioned how long it was taking we were offered some free Feta cheese, by the time we had eaten we didn't actually want the feta. When she collected our plates she told us off for not eating the Feta.... we nicknamed her Sporn of satan for the whole 2 weeks. The staff in the restaurant and hotel act like they are running the best place on the island and they really need a reality check. The hotel is dated and looks like it hasn't had any work done to it in about 15/20 years. This hotels saving grace however is PANOS who works in the pool bar. PANOS really saved our experience for us, he was welcoming, funny, attentive and extremely good at his job. The only one out of the entire staff that showed us any level of customer service and I get the impression that the hotel owners do not recognise his valuable contribution to the business.
THE BREAKFAST!!! - What a complete load of rubbish. There is no choice what so ever, and what there is , is all bulk bought rubbish. It really was Vile! I can't stress enough that you didn't even get a choice of a different cereal in 2 weeks!! It was actually laughable by the end of the holiday.
We paid way over the odds for this hotel and would much have preferred to stay next door at the Panorama or perhaps a week in Skiathos town and a week in Koukounaries. I would say this hotel is more like a 2 star and you should'nt pay any more than £300 for 2 weeks. Every other hotel looked more appealing to us than this place.
Enough moaning - We loved Skiathos and will definately be returning, but this hotel really did almost ruin it for us. Fortunately we met some lovely people who we spent a lot of time with AWAY from the hotel.

Stayed at The Muses Hotel, Koukounaries for a week in mid May 2010. Having read the reviews beforehand i noticed that there were a couple of negative reviews but most were largely positive (and, as most of the reviews for the Skiathos Palace were worse) we decided to plump for The Muses. This is what we found:
Positives:
Very friendly staff, Pool and area clean (although could get crowded in high season - and a bit deep for younger children), Evening dining there excellent, Great location, Breakfast plentiful (albeit a bit basic and boring), decent size room with balcony, cleanliness good
Negatives:
Our towels were only changed once during the week - not ideal as there were 3 of us and one towel had to be used to mop up the overspill on the bathroom floor as there is no shower curtain - and another towel had to act as a window blind (see later), The beds were not made, The twin beds cannot be pushed together (so no cuddling!!), The radio did not work, There was no curtain / blind on the bathroom window (meaning that the apartment opposite could have a great view of us on the toilet or having a shower). Now, I'm not ashamed of my body, in fact I'm quite happy with it, but I don't want people watching me while I answer the call of nature, so another towel had to be wedged behind the window to act as a blind. Also, we only had 2 rolls of toilet paper to last us the week (thankfully we just about managed to make that last).
However, these negatives did not detract from our enjoyment, and I would still recommend people to stay here. Would we stay there again? Yes. What you have to consider is that there are only a few hotels in Koukounaries, none of them major hotels. And none of them 5 Star. The Panorama next door looks OK but, as we only paid £170 for the 3 of us, then The Muses was a bargain.
Koukounaries itself is a very quiet, undeveloped resort . There are only a couple of supermarkets and a handful of tavernas/restaurants - and no nightclubs. So if you want loads of nightlife go to Magaluf or Faleraki. If it's a totally relaxing and chill-out holiday you want then this is the place. Our fav restaurants were Hera (part of The Muses) and Strofilia. Captain Michalis was also good (don't be put off by the fact that the restaurant looks like a dilapidated shed) - it's all home-grown produce there and the Captain himself is a friendly old guy.
Beaches: Our favourites were Koukounaries, Banana (up a track on the right just before the Koukounaries beach car-park). Watch out for the nudists here (although they seem to all bathe down the left-hand of the beach - behind the rocks). Brave indeed, especially as, in May, the water is freezing (there's no way I'd come out of the sea without any trunks on - guys, I think you know what I mean). They have just finished constructing a couple of trendy cafes on this beach, all very tasteful. Other nice, yet secluded, beaches are Mandraki and Agistros (grab a free map from the Airport baggage lounge to find them). Tip: if you find that the beach you're on is a bit windy, go to another on the opposite side of the island to the one you're on and it will be completely calm. The island is only 3 miles wide so it won't take you long.
We also read that you do not need to hire a car but I disagree. The Bus runs every 15 mins or so from Skiathos town to koukounaries beach (one end of the island to the other) but only takes in the (only) main road (and I can imagine that this is packed in summer). It would have cost us £88 for the airport transfers, and for £114 we could have a car for a week - no brainer! It gives you so much more freedom, no waiting for a start. The roads were very quiet in May and it allowed us to visit other beaches, and sites (ie Kastro) which we would not have found otherwise (or would have taken up more time walking to). We only hired a small basic Hyundia Atos, which was fine, but note that most of the other roads are either dirt tracks or roughly tarmacked lanes (some a bit steep and hair-raising) so a Jeep is probably better. However, if you don't fancy having a car all week there are hundreds of car (and scooter) hire companies everywhere (inc koukounaries). Just take your driving license.
Skiathos Town is worth a visit (both day and night) with a lovely port, some decent souvenir shops and tavernas / restaurants - our favourite restaurant here was Asprolithos (turn off Papadiamanti Street, that's the main 'High' street, at the top end behind the school) - great food, lovely staff.
Must-do: You have got to take a ride to the Airport to see the Air planes coming in (literally just a few feet over your head) and even better taking off (wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the flying debris from the blast). This is a MUST. Check it out on YouTube.
All in all The Muses Hotel, Koukounaries, and Skiathos in general gets a big thumbs up from the Graham family.

Hotel Muses is situated in the quieter area of the island in Koukounaries. Almost the nearest hotel to the beautiful Banana (and Little Banana) Beaches.

The layout of the hotel is basically groups of 5 rooms clustered into 2 storey blocks. There is an adequate hotel bar and similar restaurant. Food at the hotel is good and the menu has a variety of Greek and Med food together with the usual snacks, pizza etc. Breakfast was poor though and consisted of Greek yogurt, honey and tinned peaches. An "English" option was baked beans, tinned hot dog sausages and hard boiled eggs. There was also bread and jam and ham and cheese. Hardly inspiring but typical of Greece.

We know Greek accomodation is hardly ever anything but functional and Muses is no exception. The room is an average size but the bathroom is extremely small. You have to sit down on the loo at an angle because your knees are banging on the wash basin. The main room is reasonable size and has dated, cheap furniture. The radio didn't work and several lights needed bulbs replacing. There was a small balcony that overlooked another block. However, rooms on the first floor tended to have larger balconys. Request one of these if you want to stretch your legs. We booked the hotel as it was the cheapest option for us. If you are on a limited budget then Muses is ok. However, if you can spare an extra few hundred quid for your holiday, next door is the Hotel Panorama that is absolutely lovely and beats the Muses in every area hands down.

We were saddened by the poor basic standards and upkeep of the room. The matteresses were stained with urine which didn't have matteress protector's. The bathroom tiles were cracked and the grouting filthy, the room smelt of dampness and felt unclean. Very depressing and so were the staff who were in my opinion not profesional at all!. It was a gross misrepresentation of the website photo's and descrption over all. Generally negelect.

Me and my boyfriend went there for 2 weeks but on the second week our friends came out about 8 of them, we only went to Skiathos as my friend was getting married. Didnt think much of the rooms atall the hardest bed i have ever slept on could fell the springs!! When we got there we had to pay extra for air con at £36 a week £3 a day for the fridge and £10 a week for your safe!!! which you dont get told when booking the hotel!! Our rooms were damp and we had a wet room (bathroom) where it was not cleaned properly and could see all the mould round the edges of the floor and the bottom of the toliet disgusting!! Did not get fresh towels and sheets everyday!! Also if your below the age of 40 then dont go there it's full of old people that HATE NOISE!!! It's such a quite area with nothing to do there they threated to chuck us out if we made to much noise after 12 coming home from the bars, if they didnt want young people staying there then why let them book there!! One night we had come back from a bar just talking as you do but as our apatement was right at the top we had to walk though the gardens & thought other apartments and they told us we were to loud, its not like we were destroying the place and given them abuse!!! I would only recommend old people there!! Some of the staff were nice the lady on the reception was not helpfull atall! Lovely restaurant though, would never go back there to us it wasn't a 3 star more like a 2 star
