Lefkas is one of the lesser known Ionian islands and the village of Vassiliki on its southern coast one of the nicest in the entire Ionian Sea area. Not quite discovered, (except by windsurfers), it still has many of the charms that one hopes to see when visiting the Greek islands - a small harbour surrounded by affordable and friendly tavernas and bars with good food, a decent beach, but close to some truly awesome beaches and a great base to explore the island without worrying about getting run off the road by tour buses and trucks.
The Hotel Odeon is on the beach about 800 metres from the centre of town, although there are stores, tavernas and other amenities much closer. It has only 17 rooms, which are new, extremely clean with nice beds and bathrooms. All have balconies or patios, but you must ask for a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor facing the sea. There are only 6 or 7 of these, but they are worth waiting for.
This a family run operation and they can't do enough for you. The breakfasts are amazing - no standard Greek cold buffet. The food is prepared just for you and never seems to stop coming.
The price was 60 Euros a night w/ breakfast and was the best deal we had on our recent trip to Greece.
Sadly, the popularity of Vassiliki with windsurfers (claimed to be the best site in Europe and it did look great) means the town is starting to develop quickly, so get there while you can. On the positive side, the windsurfers are a very laid back crowd and make for relaxing companions.
