Corfu Holiday Palace
Ranked #1 of 5 Hotels in Kanoni
Reviewed June 16, 2013

After reading previous reviews we were very apprehensive about our forthcoming holiday. We had two rooms which were on the fifth floor looking out towards the airport and runway which we found fascinating. The rooms although clean seemed a little tired and could do with updating as could other areas of the hotel. The sheets were changed every day as were any used towels. The drains were not brilliant especially in our daughter's room as water would sometimes come up through a grating in the floor after they had showered or had a bath. There were occasional drain smells in other areas of the hotel but not overpowering.
The restaurant was busy and would definitely benefit with a few more staff. As a party of five we found it easier to sit either end of the main eating area, being here we were forgotten and often received our drinks half way through the meal. We also found it better not to go down to dinner too early as it was then slightly less noisy. There were many choices both hot and cold although due to the inconsideration of other selfish guests the hot food containers were often left open leaving the contents cold. Don't be put off by other reviewers saying the food was repetitive, surely you cannot expect a complete change of menu every day when the hotel is trying to cater for so many people. There is enough variety for people to try something different most days. On the plus side all staff were helpful and friendly. The buses into Corfu Town ran every 20 minutes during the week and only cost 1.10 Euros if you bought your tickets from the excellent mini market opposite the hotel.
We did enjoy visiting Corfu Island, the Greek people are unfailingly friendly, and although we would not stay at the Holiday Palace again that is simply because we do not usually return to the same places. Although it is not 5 star by our standards, having seen a lot of other hotels on the island we think ours was one of the best.

Room Tip: Higher floors (5th to 7th) are best. Lake View includes a view of the airport and runway which is no...

Stayed at Corfu Holiday Palace in June 2013. Due to evening flight and delay in transfer, we arrived at the hotel at 10pm and after taking our luggage to the room then went to the restaurant to see if we could still have a meal even though dinner time officially ended at 9.30. The restaurant staff kindly let us eat from the buffet and served us a drink. A good first impression of the hotel.

Speaking of the food, there was a decent choice but the food was more often warm rather than hot. Partly due no doubt due to some guests not closing the lids of the metal trays where the food was contained after use. Best to go early for dinner. Staff in restaurant were very polite but didn't smile enough. Also for drinks service, two evenings of our week stay I had to ask twice to order a drink. Could be quicker in clearing table sometimes too. Not great service but not bad either.

We thought the room was a nice size with a great view and the balcony was good. The shower did not work the night we arrived but was fixed next morning so all okay. The few disappointments about the room were the lack of tea/coffee making facilities and no bottled water which are often standard in other hotels we have stayed. The hotel entrance does display the hotel as 5 star after all.

The outdoor swimming pool was a good size although a lot of guests put their towels out early there were still some loungers available at the time we stayed. There were always loungers with towels on where the occupants disappear for hours on end and we even noticed people having towels/clothes on different loungers at the same time!, probably to cover for the moving sun Greedy that. Also some loungers were broken but still left out which you would not expect of a 5 star hotel.

The hotel is in a good location, quite quiet but has some bars and little market shops near by. The airport is very close so it is good to watch some of the flights coming in and out. Corfu town is only 4km away with a modest price bus fare. The town is well worth a visit but wear comfy shoes, especially if visiting the old and new forts as ground uneven in a lot of places and also steps to higher points.

If you are looking for a beach holiday this is probably not the place for you as the beach which appears man made is small, not too sandy and not very good in our opinion. Water looked good though. The main way to get to the beach is by the use of the lift at the back of the pool but this was out of use the last day or two we were there. Better by the pool.

Pluses

Free safety deposit box in reception also safe in the room.
Wi-Fi business centre with computer (no extra charge)
Good Air-Con in good position in room (no extra charge)
Big pool

Minuses

Lifts! One worked all the time, one worked some of the time, one not at all.
Snooker table - Was told, not in use. What a shame and waste of space.
Evening Entertainment was poor.

The Kefi bar is very nice but apart from the first night we arrived it was quiet. The subsequent nights, at least when we were about the hotel. The entertainment each night seemed to be a singer/musician playing a keyboard. The singing was pretty dire from both the entertainers in my humble opinion. This bar could be so much better if the entertainment was improved as a nice relaxing area.

Tours:

We booked two tours with Lord Travel. The first of these was to Praga and Paxos, two other islands. Praga is the smaller of the two and has a lot of gift shops, restaurants, beach & harbour. We then went to Paxos where we found if we wanted to do a bus tour of the island, we had to pay an additional 8 euros each which we were not advised of when we booked. We did not go on the island tour but stayed at the harbour, there were a couple of small stony beaches at the island which were not great. There was not much else to do or see apart from various restaurants & a few shops. We do not feel this tour was value for money, especially with the hidden charges incurred.

The second tour we did was to Albania and much better. It is best to go on the full tour to the roman ruins and the Blue Eye Springs, as there is not much to do in the port's town of Saranda and you don't need more than a couple of hours maximum to explore it. If you don't do the tour, you will have 8 hours to explore! We were aware at time of booking this tour, there were additional prices to go on the tour to the roman ruins so no hidden costs. A buffet lunch was also provided at a local restaurant.

Overall:

We rate the hotel good-very good but the 5 star rating on the board outside is out of date. Would say this is a good hotel to stay in although it is unlikely we would return simply due to wanting to visit other places.

Room Tip: Stay in upper levels to see sea, aircraft coming into land

We stayed at the Corfu Holiday Palace on the peninsula in Corfu for 8 nights at the beginning of June 2013. We had a sea facing room on the 7th floor.

We went there with some trepidation after reading some of the reviews on here but can honestly say that we didn't have anything to complain about. The hotel was clean, the views from the balcony were fantastic.

We only had breakfast at the hotel. No complaints. A great selection and very helpful staff. Fried eggs, omelettes and pancakes cooked right up till 10.00 a.m.

The lifts, only 2 of them were working but it wasn't a problem in our view. We walked down to breakfast most mornings as that seemed to be the busiest time. The far right of the lifts sometimes gets stuck on the 7th floor, you just have to prize the doors open to use it. Going up it rarely stopped at 7 and we found it hilarious that you'd just go back down to 5 and up again to 6 when you pressed 7. However, it wasn't something that marred our holiday.

Everything we requested from the hotel was provided, even an iron and an ironing board. It is best to order this on the morning that you need it. I dialled housekeeping at 9 and the board and iron were there before 9.30, I ironed whilst it rained for half an hour and it was collected 15 minutes later. Cannot fault service like that.

The rooms were cleaned on a daily basis. Towels changed if you left them in the bath. The ones that didn't need to be changed we left on the balcony and they were folded when we returned.

We went bowling on another rainy morning. The barman can offer tips if you're interested.

The pool is busy, as you'd expect. However going down there about 10.30 we managed to find 3 sunbeds and spent an hour by the saltwater pool. The indoor pool was freezing. You get a free loan of beach towels though which is great.

The lift to the beach is great, turn right and walk along the causeway across to the other town but there's not much there and the main road to the left is quite a walk with no pavements and fast flowing traffic. However on that road you'll eventually come across Benitses which is well worth a visit.

Buses into the town are very frequent and stop just outside the hotel. There is a brilliant mini market just across the road that sells wine, bread, biscuits, chocolate, ice cream, souvenirs, toiletries, anything you'd need really. The bus tickets from there were cheaper than on the bus as stated in other reviews.

We walked into town quite a lot, turn right out of the hotel and follow the road round. At the next junction you can either turn right and walk along the promenade or keep going to pass Mon Repos. It takes between 30 and 40 minutes.

If you want to experience real Greek Tavernas then go towards the port (beyond the new fort) and head up into the streets away from the town parallel with the port. For us that was the best part of the holiday and food and drink was a lot cheaper.

All in all the holiday was great and I would definitely go back to the Corfu Holiday Palace.

Room Tip: Sea view room was great though in the evening the balconies don't get the sun whereas the ones f...

Got a very cheap 7 night package deal to Greece staying at the Corfu Holiday Palace, formally the 5 star Corfu Hilton International.
We were on the top floor with a back "Lake/Airport runway" view...
Hotel is charming, but has seen better days as I can only imagine how fabulous it must have been to stay there 30+ years ago.
They however must have forgotten to remove the 5 stars from the street sign as I would give it, at most, THREE.
Sadly only one of the three guest elevators worked properly causing huge delays when trying to get to and from ones room.
During our stay, we witnessed the completion of a new "private" pool allocated exclusively to the 10 ground floor suites. I would just like to point out to the owners of this establishment that making 20 guests happy when the other 300+ are miserable with the broken lifts makes no sense to me.
Breakfast was not very high spec, but good enough to walk away feeling nourished for the day.
Breakfast staff seemed as if they were doing you a big favor by going about their business.
Our room had an issue with the bathroom light, not to mention a foul stench coming from the drain plugs, which we reported to the very friendly reception staff upon arrival. Their maintenance personnel finally got the fluorescent light working properly after our 4’Th day there.
Can’t say we were impressed by this!
The rooms itself was good and seeing as we are airplane enthusiasts, were not really bothered by the loud airport runway.
The pool area was very good as well as the beach which is accessed by a funicular.
Parking was free on the hotel grounds.
Our next holiday to Corfu may see us trying a different hotel.

Room Tip: Try to get an ungrade to the SEA facing rooms.

Nice hotel but nowhere near the 5* rating advertised. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Reception, bar and pool staff are very good - restaurant staff are miserable at breakfast time and take ages to clear the tables. Food ok with a good choice. Lifts can be a nightmare in terms of reliability and its often better to take the stairs even if you are on the 7th floor! Not much to do in Kanoni in the evening but Corfu Town is only 20 mins away by bus (€1.5 each way or €1.1 if bought in the shop opposite) or taxi (€10 each way). Superb choice of restaurants and bars in Corfu Town at reasonable prices. Would recommend you hire a car and visit the West coast - Glyfada beach is fantastic and Paleo is a brilliant collection of beaches and coves some of which can only be accessed by boat. All in all a great holiday as long as you don't pay 5* price for the hotel which overall is probably 3.5*.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the sea and 5th floor upwards are best. Lake view rooms face the airport runway but pl...

Just back from a relaxing break in Corfu Holiday Palace
We had a great time and got exactly the holiday we expected for the price

Staff were all friendly and helpful throughout the stay
Food was buffet style as expected - always plenty choice and topped up frequently
We never waited more than a few minutes for a table at either breakfast or dinner

As we were aware the hotel is very near the airport but like most people we talked to this created a diversion through the day - not any annoyance - there were no flights through the night

As others have said the decor is a bit faded 70s / 80s glory - a bit like ourselves
Again we thought this added to charm rather than detracting from it
It was obviously a classy Hilton in its day and apparently had a few celebrity visitors in its time
Every thing was clean and functional throughout

We had a sea view room which had spectacular outlook over the Ionian Sea - I would never get tired of that view to wake up to

Location was good for us
Great views out towards Mouse Island
Short walk to Perama across the causeway
Longer walk to Corfu town (just over an hour including refreshment stop) but plenty of buses if you don't want to walk
Not a lot to do outside near the hotel - only a couple of cafes / bars in the area but we liked the hotel cocktail bar and stayed there most nights

Overall thoroughly recommended

Room Tip: Get a sea view - it is worth it
