We visited Stegna Kozas on a previous holiday to Rhodes in 2005 when we stayed in Stegna, which is the beach resort of Archangelos village, this trip we stayed at Lindos as we were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary , and 7 of our friends joined us for the holiday and the celebratory meal here at Stegna Kozas on our anniversary.
We prebooked the evening meal via their excellent website (note: Stegna Kozas is also on Facebook) and I had a few emails back and forth with Dimitris Kozas, the owner, to discuss the finer points of the table setting and numbers .
Nothing was too much trouble to organise – I was offered flowers and champagne and cake to have with the meal and all was as arranged.
The restaurant is set at the end of the beach , literally on the beach, and has been here since 1932 and in the Kozas family ever since it was opened .
It is a large airy restaurant, with part of itopne to the sea - so you can eat with the sound of the waves lapping, with an open kitchen along the whole of one wall, decorated in traditional Greek rustic design with family photographs and displays of the food accompaniments and local produce.
There are over 20 different varieties of ouzo on display and the table settings are simple with blue and white tablecloths
The menu is simply fish: fresh catch of the day, depending on what is brought by the local fishermen which has been caught by spear or long line fishing . Diners are invited to see what is available in the kitchen and the fishes are weighed and then prepared and grilled.
This of course takes time , time to drink and chat and enjoy the company of friends, and when it is cooked the fish is then filleted and served with a surgeons precision.
Dimitris expertise is helpful in advising how many people each fish meal will feed
They serve bruschetta with olive spread, and a selection of tasty innovative salads and accompanying vegetables and potatoes.
We ate Rouzetia a local fish, served with a strong garlic sauce, which is sucked off its bones and is very rich tasting; and four of our friends had the simply grilled Sea Perch served with lemon and olive oil dressing that fed them amply. No other seasonings are needed.
Also available are seafood paella and seafood pasta dishes .
We had a sticky honey cake to follow with vanilla ice cream, and to follow our meal some local Mastika liquor ; this is a liquor seasoned with mastic resin from an evergreen tree.
We were all truly well stuffed and satisfied.
Before I finish I must also mention the toilets! The toilets are the latest innovation in hygiene, each time the toilet is used a fresh film wrap covers the toilet seat and is activated by a button so every customer can be assured of the cleanliness of the toilets.
Everyone of us enjoyed a truly splendid meal, good company and a fabulous fishy feast .
