We have stayed on many Greek islands over the last 30 years, but there is always something special about Skiathos. As we had booked this during the summer holidays on a budget, we didn't anticipate anything other than a basic studio to sleep. We would never consider cooking when there are so many nice restaurants within a stone's throw.

We booked on Olympic being far cheaper than Thomas Cook. Met at the airport, cases taken off us to travel seperately. The Olympic coach rep wasn't particularly helpful pointing in the direction of the accommodation, however we followed some repeat visitors so found Amalia very easily.

We were greeted by Otis and George with a very welcome complimentary shot and a beer.
Otis showed us the apartment whilst we waited for the baggage some half hour later.

We stayed in 9b (I think) which was a room with twin beds and a split level with a further 2 single beds. As there were only 2 of us these were never used. The bathroom was clean and even had an enclosed shower so no soaking floors, which is so rare in Greek budget accommodation. If you don't want to be exfoliated with the handtowels, as has been mentioned before, bring a soft bath towel from home. The kitchen area is again clean, comprising of kettle, 2 ring hob, plenty of utensils, pots and cutlery. There was a toaster, juicer and some kind of food processor, not sure that all the other apartments had these so perhaps shouldn't have broadcast that!

There is a bumpy walk off the main road, so torches are recommended, high heels are not!

Several lovely beaches within walking distance, some take a little stamina over the tops of the hills as they are steep, dusty, and it is very hot. Try them all.

We ate at Stifilia, The Big Bad Wolf, the 'Runway' locally, although George, Otis and Dimitrius can offer plenty of tips for great restaurants.

We went into Skiathos town twice, once eating at The Windmill. This was a beautiful hilltop setting overlooking the harbour. We booked 2 weeks prior to visiting for the balcony table to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I was a little disappointed to arrive there to be greeted with 'we thought you were coming tomorrow'. I had my printed e-mail confirming our date, however she insisted a couple had booked prior to us with a 30 Euros deposit (suspicious!). We hadn't been asked to pay a deposit on confirmation of booking. However she sat us at a nice table with a lovely view, and we were offered champagne by way of compensation.
The meal was lovely, both having fillet steaks which were perfectly cooked and presented.

We also went to the Final Step, also on the hill. The lady who is here worked at the WIndmill for 17 years. This is slightly cheaper, but the service and the view are just as good, and the food is gorgeous and just as beautifully presented. I would strongly recommend it.

The night life, how can you better a night at Agustera with Dino and Effi? This couple run one of the best bars on the island and it was just around the corner from where we were staying. Perfect.

The end of the evening was always back to Amalia sitting around Georges bar, with many of the other guests who we befriended on our vacation. So many are repeat visitors, and I can honestly understand why. George and Otis are wonderful hosts, offering occasional complementary shots, the cheapest beer and wine on the island, and the warmest hospitality.
They work so hard keeping this place nice.

We want to go back next year, and would not think of booking anywhere else in Skiathos.

On a budget? Want a place to shower and rest your head? Just off the main road, down a dirt track, you ll find Amalia. As they say, you get what you pay for. Staff friendly, near the best beach on the island. Buses run regular to Skiathos town and all villages and beaches in between. Pool could have been a bit cleaner but spent most of time on great beach. 1 week plenty if youve been to Skiathos before.
The apartments are spacious but very basic so dont plan to do any major cooking and if you prefer to dry yourself with a bath/sheet towel....... Take your own as they only supply you with hand towels. Booked through Olympic, flew with Small Planet on the way out bit of a mish mash. Lithuanian by all accounts. Flew from LGW 5hours early, got phone call midday day before three h
ours delay on way home but flew with god knows who. ?.....Estonian i think.
Holiday was a weeks break and it was what it was...cheap! Some good restaurants and bars, try Big Bad Wolf and Augustera. 2good supermarkets and ATM!

Room Tip: Opt for the back as the ones at the front can be noisy due to the bar just in front

We stayed at the Amalia from the 12th to the 19th of July 2013. While it is true that the accommodation itself is very basic (as it often is in Greece), the friendliness, hospitality and warmth of George and Otis was second to none.

As you may have read in other reviews, they really couldn't do enough for you. If you needed help on where to go or how to get somewhere, they were quite happy to draw a map and then also make recommendations of tavernas and beaches etc.

The pool area was very nice and very well kept, and there was no need to fight for a sun bed! The reception was the bar (our kind of place!) and you will not find the local beer, Mythos, cheaper anywhere else on the island at only €2 (or in Greece most likely!).

At night the bar is a friendly and fun place to be, everyone has a great time and the music can go on into the early hours but we found with the shutters closed there wasn't much noise (and we were facing the bar and pool area).

Would recommend to other couples, families or groups of friends.

Thanks again George and Otis,

Dan + Sam

My wife and I travelled out for a weeks stay on the 12th July. We were pleasantly surprised with the whole experience especially considering how much we paid. Amalia's accommodation is basic but perfectly adequate for the price (in Greece all one needs is a clean, quiet and comfortable place to sleep as you spend so much time on the beach). However, it was the special hospitality of the owners Otis and George which made our experience particularly great. They couldn't do enough for us and we found them to be warm, kind and very flexible with all our requests which made our stay extremely comfortable. They really seemed to care about the welfare and comfort of their guests . I burnt the back of my leg badly on a motorbike exhaust and upon me asking Otis for any cream he ran to the first aid box and provided me with a burn spray and antiseptic cream which ultimately stopped it from getting infected (not to mention saving me a trip to a private medic). He asked me every day how the burn was and whether I needed more medicine. I'm not sure how many other places would give this service?

We would have no hesitation in recommending Amalia... yes you get what you pay for in terms of the accommodation being basic but there's a bonus in the form of warmth and hospitality.

Room Tip: Our only tip would be to try and get one of the quieter garden bungalows where all you can hear is t...

As some of your other reviewers have stated this place needs smartening up. However it is clean and in a nice location away from the main road. My main complaint is the noise coming from the bar at night sometimes until 3.00 am. If you are prepared to spend 80 euros for air con ( excessive ) then you can close the windows, if not then be prepared for noisy nights even though George does turn the music down later on. One of the guests said he puts ear plugs in at night and opened the window, not my idea. Why oh why can't the shower head be attached to the wall. You have to hold the shower resulting in water going everywhere. All in all you get what you pay for and Skiathos is just lovely, Koukannaries beach just great.

Room Tip: Try and find a quiet room if they exist

room re painted, bathroom very usable, new shower cubicle,a very nice stay, nice re tiled pool area but a little frayed around the bar area, just proves this is a classic olympic holiday, would stay again, shame there are no light meals/snacks e.t.c but we prefer to go out during the day and obviouslywhat this accomodation is based on.we had a serious electrical problem on arrival but was sorted within less than one hour,a first in our opinion. Our main concern is with olympic holidays as we were delayed for more than 9 hours on departure due to charter flight problems resulting in many guests filling complaint forms at the air port,Not fair on Amalia, they try real hard to look after us, maybe George will ditch Olympic and rely on his reputation to keep this resort alive. To sum up, we would return under our own steam without doubt.

Room Tip: we were in b4,fine for us.

My wife and I have just returned from a week at Amalia Apartments. We walked into our local travel agents and basically said ' we want a cheap weeks worth of sun, we don't mind where'
With this in mind, I would restate other peoples views that you get what you pay for. The apartments are a bit tired, the odd door drags on the floor, ovens are not the latest item, and beds could do with newer/softer mattresses. However, they rooms and site are clean, well kept and bright.
The location in our opinion is spot on, five minutes maximum walk along a track from the main road, so no noise apart from what you make/is made on site. Surrounded by trees, and only a further 5 minutes from the beach once on the main road.
George,Otis and the rest are most welcoming hosts, staff are friendly and more than willing to dole out more toilet rolls should one not be enough! Showers are modern, with proper glass enclosures, water was hot and of good pressure. Air-Con is a payable extra, which at the time of writing was 80 euros a week !This we thought was a lot BUT it may be the going rate on the island. Pool bar was clean, the music was in our opinion a bit intrusive, especially after midnight. With all the doors closed, you could not hear it, but then the rooms were too hot without the air-con.
We would agree with others on here that if you intend to use the rooms as somewhere to sleep, and use the many restaurants on the main road to eat and drink, these rooms are fine, and good value.
The Myrtia aprtments next door are more modern but more expensive. We had both dinner and lunch there and were made most welcome by the staff. This has been taken over in the past two years so you can disregard any older comments about avoiding Myrtia hotel.
So if you do not expect Savoy standards fro Blackpool B&B prices, we would recommend Amalia Apartments.
However we booked through Olympic Air, and had a dodgy transfer. On arrival our bus was not ready, but the truck which takes your luggage separately was. Our luggage went on ahead, and then for soem reason my wife and I missed the bus [ no one else did ] So it could be our fault but my gripe with the rep. was that no name check or head count had been carried out, and it was assumed that everyone was aboard. My wife and I caught a taxi from the airpot to the apartments [ 24 euros] and overtook the bus on the way.
Flying home is another problem. Because your luggage is carried separately, it arrives at the airport and is left in the open at one of the cafes. One couple had there luggage stolen, and it also leaves you open to theft from or tampering with your bags. Now I know, we would not book a transfer, and use a taxi where you have control over your luggage.
