Okay my review is long overdue but the world has got to know how wonderful Marfel's Lodge is. Ate Fe is the contact person for Marfel's lodge and with the fone conversation we had, she already strike me as a welcoming, hospitable, and caring person. Of course she's everything that in person plus more. The rate is very affordable at P350/person/night. It's actually a 2-bedroom house converted to an inn so you understand the limits to capacity during peak season. Better call months before so you'll score a bed.

The house is kept clean but don't expect that the room will be tidied for you everyday. Towels were provided and if you need toiletries, I'm sure you can get it in the small honesty store downstairs. It's not a hotel but you can always politely seek assistance from ate Fe. Only draw was that there's only one bathroom in the whole house, so plan your rituals well and share.

When I went to Batanes, I didn't actually plan anything. I was traveling alone and was thinking I need to be as flexible as possible to cater to the costs. Good thing ate Fe is actually very close to Ryan Cardona (a local tour guide) so my tours were more or less standing already. Of course ate Fe will not insist (because I asked her myself) this if guests will have other plans. But for sure you will want Ryan Cardona too as a guide, he's very informative.

Stayed here with friends in November 2013. Fe, who runs the lodge, was always helpful and made us feel really welcome when we arrived. She stayed at a house nearby and always checked on us and made sure we were okay.

We stayed in Room 1, which was just good for 3 (or 4 max)people. Towels and soap were provided to each guest. Guests have an option to use the room fan, or the a/c (which cost just slightly higher). Room 2 is just next door. Free Wi-fi in the room.

There are two bathrooms on the ground floor- both pretty clean with hot shower. What we liked about the place was that you can use the kitchen to cook. (You save a lot on meals this way!) There's a cozy dining area and living area as well which guests are free to use. There's also a mini 'Honesty store' where you can just 'buy' snacks and drinks from the counter and fridge next to the kitchen. You just need to list what you 'bought' on the notepad and place your payment in the box provided.

For me, the location of lodge is excellent. A 3-5 minute walk from Basco airport, which is next to Ivatan Pension Lodge and Restaurant where you get the best of native Ivatan food. At 3pm every day, the airport runway is open to the public - we were able to ride our bicycles (which you can rent from Fe for P20/hour) on the airport runway! The lodge is also a short bicycle ride from the shops and the market (if you want to buy food to cook at the lodge).

Reservations can be made directly through phone or SMS (or through their official Facebook page). Payment is cash only, upon check-out.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here!

Room Tip: There are just two rooms at Marfel's (roughly same size). If you're a big group, you could reserve both rooms and essentially have the whole house to yourselves!

Marfel Lodge is one of many homestays in Basco, Batanes. While it only offers two rooms, its owner, Fe Fitero, is very helpful in terms of making frequent coordination regarding room reservation, food suggestion, transport service and even flight updates.

Marfel Lodge also has its own kitchen and a mini "honesty" store - very convenient considering that Batanes only has a few restaurants.

Make sure you make your reservations early be because this homestay - which is just a five-minute walk from the airport and has wifi internet - is slowly becoming one of the recommended homestays in Batanes.
